A Mixed Methods Study of An Alternative Educational Program For At-Risk Students In South Carolina
Get PDFThis research study focused on the theories that support and underpin the Nine Characteristics of High-Performing Schools. Much of the data presented about high-performing schools lack data about schools that are nontraditional; the nontraditional school, otherwise known as an alternative school or alternative learning placement, supports students who fail to thrive in the traditional school setting. The study employed a sequential explanatory mixed methods design. This design utilized an initial quantitative phase of data collection and analysis, followed by a qualitative phase of data collection and analysis. The purpose of the qualitative phase was to gain further insight regarding the data collected during the quantitative phase and focused on comprehending outliers that were not fully congruent with the collected data. The Nine Characteristics of High-Performing Schools, the Self-Determination Theory, and Kohlberg’s Theory of Motivation were the foundation of the conceptual framework. The findings of this study indicated that all nine characteristics were present, although Characteristic 7, Focused Professional Development; Characteristic 8, A Supportive Learning Environment; and Characteristic 9, High Levels of Family and Community Involvement were not as strongly supported by participant responses. Further, findings indicated that professional learning and parent involvement were not as strongly represented and therefore may have an impact on SEL at this school. Additionally, the findings of the research determined that the success of the alternative school depends on v the quality of the school leadership, the support and training of the teachers, and the dedication to the goals and vision crafted by the school stakeholders
Medication Reconciliation: Preventing Harm to the Senior Living Population
Get PDFThis project was designed to address the risk of medication errors occurring when geriatric adults return to a senior living setting following an acute care stay. In addition to a primary care physician (PCP), the health care of geriatric adults is often managed by medical specialists and subspecialists. The engagement of multiple providers poses significant communication challenges, as these providers often work in separate offices and are limited in their information sharing. Consequently, following a hospital discharge, reconciling medication orders amongst all providers can be challenging. This challenge is further complicated, as PCPs oftentimes do not interface with the specialists and subspecialists, making medication reconciliation difficult. Recognizing the significant risk posed by medication errors resulting from insufficient medication reconciliation practices, the World Health Organization (WHO) introduced the Medication Without Harm initiative. This project is designed to enhance the self-perceived confidence and competence of nurses in senior living settings when they are challenged with reconciling medications for geriatric adults experiencing health care transitions. To accomplish this, a framework of education supported by tools specifically designed to facilitate the medication reconciliation process, recognize medication discrepancies, and communicate with PCPs, medical specialists and subspecialists is presented to nurses that reconcile medications in senior living settings. Following the presentation, input is solicited to evaluate the impact on the respective nurses’ new perception of their confidence and competence in the process
