Performance Improvement for Vehicular Communications Using Alamouti Scheme with High Mobility, Journal of Telecommunications and Information Technology, 2020, nr 3

The IEEE 802.11p standard is the basic protocol for wireless access in a vehicular environment (WAVE), providing high throughput for multimedia and high quality for vehicular transmissions. However, IEEE 802.11p fails to offer any multi-antenna approaches. In this paper, a multipleinput single-output (MISO) implementation with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), aiming to improve the performance of IEEE 802.11p, is proposed. The authors investigate the impact of time-varying channel on the performance of Alamouti space-time block codes (STBC) in OFDM systems. The Alamouti STBC approach shows good performance in slow time-varying environments, while its Alamouti space frequency block codes (SFBC) counterpart performs better over fast time-varying environments. An adaptive switching scheme is proposed to select appropriate spaceblock coding (STBC or SFBC) in vehicular channels with high mobility levels. It is shown that the proposed adaptive scheme provides better performance compared with traditional spaceblock code

Estimation of UFMC Fading Channels Using H∞ Filter, Journal of Telekommunications and Information Technology, 2020, nr 2

Universal filtered multi-carrier (UFMC) modulation is a very powerful candidate to be employed for future 5G mobile systems. It overcomes the limitations and restrictions in current modulation techniques employed in 4G mobile systems and supports future applications, such as machineto-machine (M2M), device-to-device (D2D), and vehicle-tovehicle (V2V) communications. In this paper, we address the estimation of UFMC fading channels based on the comb-type pilot arrangement in the frequency domain. The basic solution is to estimate the fading channel based on the mean square error (MSE) or least square (LS) criteria with adaptive implementation using least mean square (LMS) or recursive least square (RLS) algorithms. However, these adaptive filters seem not to be effective, as they cannot fully exploit fading channel statistics, particularly at high Doppler rates. To take advantage of these statistics, time-variations of the fading channel are modeled by an autoregressive process (AR), and are tracked by an H∞ filter. This, however, requires that AR model parameters be known, which are estimated by solving the Yule-Walker equation (YWE), based on the Bessel autocorrelation function (ACF) of the fading channel with a known Doppler rate. Results of Matlab simulations show that the proposed H∞ filter-based channel estimator is more effective when compared with existing estimator

Implementation of the Concept of a Repository for Automated Processing of Semi-Structural Data, Journal of Telecommunications and Information Technology, 2020, nr 1

Semi-structural data tend to be problematic due to the sparsity of their attributes and due to the fact that, regardless of their type, they are immensely diverse. This means that data storage is a challenge, especially when the data contained within a relational database – often a strict requirement defined in advance. In this paper, we present a thoroughly described concept of a repository that is capable of storing and processing semi-structural data. Based on this concept, we establish a database model comprising the architecture and the tools needed to search the data and build relevant processors. The processor described may assign roles and dispatch tasks between the users. We demonstrate how the capacities of this repository are capable of overcoming current limitations by creating a system for facilitated digitization of scientific resources. In addition, we show that the repository in question is suitable for general use, and, as such, may be adapted to any domains in which semi-structural data are processed, without any additional work require

Energy Efficiency in 5G Communications – Conventional to Machine Learning Approaches, Journal of Telecommunications and Information Technology, 2020, nr 4

Demand for wireless and mobile data is increasing along with development of virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), mixed reality (MR), and extended reality (ER) applications. In order to handle ultra-high data exchange rates while offering low latency levels, fifth generation (5G) networks have been proposed. Energy efficiency is one of the key objectives of 5G networks. The notion is defined as the ratio of throughput and total power consumption, and is measured using the number of transmission bits per Joule. In this paper, we review state-of-the-art techniques ensuring good energy efficiency in 5G wireless networks. We cover the base-station on/off technique, simultaneous wireless information and power transfer, small cells, coexistence of long term evolution (LTE) and 5G, signal processing algorithms, and the latest machine learning techniques. Finally, a comparison of a few recent research papers focusing on energy-efficient hybrid beamforming designs in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems is presented. Results show that machine learningbased designs may replace best performing conventional techniques thanks to a reduced complexity machine learning encode

Modeling and Analysis of Additional Clear Channel Assessment to Improve Performance of IEEE 802.15.4-based MAC Protocol, Journal of Telecommunications and Information Technology, 2020, nr 3

Design of the MAC protocol is crucial in all wireless sensor networks (WSNs) due to its influence on the performance of the transceiver, i.e. the most energy-consuming component of each sensor node. A mechanism known as “carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance” (CSMA/CA) is used for accessing the wireless channel in the IEEE 802.15.4 standard-based MAC protocol in order to avoid collisions between the network’s communicating nodes. CSMA/CA relies on two clear channel assessments (CCA=2) for checking the status of the channel. In this paper, we develop an additional CCA algorithm for the two scenarios encountered in star topology-enabled WSNs. Next, we investigate the impact of an additional clear channel assessment (CCA=3) on performance in IEEE 802.15.4. We develop a Markov chain model for the proposed methodology, and validate it using Matlab. Simulation results show that there is a significant improvement of performance metrics in the IEEE 802.15.4 standard-based MAC protocol with an additional CC

Extrapolation of Electromagnetic Response from Linear Antennas in Time Domain without Late-Time Instabilities in Numerical Solution of EFI Equation, Journal of Telecommunications and Information Technology, 2020, nr 2

The paper presents a new hybrid method relied upon to solve integral equations of the electric field in time domain and to model linear antennas with pulse excitation. The method consists in a mixed, numerical-analytical description of the process that helps maintain the stability of calculations during the late time phase. As described in the analytical part, the modified spherical Bessel function of the first kind allows for extrapolation with a high degree of accuracy and loworder expressions. The modified spherical Bessel functions of the first kind are of the oscillating character, and their combination with the exponential factor makes them convenient for extrapolation of the answer of the antenna with pulse excitation. New functions are introduced to computational practic

Failure Correction of a Linear Array of Coupled Parallel Vertical Dipole Antennas, Journal of Telecommunications and Information Technology, 2020, nr 1

In this paper, a cuckoo search algorithm based on the combined characteristics of the brood parasite behavior and Levy flights is applied to correct the radiation pattern of a linear antenna array composed of parallel dipoles with faulty elements. An effort is made to restore the radiation pattern similar to one without any faulty elements, and the difference in the values of side lobe level and wide null depth of both patterns, as well as the voltage standing wave ratio obtained from the new voltage excitations become diminished. The examples presented in this paper show the effectiveness of this algorithm in correcting the radiation pattern of a linear array of 36 and 120 dipole antennas with four and ten failed elements, respectively. The results show that the matching condition and the wide null control produced by Cuckoo Search algorithm are more efficient in comparison with the benchmark failure correction algorithm. The approach adopted herein may be applied to other array configurations as wel

Time-shifted Pilot-based Scheduling with Adaptive Optimization for Pilot Contamination Reduction in Massive MIMO, Journal of Telecommunications and Information Technology, 2020, nr 4

Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is considered to be an emerging technique in wireless communication systems, as it offers the ability to boost channel capacity and spectral efficiency. However, a massive MIMO system requires huge base station (BS) antennas to handle users and suffers from inter-cell interference that leads to pilot contamination. To cope with this, time-shifted pilots are devised for avoiding interference between cells, by rearranging the order of transmitting pilots in different cells. In this paper, an adaptive-elephant-based spider monkey optimization (adaptive ESMO) mechanism is employed for time-shifted optimal pilot scheduling in a massive MIMO system. Here, user grouping is performed with the sparse fuzzy c-means (Sparse FCM) algorithm, grouping users based on such parameters as large-scale fading factor, SINR, and user distance. Here, the user grouping approach prevents inappropriate grouping of users, thus enabling effective grouping, even under the worst conditions in which the channel operates. Finally, optimal time-shifted scheduling of the pilot is performed using the proposed adaptive ESMO concept designed by incorporating adaptive tuning parameters. The efficiency of the adaptive ESMO approach is evaluated and reveals superior performance with the highest achievable uplink rate of 43.084 bps/Hz, the highest SINR of 132.9 dB, and maximum throughput of 2.633 Mbp
