Memorialization and nation-building: Shifts in historical framing in monuments constructed in Kyiv, Ukraine between Soviet control and independence

    Get PDF
It is easy to take monuments to historical events at face value. However, in observing monuments and memorials, it is possible to learn about how those in power utilize this medium to distribute intentional historical narratives to the public. In looking at monuments constructed in Kyiv, Ukraine, this can be seen in different historical monuments that have been erected across the city. Between Soviet control and Ukrainian independence since 1991, the manner in which history is framed in memorials has fundamentally shifted. Given the context of heightened tensions between the two countries in recent years, culminating in the invasion of Ukraine by its Russian neighbor in April 2022, observing memorialization trends can be useful in understanding the past and present relationship between these two states. Within these memorials lies a greater struggle for cultural identity, nation-building, and historical narrative creation

The Ups and Downs of Weight Cycling: How Fad Diets Can Negatively Affect Health

    Get PDF
It’s advice nearly every patient has heard at least once in their life: you need to lose weight. Often, this is prescribed as a combination of a healthy diet and exercise. However, ‘fad diets’, so-called due to their fluctuating popularity from societal trends, are seen as quick and easy diet modifications that produce weight loss quickly. For some, these diets are not sustainable and can lead to dangerous cycles of losing weight, easing restrictions, and re-gaining weight that was lost. Weight-cycling is a dangerous effect of fad diets, and the long-term physical and psychological effects of weight cycling can ultimately lead to worse health outcomes. With each cycle of losing and regaining weight, both the body and mind undergo great stress, the cardiovascular and metabolic systems within the body become less efficient and can develop long term complications. Instead, targeting a healthy, well-balanced diet recommended by clinicians can prevent weight cycling and protect against the negative health effects of obesity

When college students transition from life at home to life at school, they may be faced with a variety of stressors such as navigating a more rigorous academic environment or an overload of new commitments and responsibilities. Struggling with the change in environment is one of the major problems faced among college students and often leads to more stress and anxiety, lack of sleep hygiene, and poor eating habits. Fortunately, mindful meditation has been proven to help with these issues. Mindful meditation is the practice of focusing or clearing the mind by using certain mental and physical techniques. It has a role in helping students transition into college and improve their learning which in turn, decreases stress and anxiety. Meditation also promotes relaxation and prepares the body for sleep, allowing a more restful night with fewer sleep disturbances. Lastly, meditation can promote healthy eating and physical activity. Implementing meditation into a college student’s daily life is a quick and easy way to improve overall health and well-being

Mediational Effect of Teacher-Based Discrimination on Academic Performance: An Intersectional Analysis of Race, Gender, and Income/Class

    No full text
Drawing on prior research, this study applies an intersectional framework to investigate discrimination in the context of teacher–student relationships and its influence on students’ academic outcomes. Outcomes assessed were inclusive of self-efficacy, school attendance, and grade point average (GPA). For this analysis, structural equation modeling was used with a cross-sectional sample of the Maryland and Adolescent Development in Context Study (MADICS) and the youth self-administered (YSA) questionnaires administered when the youth were in 8th grade (Wave 3). A total of 1182 students completed the survey, of whom 704 were selected for this study. Findings show teacher discrimination as a mechanism to uncover some of the ways race, gender, and income simultaneously intersect to affect students’ academic outcomes. The current study confirms and extends prior work establishing associations among race, gender, income, and teacher discrimination and academic outcomes among African American youth. African American students, especially males, regardless of income levels, may benefit directly—evidenced in visible academic performance—from more positive and race-conscious interactions with teachers. Future implications for practice are shared

On “the Relational Distinctiveness of Jesus Christ” in the Work of Stanley Samartha

THOUGH each generation of theologians has its own questions and priorities, the work of previous generations may still provide insights into new questions. Stanley Samartha’s theological reflections were mainly aimed at overcoming Christian exceptionalism and establishing a basis for constructive dialogue. However, in the process, he also attempted to develop a new way of understanding the particularity of Christianity, which resonates with my own interest in recovering and reinterpreting the notion of religious distinctiveness in response to the current tendency to focus on religious universals and blur religious boundaries
