African American Women’s Experience With Invisibility and Hypervisibility in the Workplace: Does it Matter to Career Advancement?

    Get PDF
Black women continue to be underrepresented in senior leadership positions in the workplace although they are the most educated in the workplace. This study explores the lived experience of African American women who work for the federal sector and their career advancement into leadership and managerial positions. A qualitative method was used, and the participants consisted of Black women who worked for the federal sector who had either promoted to a leadership position within the last 3 to 5 years or aspired to be in a leadership position. Interviews were conducted via Zoom, and in vivo coding was used to analyze the data. The study revealed that Black women have benefited from being both hypervisible and invisible in the workplace to advance their careers in the federal sector. Regardless of if it was through diversity and inclusion initiatives or simply not bringing attention to oneself, there was a positive outcome for them. However, the study also revealed the disparate treatment of Black women who work for the federal sector and their experiences. This research sheds light on how African American women show up in the workplace and how maximizing their social identity or minimizing their social identity can affect their career trajectory. The findings of this study support existing research and could inform future studies to delve deeper into the psychological effects of identity shifting and what solutions companies can put in place to support authenticity and Black women who work for the federal sector. “It’s Literally Impossible to Be a Woman:” Female Depictions in the Films of Greta Gerwig

    Get PDF
With Lady Bird (2017), Little Women (2019), and Barbie (2023), Greta Gerwig made history as the first director to have her first three directorial feature films nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award. This trilogy of movies is extremely relevant since Barbie was the highest-grossing film of the 2023 box office. However, little scholarly analysis of Gerwig’s filmography exists. This project examines the particular depictions of female characters in these three films. In Gerwig’s corpus, women are not solely limited to the roles of innocent daughter, obedient wife, holy mother, or damaged prostitute; they can be presidents and painters, authors and astronauts, musicians and mothers. How does this uniquely multifaceted and compassionate portrayal of women in Gerwig’s movies stand out from contemporary filmmakers, and how might it impact the future of women on the screen? Through a qualitative analysis of the women in Gerwig’s films and their relationships with each other, this thesis elaborates on the distinctive connection between mothers and their teenage daughters, the necessary autonomy of women and their dreams, and the construction of female identity. How does Gerwig approach the impossibility of womanhood in her films

    Exploring Principal Turnover in Oklahoma

    Get PDF
Schools that maintain the same principal for 5 or more years report increased student achievement, increased teacher retention, and a positive school culture. The problem is that over 70% of principals will not remain in the same school for 5 years and the average principal turnover rate in the United States is 22%. The purpose of this quantitative study was to explore principal turnover in Oklahoma from 2011–2024 by answering the following research questions: What is the average principal turnover rate for principals in Oklahoma? Is there a significant difference in elementary and secondary principal turnover rates? Is there a difference in principal turnover rates before and after the COVID-19 pandemic? Are race, gender, salary, and experience predictors of principal turnover? This quantitative study used a combination of analyses including one-way ANOVA, Tukey posttest, chi-square test, and binary-logistic regression to analyze 13 years of historical data with a sample of over 1,700 school principals throughout Oklahoma. The results contribute to the overall literature on principal turnover in the following areas: (1) the principal turnover rate between 2011 and 2024 in Oklahoma is 21.6%, (2) there is a statistically significant difference in elementary and secondary principal turnover, (3) the COVID-19 pandemic did not have a significant impact on principal turnover, (4) salary and educational experience are predictors of principal turnover, and (5) race and gender are not accurate predictors of principal turnover. The results encourage district leaders in Oklahoma to consider exploring situational leadership theory when leading principals as school level, salary, total educational experience, and other contextual factors determine if the principal will remain at the school long enough to make a positive impact on student achievement, teacher retention, and school culture. Future research could focus on identifying specific reasons for principal v turnover, the type of experience, and adding variables such as school size and setting when considering predictive factors of principal turnover. Program Development for Enhancing Cognitive Performance Patterns for Adolescents through Horticultural Therapy

    Get PDF
This capstone specialization focuses on program development within the context of mental health, particularly targeting adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The project aims to implement a horticultural therapy program to enhance these adolescents’ behavioral and social skills. Despite the foundational emphasis on mental health within occupational therapy (OT), practitioners may encounter challenges in effectively managing mental health issues. This project explores horticultural therapy as a complementary approach to traditional OT practice, aiming to improve mental health outcomes. Future directions include further exploration of program development strategies and their impact on mental health outcomes within traditional settings

The Lived Experiences of Women in Construction: Career Supporting Strategies

    Get PDF
Women are underrepresented in the United States construction industry, representing only 11% of the workforce, and this lack of diversity in the male-dominated occupation results in barriers to female career advancement. The problem is that women in construction experience obstacles to career progression due to gender work life balance, sexual harassment, and pay inequality; barriers such as these keep women out of leadership roles. Three recommended techniques to support women’s career progression in construction and combat barriers to career advancement include social support, fighting back (openly challenging discrimination), and positive reappraisal (reframing negatives to positives). Understanding the effectiveness of these strategies is integral to supporting women’s careers in construction. The theoretical constructs for this study are glass ceiling theory, role congruence theory, social role theory, and backlash theory. The purpose of this narrative inquiry study was to explore the lived experiences of women in construction employed in Texas as it relates to using three career supporting strategies to combat gender bias: social support, fighting back, and positive reappraisal. Using a qualitative approach, the researcher utilized semistructured interviews to analyze the experiences of participants. The results of this study revealed two themes regarding social support—social support and gender dynamics—and two themes regarding fighting back—conflict resolution and emotional labor. In addition, two themes regarding positive reappraisal were revealed—adaptability and career progression. The participants in this study used mechanisms to persevere, solve problems, and advance their careers in the construction industry. The findings of this study contribute significantly to understanding of the experiences and challenges faced by women in construction. By illuminating the unique dynamics of their professional environment, this research equips both iii scholars and practitioners with evidence-based insights that can inform the development of support systems. Keywords: narrative inquiry, women in construction, social support, fighting back, positive reappraisal, career support

Implementing Bedside Shift Report in the Home Health Care Pediatric Setting

    Get PDF
Developing and maintaining good communication is central in nursing because the goal is to achieve the best outcomes for the patient. In the past, written handover reports have been the standard way nurses communicate with each other, especially in the hospital and in home-based practice. Despite this rationale, this approach has considerable weaknesses: its high risk of mistakes and misunderstanding could negatively influence patient outcomes. In light of these concerns, this project examines the role of bedside shift reports in pediatric home care and the patient readmission rate. This project employed a quantitative, cross-sectional research approach involving 32 pediatric home health nurses across 8 weeks of trial. Such data were obtained using an online tool called SurveyMonkey, and the changes to the patient readmission rate were compared using IntellectusStatisticsTM with paired t tests. The study results presented a statistically significant reduction in readmissions; the number of cases reduced from seven in the preimplementation phase to four in the postimplementation period (p = .02; 57.14%). These findings show that bedside shift reports can go a long way in enhancing nurse communication and improving patient outcomes by decreasing the rate of readmissions. Implementing bedside shift reports was time-consuming, as it involved educating the staff about the new practice; however, the advantages of improving patient care and staff collaboration make the difficulties worthwhile. The results support the current literature and confirm the benefits of bedside shift reports as an innovative model for decreasing adverse patient outcomes and enhancing the quality of care in pediatric home health. There is more to be discovered on how these could be implemented and their effects in different health care settings.
