Interview with Magdalena Naruszewicz
Get PDFMagdalena Naruszewicz (she/her) was born in Chicago, Illinois. Naruszewicz grew up dancing and has held onto the practice ever since she started as a child. In 2014, the same year she started attending Taft High School, her father was diagnosed with cancer. Two years later, in 2016, he passed away. In 2018, Naruszewicz graduated from Taft High School and started at Columbia College Chicago that Fall as a Dance major. In 2019, she experienced a traumatic back injury. In the Spring of 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic broke out, she continued to live at home with her mother and siblings as she transitioned to remote learning. Naruszewicz continues to pursue a BFA in Dance at Columbia College Chicago and plans to graduate in 2022.https://digitalcommons.colum.edu/capturingquarantine/1031/thumbnail.jp

Interview with Alex Schmelter
Get PDFAlex Schmelter was born in Lake Forest, Illinois to George Schmelter from Indiana, and Illinois native Kristin MacMurray. Schmelter was raised in Lake Villa, Illinois and was educated at Grayslake North High School. Alex spent summers working at Six Flags Great America in Gurnee, Illinois and at an Amazon delivery facility. In 2017 Schmelter had an internship at Shalom Television working as a PA/stagehand that offered a valuable experience that now helps him on film sets at Columbia College. Schmelter spent several years volunteering for the St. Vincent DePaul Society at Prince of Peace Catholic Church helping with home visits, food trucks, food pantries. Schmelter also spent a summer assisting in Praying Pelican Missions in Puerto Rico hurricane relief in 2018. This work consisted of building houses, facilities for other volunteers, and helping rebuild and clean other devastated areas. Alex came to Columbia College Chicago in 2018 to study film, but a passion for literature, inspired by former high school teachers as well as his sister, led Schmelter to change his major. Queer Makishi – is a triple-conscious journey through morning rituals of awakening. This black, mixed, and queer performance activates auto-ethnographic memory, absurd fantasy, and spiritual contemplation through music, language, movement, and visual montage.
Queer Makishi wrestles with divergent masks from the traditions of clowning, minstrelsy, drag, camp, and absurdism in an attempt to reconcile these multiple selves in relationship to the Mother-Goddess, Oshun, and the trickster god, Legba. This piece seeks to explore the fragmented self of triple-consciousness as represented through the author’s persona. Finally, Queer Makishi celebrates the simultaneity and complexity these multiple selves bring to the crossroads of transformation.https://digitalcommons.colum.edu/theses_edpp/1000/thumbnail.jp
