Combating the Opioid Crisis: Opioid and Naloxone Training in a Rural School District

    Get PDF
Background: The opioid epidemic is plaguing North Carolina and has crept its way into the academic setting of many elementary, middle, and high schools in the state, causing school nurses to scramble and search for ways to keep students safe. This DNP project was designed to educate school nurses in a rural county in eastern North Carolina about opioid education and naloxone administration. This project intended to increase the knowledge and confidence level of school nurses in case of an opioid overdose emergency within the school. As more and more children and adolescents experiment with opioids, there is an urgent need for schools to have an active plan in place, naloxone readily available in the school building, and have trained and confident school nurses who can administer naloxone. Method: Eleven school nurses participated in a 1-day education training session and simulation. Each school nurse completed a six-question pre-intervention and post-intervention survey to determine if the training was efficient and if the nurses’ knowledge, readiness, and confidence level had increased. Results: Data collected from the pre-intervention and post-intervention surveys revealed an increased knowledge and confidence level regarding general opioid education and how to intervene effectively, administering naloxone during a suspected or potential overdose

SARS-CoV-2 Infectivity, and Interaction with ACE2 in the Human Oral Cavity: A Comprehensive Study

    Get PDF
The oral cavity has the ability to transport infections throughout the body and be infected by bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and viruses, including severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which is the virus that led to the most recent pandemic. SARS-CoV-2 has unique ways of interacting with the human body to infect individuals, which has led researchers and scientists to have limited knowledge on its long-term impact on human health. However, there are ways to identify various oral cavity infections and prevent infection now and in the future. Many studies have been conducted in an attempt to understand the body’s response to SARS-CoV-2 since it is a unique virus with little previous knowledge on how it impacted human health. Many viral, anatomical, and physiological aspects must be understood to determine the means in which SARS-CoV-2 infects humans, how the human body reacts, and the impact the virus has during and after infection. The oral cavity acts as one of the major gateways SARS-CoV-2 uses to enter and infect the human body, so it is crucial to develop an understanding of the virus’ means of transmission and interaction with the human body so proactive and reactive means of treatment can be developed

External Support Structures in Fused Deposition Modeling 3D Printing

    Get PDF
3D Printing, sometimes also referred to as Additive Manufacturing, is a technology that has garnered a lot of attention in the past several years. While the technology has attracted a significant community of hobbyists, the benefits of the technology have also been recognized in manufacturing. While there are many different types of 3D Printing techniques, the most common type is Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), mainly due to its relatively low cost compared to other types. However, the technique also present a significant limitation: it tends to struggle with models that have overhanging parts. When a layer is extruded by an FDM printer, it will only stay in place if there is something for it to rest on from below. Overwise, it will fall onto the print bed due to gravity. In a lot of cases, the most feasible way to solve the problem of overhangs is through printing external support structures. The process of designing and adding support structures to 3D models can be very time consuming, so many developers have attempted to write programs that generate these structures automatically. The process of generating external support structures presents several challenges, attempting to create supports that are stable, but also use the least material and take the least time to print. The purpose of this paper is to present the challenges that come with designing these programs, and the methods used in the programs to overcome those challenges

Improving Parental Communication With Adolescents About Sex

    Get PDF
In 2018, 68 million people in the United States were infected with a sexually transmitted infection. Of those 68 million, 26 million cases were newly diagnosed, and of that 26 million, half were youth aged 15-24 (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2022a). The approaches to educating our youth about sexual health are inconsistent, leading to misconceptions about the dangers associated with risky sexual behavior. However, parents have the upper hand in discussing sexual health information with their children by being the child’s first contact and source of information. Teens who report talking with their parents about sex are more likely to delay having sex and to use condoms when they do have sex (CDC, 2019). This project provided an evidence-based educational video to parents on the importance of parental communication with adolescents about sex and provided specific communication methods, techniques, and strategies parents can use to open the lines of communication with their children. The results of this project were positive. Each objective measured increased from baseline. Parental comfort had the greatest increase by 28%. Knowledge of the importance of sexual communication increased by 4%. Parental willingness improved by 11%. The results of this project indicate the need for continued projects to educate parents on parent-adolescent sexual health communication. Future areas of focus could address issues surrounding parental discomfort to further support increases in parental willingness and engagement in parent-adolescent sexual health communication

Introducing Mental Health Resources to Nurse Practitioner Residents

    Get PDF
This DNP Project identified the increased need for mental health resources after the COVID-19 pandemic. Studies showed the rate of anxiety, depression, and substance use has also been on the rise since the beginning of the pandemic. As the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic began to devastate the country mentally and physically, it became quickly apparent that additional resources to provide support for those suffering from mental illness were essential. This project aimed to introduce a Mental Health First Aid course within the Residency Program at the Center for Family Guidance. Participants were asked to complete a pre-test indicating their confidence in identifying, understanding, and responding to the signs and symptoms of mental illness and substance abuse in patients and colleagues. The DNP Project Leader then developed and implemented an educational presentation introducing mental health resource courses to nurse practitioner residents. Following participation in the educational session, nurse practitioner residents were asked to complete one of two mental health resource courses. Eleven participants completed the pre-test survey, and eight participants completed the post-test survey. Due to the small sample size, direct correlations could not be inferred; however, the post-test survey did show an overall increase in confidence in identifying, understanding, responding, communicating, and providing resources for patients and colleagues, among participants who completed the Mental Health First Aid course

Improving Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) Education and Access to Education for Healthcare Workers in a Rural Ambulatory Clinic

    Get PDF
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are prevalent across the United States, with one in five people diagnosed in 2018, resulting in nearly $16 billion in medical costs. The prevention and treatment of STIs have been identified as a priority area for improvement, with healthcare providers playing a critical role in education, diagnosing, and treating STIs. The aim of this capstone project was to improve STI education and access to education for healthcare workers in a rural ambulatory clinic. Through a needs assessment and the development of objectives and a timeline, the project identified and addressed gaps in STI education and resources, as well as improving the quality of care and outcomes for patients. Theoretical underpinnings will guide the project, with a focus on project management, cost-benefit analysis, and evaluation. The implementation of the project will be monitored for threats and barriers, with data interpretation and personal reflection contributing to ongoing quality improvement. Ultimately, the project aims to improve the health and well-being of patients in the rural community by enhancing STI education and access to education for healthcare providers
