Building an Emphatic AI Coach & Agent
No full textTraditional AI models, including ChatGPT, primarily respond with verbose answers rather than engaging in natural, interactive conversations. Human dialogue thrives on clarification—asking the right questions to refine understanding—yet current AI systems leave the burden of re-prompting on the user. Our project aims to shift AI towards a more open and empathic approach by training models to ask clarifying questions rather than merely generating responses. To achieve this, we have built a pipeline of models that assess ambiguity, intent, and sentiment in user queries. These outputs, alongside the original prompt, are processed by an AI agent that determines whether a clarifying question is necessary before generating a response. This approach fosters steerable AI behavior, making models more agentic, adaptable, and human-like in conversation. By developing a dataset of high-quality clarifying questions—both synthetically generated and human-validated—we pave the way for next-generation AI assistants that actively seek to understand user intent rather than passively respond. This project has implications for instruction tuning, AI alignment, and conversational AI, ultimately making models more effective collaborators in human-AI interaction

Exploring processes of change: A narrative study of the journey from person status to patient status within a mental health low threshold facility
No full textChanges on a structural level that deals with documentation of healthcare in low threshold service within mental health provokes reactions. From being a service user where the focus has been on the resources, documentation of healthcare now forces the focus towards the service users\u27 challenges. Due to the services recovery orientation the service users\u27 voices need to be heard in this change. The purpose of this study was to explore how service users within a low threshold mental health service perceive being part of a structural change process within the service. The study is part of a larger research study where part of it is published elsewhere. Photovoice-workshops led to a photovoice exhibition which forms the basis for further analysis in this study. This data was interpreted through narrative analysis and identified three plots regarding services users\u27 experience of being part of the structural change process: the plot of unpredictable change, the plot of hope and the plot of new perspectives. These plots were further written into a coherent narrative - “A possible story of change”. The findings present how a structural change process appears in the given context, and how it is experienced for the service users affected by the changes.

Este texto y serie de imágenes describirán al Archivo Familiar del Río Colorado, un proyecto de investigación artística y curadurías colectivas que procura hacer sentido de las relaciones que sostenemos con el agua en la región Delta del Río Colorado. No nos enfocaremos en hacer aportaciones conceptuales para el campo académico, pero sí trataremos de presentar a este archivo vivo como una forma y tecnología autogestiva mediante la cual hemos comenzado a producir conocimiento situado en bucles de praxis, aprendiendo de las relaciones geológicas y más que humanas en las que existimos. Narraremos algunos de los programas públicos que hemos organizado y presentaremos una lectura del espacio geográfico que habitamos, haciendo énfasis en cómo entendemos que la asimetría de la frontera geopolítica México-Estados Unidos se incorpora en nuestra experiencia y memoria del espacio, el río y el agua. También iremos planteando una serie de preguntas que nos puedan ayudar a orientar la producción del Archivo Familiar del Río Colorado, ubicando cuáles son los límites y los potenciales de este archivo como forma, tanto para resistir a las pérdidas ecosistémicas que sufrimos en esta parte de la cuenca como para imaginar su futuro.
Abstract
This text and series of images will describe the Colorado River Family Archive, an artistic research and collective curatorial project that seeks to make sense of the relationships we have with water in the Colorado River Delta region. We will not focus on making conceptual contributions to the academic field, but we will try to present this living archive as a self-managing form and technology through which we have begun to produce knowledge situated in loops of praxis, learning from the geological and more-than-human relationships in which we exist. We will narrate some of the public programs we have organized and present a reading of the geographic space we inhabit, emphasizing how we understand that the characteristic asymmetry of the Mexico-United States geopolitical border is incorporated into our experience and memory of space, the river, and water. We will also raise a series of questions that can help us guide the production of the Colorado River Family Archive, identifying the limits and potential of this archive as a form, both to resist the ecosystem losses we suffer in this part of the basin and to imagine its future
