Scriptura Translata, Semper Transferenda: An English Version of Theodore Beza’s Syncretistic Abraham sacrifiant

    No full text
Theodore Beza’s 1550 Abraham sacrifiant continues a rich tradition of translation and exegesis of the Akedah in the vibrant context of the humanist Reformation. Beza translates not so much from one language to another, since he takes the Olivetan Bible’s text of Genesis 22 for the argument of his play, but rather fuses two cultures and genres, Biblical narrative and Greek tragedy. His choice entails a crucial tension: a drama of redemption cannot be tragic. In fact, Beza incorporates comic elements from both medieval and classical sources in his work. Nonetheless, his work puts in play Calvinist themes such as saving faith and predestination. A modern translation should be faithful both to Beza’s adaptation of classical forms, such as stichomythia and choral odes, and to his expression of reformed doctrine, in the spirit of Arthur Golding’s near-contemporary English version of 1575.

Stylistic Love Terms of Address Among Couples in Egyptian TV Series: Beyond Simple Expressions of Love

    No full text
Terms of address have not been explicitly or deeply explored from a stylistic perspective in the Arab world and beyond. This sociopragmatic study demonstrates how 227 tokens of love terms of address by 24 couples in six Egyptian TV series (2016–2024) construct the style of a specific social group and (re)shape societal stereotypes. A style is identified by the frequent co-occurrence of a linguistic feature with a specific social group more than others, serving social functions (Mejdell 2006). Performance is linked with styles and stereotypes by displaying linguistic variations among social groups, reflecting and shaping societal perceptions of social identities and linguistic practices (Schilling-Estes 1998). I argue that address terms are often a stylistic choice, where specific lexical meanings align with particular social groups and serve social goals beyond these meanings, and that their social use on screen is not arbitrary but governed by social rules and societal perceptions. Young upper-class men are depicted as using the style of love terms of address to manage their love relationships rather than simply express affection, reinforcing and negotiating societal and broader claims about gender

Drawing on the work of critical pedagogy scholars Paula Allman and Henry Giroux, this paper argues that reimagining information literacy as a critical epistemology requires a theory of learning capable of countering both the economic rationality and positivist assumptions that structure schooling and curriculum. For these reasons there is cause to revisit the implications of Paulo Freire’s pedagogy for critical information literacy. Freire’s interpretation of Marx’s dialectic, which is largely overlooked in Library and Information Sciences, supports a theory of resistance where an awareness of their immersion in antagonistic relations provide the foundation from which students and librarian-educators can deepen their understanding of the way information and education mediate experiences of social and political domination.

Bridging Canada’s Physician Shortage Paradox: Unlocking the Potential of International Medical Graduates

    No full text
Canada faces a critical paradox in healthcare: while physician shortages escalate, thousands of qualified, internationally trained medical graduates (IMGs) residing in Canada remain sidelined. This underutilization of talent persists despite the rising demand for doctors, particularly in rural and underserved regions. Structural barriers such as restrictive residency quotas, inconsistent provincial licensing systems, and concerns about training variability impede IMG integration.    Although IMGs undergo rigorous credential assessments, bridging programs, national licensing exams, and supervised practice readiness pathways, they remain disproportionately excluded from licensure compared to Canadian medical graduates (CMGs). Critics often cite issues of patient safety, communication barriers, and legal liability; however, evidence indicates that IMGs who pass Canadian regulatory filters perform comparably to domestically trained physicians. Programs like Practice-Ready Assessment (PRA) and national exams ensure competency and support public trust. Furthermore, language proficiency and cultural training are now mandatory in many provinces, facilitating equitable care delivery.    Despite these safeguards, IMGs are restricted to less than 10% of residency positions, contributing to underemployment and exacerbating physician shortages. Policy reforms such as expanding residency capacity, implementing alternative licensure pathways, and recalibrating perceptions of IMGs can bridge the workforce gap without compromising quality or fairness. This commentary suggests that leveraging IMGs is a practical strategy for sustainable healthcare delivery. Embracing IMG integration upholds Canada’s multicultural identity and enhances the health system’s resilience. With thoughtful policy design and cultural change, Canada can convert this latent talent into a driving force for equitable, high-quality care nationwide

A Gallery is Nothing More Than a Specific Location

A gallery serves as more than a physical space—it is a dynamic environment where exhibitions create new encounters for audiences and opportunities for artists. This reflection explores the evolving role of Gallery 1265 at UTSC and my personal experiences as a Facilities Coordinator during the 2024-25 season. Through hands-on engagement with installation processes, I discovered how curatorial decisions shape audience experiences, influencing how artworks are perceived. A case study of the Diminutive Hues exhibition highlights the unintended consequences of overemphasizing installation aesthetics, ultimately revealing that exhibition design must remain invisible to let the artworks take center stage. This realization underscores the delicate balance between presentation and artistic intent, affirming that a gallery’s true role is to bridge the gap between art and audience without imposing itself

Single-SNP GWAS of LDL on Chromosome 19: Replicating Known Associations as Motivation for Region-Level Tests

    No full text
Background: Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) is a type of cholesterol linked to an increased risk of heart attack and stroke. Studies by the Global Lipids Genetics Consortium (GLGC) show that genes on Chromosome 19, such as LDLR (low-density lipoprotein receptor) and ApoE (apolipoprotein), contribute to LDL blood concentration. Chromosomal regions such as genes can be defined as genetic variants called single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). To test for associations between LDL concentration and SNPs, researchers conduct genome-wide association studies (GWAS). Objectives: We conduct a single-SNP GWAS to test for associations between SNPs in Chromosome 19 and LDL concentrations. We aim to replicate known results from the GLGC.  Methods: We analysed trait and covariate data from the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA) and HRC panel-imputed SNP data from the CLSA version two Genomics2 dataset. Data were restricted to individuals of European ancestry, with a sample size of 19,669. We performed linear regression with Plink 2.0 for each SNP as a covariate with LDL concentration as the response. Other covariates include sex, age, age-sex interaction term, and three principal components to reflect residual population structure. Manhattan plots visualize signals of genetic association for each SNP using a genome-wide testing threshold of 510-8. Results: Chromosome 19 has 196 statistically significant SNPs out of 794,409 variants. The most significant is a SNP was located in ApoE (p-value ≈ 10-97). Conclusions: Several SNPs on Chromosome 19 are highly associated with LDL concentration. These results align with those from the GLGC, confirming our pipeline’s biological plausibility and sensitivity. We plan to perform region-level tests using software such as BigLD and RegionScan
