Enhancing Location-Based Social Media Network Services with Semantic Technologies: A Review
Today’s location-based social media services have gone beyond mere sharing users’real-time locationsvia internet, they now serve as the bridge between the real world and the online world. Location-based social media application can now recommend point of interest to users based on geographical information and user’s profile gatheredon social media networks. Semantic web technology provides tools,platforms and techniques to extract meaning, processand integrate structure datafrom the social web and other sources.The rapid increasein number of social media networks and theenormous amount of geographical and social data flow across mobile and web platforms, have not only provided rich data source for web applications but also help developers to facilitate location-based social media services. However, unprecedented amount of noise and unstructured data exist on these networks, making knowledge representation, point of interest recommendation and precision of search engine results cumbersome processes.In this paper, we presentreview of various semantic technologies that could bedeployed to enhance location-based social media services with emphasis on architectures, tools, supporting technologies and the pros and cons of each of these technologies
Variations of Density and Compressive Strength Before and After Charring of Some Selected Construction Timber Species of Southwestern Nigeria
This study aimed to evaluate the percentage variations of density and compressive strength of some selected timber species mostly used for constructional purposes in Southwestern Nigeria after undergoing fire exposure. The species are: Terminalia superba (Afara), Milicia excelsa (Iroko), Nauclea diderrichii (Opepe), Khaya ivorensis (Mahogany), Mansonia altissima (Mansonia), Tectona grandis (Teak).The densities and the compressive strengths of the species were determined at Moisture Contents (MC) of 9.0, 12.0, and 15.0%. Nine specimen per species, were exposed to fire at various temperature ranges.The results of analysis by variance revealed that at 9% MC, Mahogany had the lowest density value of 439±10.58Kg/m³. At 12 and 15% MC, Afara had the lowest density values of 444±4.18Kg/m³ and 469±7.07Kg/m³ respectively. At 9, 12 and 15% MC, Opepe had the highest density values of 630±28.85Kg/m³, 686±22.64Kg/m³ and 752±17.22Kg/m³ respectively. Afara of 9, 12 and 15% MC had the lowest compressive strength parallel to the grain values of 9.59±1.08N/mm2, 9.59±1.08N/mm2 and 8.13±1.01N/mm2 respectively, while Mahogany had the highest compressive strength parallel to the grain values of 16.57±0.50N/mm2, 15.17±0.49N/mm2 and 12.12±0.42N/mm2 at the three MC levels. Post fire exposure revealed that Afara had the highest percentage change in density and compression in parallel values, while both Iroko and Mahogany exhibited the lowest percentage change in density and compression in parallel values. This study indicated that Mahogany and Iroko species which had lowest post fire change in density and compression in parallel values are useful and recommended to ensure the safety in case of fire outbreaks
The Effect of Workers Health on Production in Some Selected Quarries in Southwestern Nigeria
The study examined the effect of workers' health on production in some selected quarries in Ondo State, Nigeria. It focuses at accessing the state of labour productivity in quarry operation, the current state of workers' health and identifying the health management facilities available at quarry sites of the study area. Five quarry firms were purposively selected for their high workers enrolment in Ondo State while 14 quarry workers were randomly selected from each quarry; thereby summing up to 70 respondents. Data was collected by means of structured questionnaire to provide information on respondents' personal information, quarry operational activities, availability of health facilities, frequency of clinic visit, and quarry tonnage turn over. Frequency and percentage frequency statistics were the main descriptive statistical tools utilized. While the inferential statistics used are independent sample T -test and Pearson correlation analysis. An analysis of the results established that the quarry workers were mostly males (88.6%) of average age between 20 to 25 years (40.0%); only 6% have a working experience of over 11 years; 32 % have the first degree, the rest have lower certificates; 63% were unmarried. About 80% of the respondents were provided with personal protective equipments and access to first aid facilities. 75.5% attested that quarry companies were working in alliance with health and safety standard (while workers are mostly on 2 shifts (62.9%) per day. About 13% attested that they have been to clinic twice at the year of this study. Prevalence of ailments among the quarry workers included: head ache (91.4%), malaria (90.0%), catarrh (91.4%), vibration effect (44.3%), dehydration (42.9%), snake and insect bites (31.4%), Silicosis (11.4%) and lung diseases (10%). Monthly tonnage of quarry related strongly (R=0.976) with workers’ population. However, current level of medical facilities had very low correlation with productivity (-0.256). It is recommended that the quarry companies invest in workers’ health services to care for health condition of workers, which in turn have a great and significant implication on daily productivity of each worker
An Analysis of Transient Stability Enhancement Capability of UPFC in a Multi-machine Power System
This study presents the transient stability enhancement capability of Unified power flow controller (UPFC) as an effective Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) device in a multi-machine power system. The test system was a reduced Nigerian 330kV power system and the focus was on the effect of disturbances on the largest generating unit (Egbin) in the system. The analysis was conducted by simulating a 3-phase fault at two locations; on the terminal of the largest generator unit at Egbin bus and the bus with the largest load at Ikeja–west. The response of the system in both cases was compared with and without the device in operation. Simulations were carried out using the Power System Simulation for Engineering (PSS/E) software. Results showed that, with the UPFC in the network, system transient stability was enhanced considering that critical clearing time of the system was increased from 380ms to 590ms when the fault was at Egbin generator terminal and from 470ms to 510ms following the fault at Ikeja-west. In addition, the device was able to damp power oscillations resulting from the disturbance created by the faults
Cybercrimes in Nigeria: Analysis, Detection and Prevention
Over the years, the alarming growth of the internet and its wide acceptance has led to increase in security threats. In Nigeria today, several internet assisted crimes known as cybercrimes are committed daily in various forms such as fraudulent electronic mails, pornography, identity theft, hacking, cyber harassment, spamming, Automated Teller Machine spoofing, piracy and phishing. Cybercrime is a threat against various institutions and people who are connected to the internet either through their computers or mobile technologies. The exponential increase of this crime in the society has become a strong issue that should not be overlooked. The impact of this kind of crime can be felt on the lives, economy and international reputation of a nation. Therefore, this paper focuses on the prominent cybercrimes carried out in the various sectorsin Nigeria and presents a brief analysis of cybercrimes in tertiary institutions in Ekiti-State. In conclusion, detection and prevention techniques are highlighted in order to combat cybercrimes in Nigeria
Estimation of Design Flood Hydrographs for Osun River at Iwo Control Station in Osun State, Nigeria
oai:journal.engineering.fuoye.edu.ng:article/13The unit and storm hydrographs for the catchment of Osun River at Iwo station Osun State, Nigeria were developed. Soil Conservation Service (SCS) and Snyder’s unit hydrograph methods were used to develop synthetic hydrographs for the catchment, while the SCS Curve Number method was used to estimate excess rainfall values from rainfall depth of different return periods. The peak storm flows obtained based on the unit hydrograph ordinates using convolution procedures determined by SCS for rainfall events of 10yr, 20yr, 50yr, 100yr and 200yr return periods for the catchment vary from 819.87 m3/s to 1681.34 m3/s, while those based on Snyder’s method for the catchment vary from 551.41m3/s to 1134.86 m3/s . The statistical analysis at 5% level of significance indicated that there were significant differences in the two methods. The analysis showed that the total peak flows for different return periods obtained from SCS method is higher than that of Snyder’s method by 33.16%. SCS method was recommended for use on the watershed since it incorporates most major hydrological and morphological characteristics of the basins like the watershed area, main channel length, river channel slope and watershed slope
Geotechnical Properties of Lateritic Soil Stabilized with Banana Leaves Ash
This paper investigated the geotechnical properties of lateritic soil with banana leaves ash. The natural soil sample was gotten from the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Nigeria, and were subjected to preliminary soil tests such as natural moisture content, specific gravity and atterberg limit at its natural state. Engineering tests such as compaction, california bearing ratio and unconfined compressive strength tests were also carried out on the lateritic soil at their natural states and at when the banana leaves ashes were added to the soil at varying proportions of 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10% by weight of soil. The result of the strength tests showed that the banana leaves ash enhanced the strength of the lateritic soil. The unsoaked CBR value of the soil at its natural state was 10.42 % and it got to optimum value of 28.10% by addition of 4% banana leaves ash by weight of soil. The unconfined compressive strength improved from 209.18 kN/m2 at natural state to 233.77 kN/m 2 at 4% banana leaves ashes. It was therefore concluded that the banana leaves ash satisfactorily act as cheap stabilizing agents for subgrade purposes
Development of Wood-Ash/Resin Polymer Matrix Composite for Body Armour Application
This research work formulated and developed a polymer matrix composite (PMC) for body armour application by adopting hand lay-up processing method in producing the epoxy resin-wood ash composite. The usual waste from wood after combustion, wood ash, was used as the additive in the development of the PMC. Chemical composition of the prepared wood ash was determined using X-ray florescence spectrometry. The mechanical properties of the developed PMC was evaluated and discovered to have been enhanced through the inclusion of the wood ash particles. 2.3% inclusion of wood ash resulted in the tensile strength value of 104 N/mm2against 86 N/mm2 for neat reinforced resin. The impact strength of the PMC increased from 50 J/mm2 (without wood ash) to 112 J/mm2 while 25.4 HRF was recorded for the hardness value of the PMC with wood ash against 23.4 HRF for the neat reinforced PMC. The microscopic analysis also revealed that the wood ash particles were uniformly distributed in the matrix without indication of segregation. When subjected to ballistic tests, the developed PMC successfully arrested the 9 x 19 mm ammunitions after perforating some layers of the sandwiched sample. Derivation of New Class of Orthogonal Polynomials with Recurrence Relation
This paper presents the derivation of a new class of orthogonal polynomials named ADEM-B orthogonal polynomials, valid in the interval [-1, 1] with respect to weight function. The analysis of some basic properties of the polynomials shows that the polynomials are symmetrical depending on whether index n in is even or odd. The recurrence relation of the class of the polynomials is presented and a brief review of the formulation of existing scheme is considered to test the applicability of the polynomials. Findings reveal that these polynomials produce the same results as in zeros of Chebyshev and Legendre polynomials
Effects of Thermal Treatment Processes (TTP) on the Tensile Properties of 0.165% Carbon Steel
In practice, welded low carbon steels do fail at the welded joints in use, thus leading to structural defects, material wastages, structural failure, and at times loss of lives, among others. This has been a great concern to practicing Engineers and Researchers. This study tends to proffer solution to this problem of concern through application of post welded thermal treatments. The welded samples were subjected to some post-weld thermal-treatment (TTP) operations such as normalizing, annealing and quench-hardening using different quenching media (Water, Palm oil, Quartz 5000 Total Engine oil, and Ground nut oil). The Tensile properties of the steel (such as tensile stress, tensile strain, and toughness) were determined before and after welding operations. At yield points, the thermal treatment processes adversely affected the strength of the welded steel. Meanwhile, normalizing and annealing processes enhanced the steel’s ductility and toughness, while quench-hardening process, irrespective of medium of quenching used reduced the steel toughness value. The toughness of the welded steel at the fracture point was also reduced through all the adopted thermal processes, except for normalizing process. The steel ultimate tensile stress and strain and its toughness values were equally reduced after TTP. Improvement of the properties of welded low carbon steel and the reduction of mechanical hazard were achieved through effective TTP. Thus, a better tensile property of welded low carbon steel was elicited by post-weld normalizing and annealing operations. Hence, butt-welded annealed and normalized low carbon steel specimens tend to be more resilient to failures at welded joints
