    In 2013, the Oregon Legislature passed House Bill 3000, the Children’s Vision Screening Act, requiring all children entering public school kindergarten to have a vision screening. As the lobbyist for the Oregon Academy of Ophthalmology, Nan worked in support ofthis legislation. Joannah Vaughn, director of children’s vision screening at Oregon Health and Science University’s Elks Children’s Eye Clinic, also supported the legislation. She and her staff were already screening several thousand children at Head Start programs every year. One day at the Capitol, she and Nan were discussing how to get thousands of more children screened each year. Joannah had an idea. “Don’t you represent the Oregon Library Association?” she asked. “Public libraries would be a great place to have children’s vision screenings. If libraries provide the space, we’ll provide the staff to do free children’s vision screenings!” Since then, the OLA Board has endorsed free children’s vision screenings as a project for public library participation. Pam North and Jane Corry have met with the Clinic staff at OHSU. And See to Read has become a reality

    Creating Engaging Library Experiences through Effective Content Marketing

    A cherished goal of libraries and information organizations has always been to engage the community. The digital revolution is ushering in new ways to deliver and combine services in the prevailing experience economy. In a recent study of more than 1,000 adults in the United States and the United Kingdom, researchers found that 81 percent of Millennials, 79 percent of Gen Xers, and 78 percent of Baby Boomers value experiences more than they do material items (Pally, 2013). Moreover, we have a fairly good idea of the methods customers are using to read, review, research and consume library services and programming. However, the challenge is not how communities’ information expectations are evolving—whether it is their preference for receiving information services via a library app, Twitter or Facebook—but to discover and manage what our communities value most and to transform their expectations into memorable and enriching experiences in physical and virtual environments. Can you imagine a future in the library and information science (LIS) profession where libraries are not judged by the size of collections and service offerings but rather by experiences? Well, it is already happening! This transformation calls for a shift in our marketing and communication approaches in order to provide robust and compelling library experiences to the communities we serve. In this article, I focus on how libraries and information organizations can create engaging experiences by embracing the SAVE (Solution, Access, Value and Education) framework and through effective content management

    Exploring Sustainable Transportation Attitudes and Stages of Change Using Survey and Geospatial Data in New England Campus Commuters

    This paper presents findings of a two-campus project designed to assess alternative/sustainable transportation (AT), which is defined as commuting via non-SOVs (single occupancy vehicles) such as transit, carpooling, walking, or biking. One of the objectives was to test the application of a well-known behavior change model, the Transtheoretical Model of Change (TTM), to transportation behaviors. Additionally, geospatial analysis and visualization were applied using the TTM measures. The survey results show that commuting distances, transit connectivity, and status (i.e., students, staff, and faculty) affected commute modes and stages of readiness to use AT. Another important finding was that the survey data for AT replicated TTM relationship predictions between constructs and stages of change

    Regression Model Evaluation for Highway Bridge Component Deterioration Using National Bridge Inventory Data

    Accurate prediction of bridge component condition over time is critical for determining a reliable maintenance, repair, and rehabilitation (MRR) strategy for highway bridges. Based on bridge inspection data, regression models are the most-widely adopted tools used by researchers and state agencies to predict future bridge condition (FHWA 2007). Various regression models can produce quite different results because of the differences in modeling assumptions. The evaluation of model quality can be challenging and sometimes subjective. In this study, an external validation procedure was developed to quantitatively compare the forecasting power of different regression models for highway bridge component deterioration. Several regression models for highway bridge component rating over time were compared using the proposed procedure and a traditional apparent model evaluation method based on the goodness-of-fit to data. The results obtained by applying the two methods are compared and discussed in this paper

    The Fichtelgebirge Bead and Button Industry of Bavaria

    Venice and Bohemia are generally considered to be the principal bead manufacturers of Europe. Yet Germany, especially the Fichtelgebirge region of northeastern Bavaria, produced large quantities of glass beads for the world market beginning in the 15th century, if not even earlier, and continued to do so well into the 20th century. The Fichtelgebirge industry is especially notable for two things: 1) the utilization of furnace-winding technology which, based on our current knowledge, was not employed to a significant degree elsewhere in Europe during the post-medieval period, and 2) the localized use of Proterobas, a greenish igneous rock, to produce opaque black beads and buttons without any additives until the early 19th century. This article presents a history of the industry and describes the products and the technology involved. It also provides a preliminary assessment of the chemical composition of the various products
