Exploratory excavations carried out in Schwarzenberg am Böhmerwald, Upper Austria, uncovered the remains of an unrecorded glassworks. Part of a furnace was exposed, along with glass beads and buttons, as well as holloware and flat glass fragments from the 17th and early 18th centuries. This article describes the finds and their relationship to the nearby Sonnenschlag glassworks where similar beads and glassware fragments have been collected. Both sites are related to the beadmaking industry in the nearby Bavarian and Bohemian forests, which experienced a veritable bead boom around 1700

In 2022, the Lake Oswego Public Library adopted a new mission statement: “Together, we inspire discovery and cultivate well-being by welcoming all people to read, learn, and connect." This mission statement inspired the library to plan an expansion of its World Languages offerings. My prior success building a World Languages collection at a California boarding school with an international student body aligned well with the library’s goals. The project ultimately resulted in the creation of a World Languages collection for adults, a significant expansion and upgrade to the children’s World Languages section, and the formation of an inclusive adult World Languages Conversation Group

During the mid-19th century, some scholars believed that the chevron beads found in early Indian graves had been brought to North America by globe-trotting Phoenicians or representatives of some other higher European civilization. A paper on the subject published in 1862 by one of the theory's proponents is reproduced here, along with contemporary descriptions and illustrations of the beads under discussion
