Vouchers for treehoppers (Hemiptera: Membracidae) collected in Benton, Josephine, and Yamhill Counties, Oregon

    Get PDF
Treehopper insect populations (Hemiptera: Membracidae) were surveyed in 2018 in Benton, Josephine, and Yamhill Counties, Oregon to determine their potential roles in the epidemiology of Grapevine red blotch virus. Stictocephala basalis and Tortistilus albidosparsus were identified through a taxonomic assessment of samples collected by hand near vineyards and in a natural area. Historical presence of Spissistilus festinus in the Willamette Valley is discussed. Voucher specimens were deposited in the Oregon State Arthropod Collection and at the United States National Museum of Natural History

The Library Squad: Tweens in the Public Library

    Get PDF
Though tween services in libraries are far from new, there is surprisingly very little written about them. Unlike early literacy, which is undoubtedly the most common priority amongst librarians serving youth, tween services might seem like the newest passing trend. Some libraries have dedicated tween librarians who not only offer tween-specific programs but curate tween collections. Other libraries offer combination tween and teen programs. At the downtown Eugene Public Library, tween programs fall under the umbrella of school-age programming for youth ages six to twelve. Trend or not, youth services staff have excitedly begun to delve more deeply into this often forgotten stage

    Summer Outreach Crew: An Experiment

    Get PDF
In an effort to bring engaging and interactive programming to families around our city and to promote summer reading, the Beaverton City Library formed a Summer Outreach Crew (SOX) of six staff members that visited parks, apartment complexes, free lunch sites, camps, and summer school sites from June to August 2019. Each member of SOX visited an outreach location in the community for approximately one hour once a week where they interacted with lots of children, teens, and caregivers who in some cases were not regular library users. We brought science experiments, games, trivia, robots, art activities, and much more and left families excited about what the library has to offer! Regardless of the size of your staff or the funding available, we believe there are aspects of our outreach plan that would work for any library. When we set out to start planning our summer outreach efforts, we wanted to ensure we visited some areas of our city that were not close to either of our two library branches and were not already receiving services from the library. We also wanted to be sure to visit locations where families were already present, rather than asking families to come to us. We put together a team of staff who were especially excited about bringing library services outside our four walls and programming in non-traditional spaces

Baby, I Was Born This Way! How Local Teens Helped a Library Deliver an LGBTQ Collection

    Get PDF
While the organization We Need Diverse Books has increased the number of high-quality LGBTQ books being published by mainstream publishers, it hasn’t gotten easier for teens to find them on library shelves. They often don’t know the books exist and aren’t comfortable asking for assistance from library staff. In order to bridge this gap, librarians working with teens need to be more proactive in designing collections and spaces that improve access to LGBTQ resources. In this article, we outline how Oregon City Public Library worked with a local group of LGBTQ teens to develop a Teen LGBTQ collection. By sharing our experiences and the resources we utilized, we hope to provide other libraries with a process they can use to meet the unique needs of teens in their communities. While a dedicated LGBTQ collection was the best choice for us, something different might work better for you

Herder’s Ideas for a Philosophy of Human History (1784-1791), or: the Anthropological De-struction of “Africa”

    Get PDF
In his work Ideas for a Philosophy of Human History (1784-1791), the preacher and philosopher Johann Gottfried Herder deals critically with the philosophy of Enlightenment, in which he sees the seed of a racial and cultural classification that considers peoples outside Europe as inferior. This centrally included Africa and its inhabitants as represented by German philosophers. Such a way of imagining Africa, widely shared amongst thinkers of the Enlightenment, echoes still today in various representations in the Western media, and could even serve as an explanation of the current migration drama in the Mediterranean. Herder, who was well informed of these representations in his own day, attempted, in Ideas, to deconstruct the then prevalent image of Africa and its peoples, and thereby entered into an intellectual dispute with his philosophical contemporaries, whose position was to reaffirm the supremacy of European culture and soe justify slavery and colonialism. This paper first focuses on Herder’s context, then explains his positions and his work, and shows how his attempt ended in a de-construction of the «Africa» of the Enlightenment

La flor de mi secreto: El deseo de la creación en Pedro Almodóvar

The Flower of My Secret (1995) stands out as one of the least cited films in Pedro Almodóvar’s filmography. This absence of critical attention contrasts with the care that the director put into the construction of its characters and the consideration he paid to each of the details that made up this melodrama. The flower of my secret keeps many of Almodóvar’s usual traits, but with a particular tone that makes this film a defining moment in his career, since it marks a transition in his creative process, it constitutes a before and an after in his filmic production. In this essay I analyze the trope of creation in The Flower of My Secret and explain the reasons why this film could be considered Almodóvar’s most metafictional work, since it reflects on each of the elements that are part of his creative universe. The film is an eulogy to the process of both literary and cinematographic creation in the format of a melodrama; the viewer travels, in 103 minutes, across the tropes that constitute the Almodovarian universe, either explicitly or through allusion. The film pays tribute to its name.

The Directors Round Table at Cine-Lit with Film Directors Juan Carlos Valdivia, Celina Murga, Mariana Chenillo, Carlos Marqués-Marcet, Javier Corcuera and Gabriela Martínez Escobar

Abstract: Since its inception in 1991, the Cine-Lit film conference, sponsored by multiple Oregon universities, in conjunction with the Portland International Film Festival, has climaxed with the Directors Round Table of invitees, all auteurs, from Spain and Latin America after several days of screenings of films from these geographical areas and the presentation of academic papers. At Cine-Lit 8 (2015), we were fortunate to attend one of the best Directors Round Tables ever. Below the reader will find a translation of that conversation with six directors about problems of globalization, film financing in their countries and the local as well as the international distribution of their films
