President’s Report 
 
 
 
1. The XIIIth International Dostoevsky Society General Assembly 
Meeting opened with remarks by the IDS President, Professor Ulrich 
Schmid. Professor Schmid announced his resignation, gave an update on 
the IDS journal, Dostoevsky Studies, reported on the creation of 
Dostoevsky Monographs, a new series that will supplement the journal, 
and reported that the Executive Committee was proposing some revisions 
to the IDS Constitution, which has not been amended since its adoption in 
1971.  
 
2. The outgoing Executive Secretary, Professor Susan McReynolds Oddo, 
then reported on IDS activities in the past three years, including the 
proposals for constitution revision and the establishment of an IDS panel 
at the Modern Language Association Convention.  
 
3. Professor Schmid introduced a proposal to reduce the number of 
regional coordinators to three – North America, Europe and Russia. This 
generated a lively discussion about the advantages and disadvantages of 
having individual country representatives. The Assembly voted to keep 
the current number and possibly to add new members as other countries 
develop regional Dostoevsky societies. 
 
4. Professor Schmid opened a discussion of new member countries 
forming their own societies. He proposed that each country form its own 
society, create its own by-laws, and then propose candidacy to the 
Executive Council of the IDS. The Assembly approved his proposal.

5. Professor Schmid announced that the XIVth IDS symposium will be in 
Napoli, Italy. He reported that Professor Michaela Bohmig had agreed to 
be the IDS contact at the Istituto italiano per gli studii filosofici, where 
the symposium will be held in 2010.  
 
6. Professor Schmid announced the election of new officers. Professor 
Deborah Martinsen was elected President, Professor Stefano Aloe 
Executive Secretary, and Professor Nel Grillaert Treasurer. Professor 
Martinsen then appointed Professor Schmid as Honorary IDS President 
and member of the Organizing Committee for the next symposium. After 
thanking the membership by promising to do her best to be as good a 
servant to the IDS as our founding mother, Professor Nadine Natov, 
Professor Martinsen invoked a moment of silent remembrance for all the 
members IDS had lost in the preceding three years, particularly our 
founding mother Nadine Natov, the President of the Russian Dostoevsky 
Society Vladimir Tunimanov, our member of the Honorary Board and 
Vice-President of the IDS Victor Terras, and our faithful servants 
Vladimir Svitel’skii and Vladimir Vladimirtsev.  
 
Following the General Assembly, the Executive Committee established 
an organizing committee for the Napoli conference in 2010. Members 
include the Italian regional committee Stefano Aloe, Michaela Bohmig, 
Rosanna Casari, and Marco Cartozzolo as well as Ulrich Schmid and 
Deborah Martinsen. In September, the conference proposal developed by 
the Committee was accepted by the Istituto italiano per gli studii 
filosofici.  
 
At the request of Professor Nina Kaucisvili, Deborah Martinsen spoke 
with our Russian colleagues to explore the possibility of holding the XVth 
IDS Symposium in St. Petersburg and Moscow in the summer of 2013.

Dunja Brötz ist als komparatistisch orientierte Slawistin am Institut für 
Vergleichende Literaturwissenschaft der Universität Innsbruck tätig und 
liefert mit der vorliegenden Monographie einen wesentlichen Beitrag zur 
Filmwissenschaft wie auch zur Dostojewskij-Forschung. Analysiert wer-
den drei Verfilmungen des Romans Der Idiot. 
Die Monographie gliedert sich in sechs große Kapitel, denen eine 
Einleitung vorgeschaltet und ein Schlusswort nachgestellt sind. Die sechs 
Kapitel bilden zwei Teile, von denen der erste in drei Kapiteln das 
Material und die gewählten methodischen Zugriffe erläutert. Der zweite 
Teil exponiert in jedem seiner drei Kapitel jeweils alle drei Verfilmungen. 
Das heißt: Alle drei Filme werden, jeweils als Bündel, dreimal analysiert. 
Und das jedesmal aufgrund eines anderen Fragekatalogs, Folie bleibt 
dabei immer Dostojewskijs Roman. Damit schafft sich die Verfasserin ein 
komparatistisches Verfahren, das allen Literaturverfilmungen, die ein und 
denselben literarischen Text betreffen, zum Muster dienen sollte.  
Im Einzelnen sei Folgendes hervorgehoben. Der Erste Teil führt 
zunächst in vier Durchgängen ein in Dostojewskijs Idiot (1868/69), in 
Kurasawas Hakuchi (1951), in Gedeons Návrat idiota (1999) und in 
Wenders’ The Million Dollar Hotel (2000). Dostojewskijs Roman wird 
im Hinblick auf seine filmische Ergiebigkeit, auf seine zeitliche Struktur 
sowie auf seine Schauplätze betrachtet, und das in besonderer Zuspitzung 
auf die Titelfigur, den Fürsten Myškin, dessen Rückbindung an Christus 
und die Gestalt des Gottesnarren (russ. jurodivyj) in Orientierung an den 
Arbeiten von Konrad Onasch, Rudolf Neuhäuser, Eugen Drewermann, 
Maximilian Braun und Olga Meerson beschrieben wird. Die drei Film-
regisseure, ein Japaner, ein Tscheche und ein Deutscher, werden jeweils 
in dem für sie maßgebenden kulturellen Umfeld vorgestellt. 
Nachdem die Verfasserin auf diese Weise ihr Material präsentiert hat, 
liefert sie im anschließenden zweiten Kapitel des Ersten Teils einen 
historischen Abriss zum Forschungsgebiet der Intermedialität, wobei der 
Teilbereich „Literatur und Film“ mit seinen leitenden Problemstellungen 
in Russland, Deutschland, Frankreich, Italien und in der anglo-amerika-
nischen Filmwissenschaft nach vorn gerückt wird. Das Kapitel endet mit 
einer Systematisierung der „Adaptionsarten“, wobei die Verfasserin 
vermerkt, dass sie das Substantiv „Adaption“ als Synonym für „Literatur-
verfilmung“ verwendet (S. 113).

Im anschließenden Kapitel, dem letzten des Ersten Teils, werden die 
Kriterien für den Vergleich einer „Adaption“ mit der literarischen 
Vorlage aufgestellt. Es geht um die „narrativen Ebenen“, wie sie Roland 
Barthes in seiner Introduction à l’analyse structurale des récits gekenn-
zeichnet hat: um „Funktionen“, „Handlungen“ und „Narration“. Die 
Verfasserin stellt hier für die dann folgenden drei Kapitel des Zweiten 
Teils die Fragebögen bereit, mit denen die drei ausgewählten Adaptionen 
in jeweils anderer theoretischer Perspektive erfasst werden. 
Die drei Kapitel des Zweiten Teils sind das Ziel und Kernstück der 
Monographie (S. 131-291). Es folgen ein „Schlusswort“ sowie, neben den 
Bibliographien, sehr zu begrüßende Filmlisten, das Oeuvre Akira 
Kurosawas, Saša Gedeons und Wim Wenders’ betreffend, einschließlich 
einer „Chronologischen Liste der Verfilmungen von Dostojewskijs Der 
Idiot“ von 1910 bis 2007: mit siebzehn Titeln. 
Doch zurück zum Kernstück der dreifachen Analyse dreier Ver-
filmungen des Romans Der Idiot. Der erste Durchgang orientiert sich an 
René Girards Monographie über Dreiecksbeziehungen im Roman: Deceit, 
Desire, and the Novel, der zweite Durchgang an Michail Bachtins Über-
legungen zu Literatur und Karneval, der dritte Durchgang schließlich an 
der für Dostojewskijs Idiot charakteristischen Erzählperspektive, durch 
die der Fürst Myškin wie mit einer Kamera von außen erfasst wird, was 
den Roman zu einer „Phänomenologie der Verkennung“ werden lässt, 
herausgearbeitet von mir in meinem gleichnamigen Aufsatz in Dosto-
evsky Studies, New Series 3 (1999), S. 55-72. Die dreifache Fixierung von 
Roman und dreimaliger Verfilmung gibt der Verfasserin die Gelegenheit, 
immer wieder neue und überraschende Details am literarischen Text und 
seiner Umsetzung ins erzählende Bild hervortreten zu lassen, ein Inter-
pretationsverfahren, das Schule machen sollte. Kurzum: Wir haben es mit 
einer obligatorischen Lektüre für Filmwissenschaftler und Dostojewskij-
Interpreten zu tun.
