Nursing Care During Natural Disasters, War Zones, and Mass Casualty Incidents: Implications for an Educational and Professional Overhaul
Emergency situations around the world are inevitable. Any nurse who practices for any period of time is sure to encounter situations like these. Their hospital may be flooded with traumatic and severely life-threatening patient cases where supplies can become scarce. In these situations, a nurse and all other healthcare personnel are expected to act effectively, efficiently and in a highly organized way. Despite this need, many hospitals fail to implement effective disaster preparedness programs and plans. This leaves healthcare workers at a loss for how to treat patients, communicate within and outside of the hospital, coordinate transport, and all the other aspects of caring for patients that become exceedingly challenging in the face of a disaster. Similarly, nursing schools have, in many cases, failed to properly educate new nurses about what to do and expect during a mass casualty incident. Many students walk into jobs and hospitals where they will encounter one of these situations, completely unprepared. Changes are alarmingly and clearly necessary both within the hospital systems as well as in educational systems and programs worldwide. These changes include better preparation for the disaster through drills, and clear plans in place that all personnel are aware of. This change must also include adequate psychological care is available to healthcare workers during and following the traumatic event. In education, schools must prepare students for a disaster event by providing information as well as simulation-based training for students, much in the same way that they educate students on other possible scenarios within their future profession. Nursing is an ever-changing profession. With the gradual increase of disastrous events both in the United States and beyond, the need for a professional and educational overhaul for nursing is glaringly obvious for nurses and healthcare systems to continue responding in the way they are expected to
TikTok and Self-Diagnosing Mental Illnesses: Perceived Reliability Factors, Vulnerabilities, and Dangers
TikTok’s popularity and ease of use with short-term consumption allow for greater access to online information. However, this information is not regulated nor fact-checked. Therefore, many users can acquire and spread the wrong messages, behaviors, and ideas surrounding mental illness. The purpose of this research was to examine the effects and factors of TikTok on self-diagnosing mental illnesses. A large literature was conducted to examine the effects of social media and the harms of self-diagnosing on users. Two studies were then developed and administered to determine the relationship between self-diagnosing and TikTok. Correlations, t-tests, and descriptive statistics were used to measure the data. Study one examined that when users find videos reliable (regardless of misinformation), then they are more likely to self-diagnose. Study two found that college-aged users, gender, communities, vague information, and authority figures affected someone’s likelihood to self-diagnose. The implications of this research explain that users should be more aware of the information they encounter. At the same time, companies should combat the spread of misinformation on all short-form platforms to prevent the harm of self-diagnosing their users. Future research should examine other populations, conduct experiments, and further validate measures to better understand the role of self-diagnosing and misinformation via social media
Todos las naciones, tribus, pueblos y lenguas: The Growing Need of Hispanic Protestant Churches in the United States
This thesis covers the growing movement of Protestantism amongst Hispanics in the United States. Although significant growth in this movement has occurred in the 21st century, the roots of this movement come from the early 20th century and started in Latin America. Today, more and more Hispanics are converting from Catholicism to Protestantism. Furthermore, more Hispanics are immigrating to the United States and may struggle to find a sense of belonging in their new home due to language and cultural barriers. This is where Hispanic churches rise to the occasion as they provide a place in which Hispanics can connect with others of similar cultures and speak the same language. With more immigrants coming in and the projected growth of Hispanics and the number of Spanish speakers in the United States, it is crucial that more churches are made. One might ask why, as churches are often thought of as only being used for religious purposes. Instead, Hispanic Protestant churches benefit immigrants by providing a community and other essential services that they may need to adjust to a new life and life in general. Some services include providing English classes, providing mental health support, and providing support for domestic abuse. The only way these churches can help Hispanics is if more of them are planted, which requires time, planning, and support from the local community and other churches for these new churches to come to life
Rhetorical Demagoguery: An Exploration of Trump’s and Hitler’s Rise to Power
While many scholars have examined the rhetoric of President Donald Trump and Adolf Hitler individually, there is a void of scholarly work that highlights the similarities between the two leaders’ use of grandiloquent language to stoke the passions of their perspective nations. In the past one hundred years, rhetoric and propaganda have been employed to push political agendas that are divisive and dangerous. Trump’s incendiary vocabulary–“enemy of the people,” “vermin,” “retribution,” etc., employed frequently throughout his campaign and presidency, in many ways echoes Hitler\u27s speeches and declarations. While their political strategies ultimately differed greatly, a close analysis of their speeches, transcripts, and broadcasts reveals comparable language styles and rhetoric that have implicit meanings that influence audiences/supporters and result in direct ramifications. The similarities of their styles –written and spoken– are readily apparent and, therefore, seamlessly permit analysis.
This study argues that Trump and Hitler ascended to power in very similar ways, but primarily through a variety of rhetorical exploitations and appeals. To corroborate this claim, this work will dissect historical events, speeches, and actions associated with each leader and their respective time and circumstances. The research suggests that both leaders relied on assertions that positioned them as outsiders; and each boldly claimed, as outsiders, only they could fix a broken and corrupt government. Additionally, an explosion of misinformation and propaganda became paramount to maintaining power and control. This work intends to contribute to the historical and political conversation regarding rhetoric, and its relation to obtaining and preserving power
