    How American Christians Practice Yoga

    No full text
RECENTLY, religious studies scholars and Christian practitioners alike have joined in discussions about the effect of Christian yoga on one’s spiritual life. The following article analyzes findings from an online survey based on Christian yoga practitioners\u27 behaviors. The findings affirm that Christians who practice yoga see mystical experiences as a part of their practice but separate this from elements of bhakti yoga. This phenomenon is predicated on practitioners\u27 unfamiliarity with and resistance to engaging with the historical origins of yoga beyond its physical practices, instead shaping their yoga practice to fit their prior faith commitments

    No full text
IN virtue of important works in the fields of lexicography, grammar, and translation, Diogo Ribeiro S.J. (1561-1635) is a key figure in Indian missionary linguistics as well as in the development of Christian Konkani. He also plays a pivotal role in the reception history of the more well-known Thomas Stephens. In the preface of his Konkani translation of Roberto Bellarmino’s Dichiarazione più copiosa della dottrina Cristiana , Ribeiro describes his translation policy and argues for controversial choices where he follows the practice of Thomas Stephens. The present article analyzes Ribeiro’s translation policy and shows how he puts it into practice in the said translation

Effects of Dissolved Oxygen on Northern Leopard Frog (Lithobates pipiens) Gastrocnemius Muscle Recruitment and Fatigue

Dissolved oxygen levels in aquatic systems have decreased because of temperature increases caused by climate change, which in turn has affected ecosystems and wildlife. Many physiological processes in aquatic organisms require a certain dissolved-oxygen range, and decreasing levels can compromise proper functioning. Previous studies have linked muscle performance to dissolved oxygen levels in a variety of aquatic species, but less research has been dedicated to amphibians. Because many amphibians engage in cutaneous respiration, especially when dwelling in aquatic habitats, dissolved oxygen levels may have a significant impact on muscle performance in this taxon. This experiment investigated the effects of dissolved oxygen and time in vitro on frog skeletal muscle contractile force and fatigue. Results did not vary significantly when dissolved oxygen was altered, but fatigue and contractile force experiments did correlate with time in vitro. Although we did not find an effect of dissolved oxygen levels on muscle characteristics in vitro, a better understanding of the effects of dissolved oxygen on muscle performance, particularly in vivo, could be beneficial as climate change alters the oxygen content of aquatic systems, with the potential to affect physiology and behavior. Keywords: cutaneous respiration, dissolved oxygen, contractile force, fatigue, in vitr

Opening an Existential Window into Wuthering Heights and The Metamorphosis

This paper explores the existential theme of authenticity in two literary works, Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights and Franz Kafka’s The Metamorphosis, through the lens of Albert Camus’s philosophy as presented in The Myth of Sisyphus. The analysis focuses on the characters’ struggles to carve out meaningful existences, the symbolism of closed-in structures and the absurd, and failed attempts at rationalization. Through a literary exploration, this paper aims to acknowledge existential dilemmas presented in Brontë’s and Kafka’s works and the importance of recognizing the absurdity of life

This is a score and analysis of Charting the Stars: Hypatia of Alexandria which is for Solo Violin and Chamber Winds. This piece is a single movement tone poem representing Hypatia of Alexandria’s life. The piece has six sections, and each represents a different part of Hypatia’s life, leading to her violent murder. The first section represents Hypatia’s childhood learning. The second section represents Hypatia growing into a respected philosopher. Next represented is Hypatia’s connection to Neoplatonism, followed by a section that represents Hypatia’s life as a public philosopher and political advisor. The fifth section shows political and religious conflict in Alexandria, and the final section represents Hypatia’s public and brutal murder. . The historical story and details of Hypatia’s life are very important to the piece. The musical structure and aesthetics are chosen to reflect the narrative throughout. The analytical paper that accompanies the score discusses how these events are represented in the musical score. This piece was commissioned by the Brandywine Wind of Greenfield, Indiana, and there is also a reflection of the Brandywine Wind rehearsal and performance after the analysis

Undergraduates\u27 Perceptions of Campus Response to Sexual Assault: A Butler University Case Study

Sexual assault and misconduct on college campuses is a pervasive and long-standing problem. As such, students’ views of campus climate, safety, and their universities’ response and prevention policies and practices remain paramount. Using an anonymous survey, the current research examines how undergraduate students at Butler University perceive the campus climate regarding sexual assault and misconduct and how they interpret and assess the university’s response. The questionnaire posed a series of questions concerning students’ knowledge and access to resources, general feelings of safety, and interpretation of university responses. Findings suggest that most respondents believe their university handles sexual assault and misconduct moderately well, but most respondents do not feel comfortable navigating campus resources. Qualitative findings reveal an underlying belief that survivors are not always adequately supported at the university and that students do not trust university resources to meet the needs of someone who has experienced sexual assault or misconduct. Institutional policies and practices are discussed as a way to affect meaningful change on this college campus

Examining Women’s Power Under Fascism: Francoist Spain

Due to the #MeToo movement and the overturning of Roe v. Wade debates about women\u27s power are at the forefront of society. These debates have sparked an increase in trying to understand how political systems function, as well as how those systems allocate power and agency to women. Using the case of Francisco Franco’s rule over Spain from 1939 to 1977, a conclusion was drawn that the power and agency that women have is most often within the home and family life, which is both the power and the limit of it. Unless they were in a position of high societal standing, then they would not have much ability to make significant decisions or wield significant societal power

Effect of Music on Executive Functioning in Children

The present study investigates the impact of music listening and singing on sustained attention in typically developing school-aged children. Participants (N=12) were randomly assigned to one of three conditions: music listening, singing, or paced speech, during which they focused on a predetermined keyword presented in two musical pieces. In the listening condition, participants raised their hands when they heard or said the keyword. In the paced speech and singing conditions, the children omitted only that target word while speaking or singing the other lyrics. We measured baseline inhibition and executive functioning (Stroop Color Word test) and attention (Sustained Attention Response Task) before and after completing the two songs. Additionally, a mood survey was administered to both children and parents at the beginning and end of the study. Results indicated no significant difference in executive functioning and attention pre- to post-test difference scores across the music-singing, paced-speech, and listening conditions (all ps \u3e .05). However, the survey revealed improved mood among children following the music-singing task (parent ratings, p = .026; child ratings, p = .073), despite reporting increased fatigue. In sum, the three song tasks did not differentially affect executive functioning and attention but did improve mood, suggesting that music can mediate cognitive effort associated with such tests. In the future, music should be used for children with executive functioning issues, such as children who stutter, and who could benefit from enjoyable cognitive interventions

Investigating the Relationships between Study Abroad, Language Immersion, and Intercultural Sensitivity

An increasing number of students are choosing to study abroad. Once only an experience for those learning a language (University of Delaware, 2024), international education has become much more accessible for students of all disciplines. When choosing a program, students face a decision in choosing the level of language immersion and learning the trip will offer. This study examined the impact of different levels of language immersion on a student\u27s intercultural sensitivity following a short-term study abroad trip. Intercultural sensitivity, defined as, “an individual\u27s ability to develop emotion towards understanding and appreciating cultural differences that promotes appropriate and effective behavior in intercultural communication” (Chen & Starosta, 1997), is especially important for college students entering a globalized workforce. Fifty-four sources detailing short-term study abroad trips with different levels of language immersion were critically analyzed. The data revealed short-term trips with formal language instruction as the most effective in promoting growth in students’ intercultural sensitivity. However, a deeper analysis suggests the value of informal language programs as well due to their heightened accessibility to students who are not only pursuing language learning opportunities. The findings of this study will aid students in choosing an international education program, and inform employers of qualitative differences across the international experiences of applicants. Additionally, this study serves to advise universities in designing study abroad opportunities. Finally, this study underscores a need for increased research in the study abroad field, especially in regards to effects of language immersion on intercultural sensitivity
