    Get PDF
Beyond HTTPS and the Cloud: Building a Safe and Secure Web Resource for DACA and Undocumented Students

In 2016 and 2017, after the election of Donald Trump, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program was in danger of being suspended or revoked entirely. This left many Oregon State University students in legal limbo, impacting their success as students as well as their ability to pay for college. The Department of Homeland Security, especially the small department Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), ballooned in influence with the new administration. Trump had made anti-immigration a cornerstone of his campaign and that did not slow down once he took office. Undocumented students were now staring down new legal and financial challenges that were well outside their (and university) control. The university needed to respond quickly to changes in immigration policy, aid students who were struggling, and have one central location for advisors and students to find resources. The Oregon State University (OSU) library got involved in the university's effort to help DACA and undocumented students. At the time, relevant resources were siloed across campus, so it was difficult for students to know what resources were available. Even advisors couldn't navigate the various systems. For example, on the OSU website, the Admissions page and Student Legal Services page both had relevant information, but they didn't refer back to one another. To help resolve this problem, the library offered to gather the resources distributed across campus for undocumented and DACA students. After the resources were collected, I was approached by one of the librarians on the project to develop a more permanent technical solution. I'm a website developer for the OSU Valley Library. Just like most smaller libraries, the Valley Library relies on third-party vendors for many services; however, my department also creates custom web solutions for the library. Because this project required special privacy and security provisions for this vulnerable student population, the library opted for a custom solution

The Little Box in the Corner: Chat Widgets Offer Safe and In-Depth Reference

Those of us working in libraries, including university and college libraries, know the challenges the COVID-19 pandemic brought to light. However, we also know that many (if not all) of these challenges existed pre-pandemic and will continue to exist when we have reached a post-pandemic future. Issues of connectedness and access to services—and to people—will continue to be a concern for any institution aiming for improved equity and outcomes for those they serve. Blue Mountain Community College (BMCC) in Pendleton, Oregon, implemented LibChat, an online live chat service made for libraries and hosted by Springshare. Since its implementation in April 2020, LibChat has already assisted the BMCC Library and its wider community with these issues, as it applies to everything from internal communication, flexible work schedules and environments and, of course, response to student, faculty, staff, and community needs. Additionally, LibChat can continue to assist with these issues as we move forward and evolve with our community and its needs

    Get PDF
Strategies to Improve the Use of Live Synchronous Meetings in Blended, Remote, and Online Courses [Archived]

Distance education over the years has been defined by the ability of students to learn at any time, from anywhere. Thus, it is not surprising that most online courses rely solely on asynchronous text-based online communication, such as email and discussion forums. However, the COVID- 19 pandemic and the rise of emergency remote teaching have sparked an increased interest in using web conferencing software (e.g., Zoom, WebEx, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams) to hold live synchronous meetings, often on a set day and time each week, instead of asynchronous discussions. But as convenient as it can be to move classroom instruction to live synchronous meetings, instructors and students have quickly experienced some drawbacks to using this mode of instruction. Given this problem, we set out to curate a list of strategies to improve the use of live synchronous meetings based on the literature and our combined experience designing and teaching online over the years. In this paper, we describe some affordances and constraints of live synchronous meetings and then describe some strategies that instructors can use to improve their use of these meetings, whether that be in a blended, remote, or online course

Improving Online Discussion Boards [Archived]: What Do Students Say?

    Get PDF
Asynchronous online discussion boards are a primary tool for instructors to cultivate social and cognitive presence in an online classroom. This article investigates the undergraduate student experience with remote learning during COVID-19 with the intent to examine the purpose and structure of online discussion boards. Researchers used semi-structured student interviews and student course evaluations to analyze learner perceptions of online class discussions. Though the goals of discussion boards are to provide a space for learner to learner interaction and to enhance critical thinking skills, discussion boards often fall short of these intended outcomes due to discussions feeling repetitive and artificial. Findings indicate that long-held traditional practices can be improved with different strategies; students value opportunities to ask questions and have choice. Reimagining the structure of online discussion boards can increase engagement and deepen learning

Approaching the Library Behavior Policy with Justice and Access at the Forefront

During the COVID pandemic and the overlapping racial reckoning, the inequalities of resources and the disparities of the impact on our country and our communities have been exposed more than ever. Like most libraries, at Sherwood Public Library, we had tangible restrictions to our operations, were temporarily limited to curbside and virtual services, and reopened our doors to a community navigating multiple traumas and injustices. As we prepared to welcome our patrons back inside, our existing Behavior Policy (Sherwood Public Library, 2022) was inadequate, lacking the conviction of antiracism and trauma-informed customer service that we knew we needed
