Community Educational Session on Identifying the Signs of Depression and Resources Available

    Get PDF
The DNP Project was designed to educate the community on identifying the signs of depression and the community resources available to them. The intent of the project was to improve the community’s knowledge of depression symptoms and the community resources available that offer assistance to those dealing with these symptoms. There is a great need for education on depression signs, as many in various communities suffer from untreated depression, which often leads to negative outcomes. The impact of the project implementation was measured by using pre- and post-survey data evaluating the participants\u27 overall knowledge of the signs of depression, stigma associated with depression, recognizing depression, and community resources available to get help. Knowledge in all six survey items demonstrated improvement in the post-survey after intervention. In conclusion, providing the community the education on the signs of depression and the resources available can increase knowledge and be effective in decreasing the risk of suicide

A Case Study to Determine the Literacy Needs Within Remediation Practices for Students in Grades 1-3

In order to effectively teach reading, it is not enough for a teacher to possess knowledge and skills alone. It is equally important to use evidence-based instructional approaches and interventions, especially when working with at-risk or struggling students. Without appropriate instructional materials and contexts, even the most competent teacher may fail to teach essential literacy skills, such as phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, spelling, and writing processes. As the importance of teacher quality gains attention at the state and federal levels, lesson structure and allocation of lesson time for literacy-related activities have become a focus. The emergence of structured literacy underscores the significance of a systematic and cumulative curriculum that explicitly and diagnostically teaches students phonology, sound-symbol association, syllables, morphology, syntax, and semantics; therefore, both skilled teachers and research-based instructional approaches are necessary for successful student literacy. Effective literacy instruction requires both skilled teachers and evidence-based instructional approaches. Structured literacy is especially useful for students in primary grades who are at risk or struggling with literacy. Remediation programs based on structured literacy have been shown to improve reading skills and comprehension in struggling readers, leading to better academic outcomes. By using a well-developed curriculum that teaches essential literacy skills, such as phonics, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, and syntax, structured literacy can help struggling students improve their reading abilities and reach their full potential

An Evaluation of the Process for Assigning Standardized Testing Accommodations for Students With Autism

    Get PDF
This dissertation evaluated the process for assigning standardized testing accommodations for students with autism on the standard course of study. The study captured current levels of teacher understanding, their perceptions regarding how testing accommodations might increase equitable access for students with autism, and how these beliefs influence the process of assigning accommodations. The study identified key themes surrounding current processes and equity through qualitative methods, including in-depth interviews with exceptional children and general education teachers and observation of professional learning communities and individualized education plan meetings. The findings revealed that inadequate teacher training and the lack of universal protocols for assigning testing accommodations resulted in faulty processes that increased barriers to equitable access for students. By providing a comprehensive look at the connection between frequently assigned accommodations and the characteristics of autism, this dissertation contributes insight into advocacy efforts for students, and professional development needs for teachers
