Shame, Guilt, and Behavioral Responses to Conflict in Organizational Life: A Correlational Study
This study investigated the relationship between self-conscious emotions, namely shame and guilt, and constructive and destructive behavioral responses to conflict among working adults in the United States. Researchers have underscored the importance of task-focused conflict and adaptive leadership in fostering positive conflict outcomes. However, the connection between shame and guilt and behavioral responses has yet to be explored. Drawing upon the Conflict Dynamics Profile and the Test of Self-Conscious Affect-3, this correlational study examined the associations between shame and guilt and 15 distinct behavioral responses to conflict among a sample of 203 participants, mostly women employed full-time. The cross-sectional survey methodology revealed significant correlations between shame and destructive behaviors, including self-criticism and avoiding tactics. At the same time, guilt was positively associated with constructive behaviors such as reaching out to the other person, creating solutions with the other person, and taking the other person’s perspective. These findings contribute to a nuanced understanding of how self-conscious emotions shape conflict dynamics in organizational settings. However, limitations regarding generalizability and self-report measures warrant consideration. Future research should consider how intersectionality contributes to organizational conflict theories and how psychological safety correlates with destructive and constructive behavioral responses to conflict
The Conundrum of Buy-In for the Texas Teacher Incentive Allotment
The purpose of this study was to gather teacher perceptions of the Texas Teacher Incentive Allotment (TIA) within a rural school district and provide information to stakeholders and administrators so that they may understand the buy-in of elementary, junior high, and high school teachers. Previous studies showed discrepancies in the extent to which elementary, junior high, and high school teachers accepted and were willing to support and participate in pay-for- performance initiatives; therefore, this case study provided data on the amount of support various levels of educators have in their local TIA program and their perceptions of their local policy for TIA. Through interviews with 10 participants, multiple themes emerged from the data. The researcher used member checking and peer debriefing to establish the accuracy of the transcripts and credibility. After the constant comparative method was used to determine what themes emerged, the study was compared with Lee et al.’s (2021) study on the same incentive program. An alignment was found that suggested lower-level teachers have a greater buy-in of the TIA program than their high school educator peers. Discussions of each theme related to the four research questions are presented. The motivation crowding theory was used to make sense of the data. Then, the perceptions and buy-in of the educators were used to give information to stakeholders and administrators to maximize the quality of implementation for their local TIA program
Transgender Education in School Nursing to Decrease Stigma and Promote Self-Efficacy
This Doctor of Nursing Practice project evaluated whether transgender education provided to school nurses and healthcare technicians decreased stigma and promoted self-efficacy. Concerns that transgender individuals have voiced were that they felt healthcare professionals could not effectively care for transgender patients, which may be due to personal or religious beliefs or lack of knowledge concerning the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer community. Participants included credentialed school nurses and healthcare technicians in secondary education settings. The method consisted of a presurvey, education in the form of a handout, followed by a postsurvey to determine if education was successful. The Wilcoxon signed-rank test showed nonsignificant differences between presurvey and postsurvey responses, meaning that there were no changes in any of the questions concerning respondents’ attitudes, as evidenced by the comparison between the presurvey and postsurvey means. There was no perceivable shift in attitudes or opinions shown between the two surveys. This supports the null hypothesis, which was that there would be no statistical change in the school nurses’ and healthcare technicians’ self-efficacy as it related to the methods to manage the care of transgender individuals without bias/decreased stigma once education was provided. However, based on the feedback received from the school nurses and healthcare technicians, they appreciated the education, and they felt the study provided an opportunity to improve school nurses’ and healthcare technicians’ knowledge and attitudes about caring for transgender students, leading to self-efficacy without bias
Biogeography of Mentzelia thompsonii and related species (Loasaceae).
Mentzelia thompsonii is the only species in Mentzelia section Trachyphytum endemic to the Colorado Plateau and one of only a few that do not occur in California. In order to investigate the geographic origins, ecological function, and evolutionary potential of M. thompsonii and related species, we combine evidence from DNA, soil chemistry, and environmental niche modeling in a phylogenetic context. Based on ndhF–rpl32 cpDNA sequences from 185 specimens of M. thompsonii and 42 specimens representing the remaining 21 species in section Trachyphytum, we found that M. thompsonii is monophyletic and phylogenetically isolated from other species in Trachyphytum, suggesting that it is a paleoendemic. In contrast, the South American species, M. solierii, was placed sister to a haplotype from M. packardiae, representing the first published phylogenetic investigation of M. solierii. Soil analyses from all North American species in section Trachyphytum show that the edaphic niche of M. thompsonii is significantly different, and niche modeling with MaxEnt found that the distribution of Mancos Shale outcrops was five times more important than the most important climate variable for predicting the distribution of M. thompsonii. Surprisingly, subrange haplotype diversity in M. thompsonii did not match niche projections of climatic refugia during the last glacial maximum. Instead, diversity was lowest in the southernmost subrange and highest in the northernmost subrange of M. thompsonii. However, haplotype diversity was congruent with the projected distribution of M. thompsonii in 2081–2100, suggesting that genetic diversity in M. thompsonii has been shaped more by rapid warming and drought during interglacial periods than by the gradual cooling leading into glacial periods
