Power Converters and Control for Grid Connected Microgrids under Unbalanced Operating Conditions

    No full text
Nowadays, Renewable Energy Sources (RESs) have become more attractive and affordable due to recent advances in power electronic devices and control systems. Micro-Grids (MGs) represent a new paradigm of electrical grids with Distributed Generation (DG) units: they are generally composed of power converters, RESs, Energy Storage Systems (ESSs), local loads with measurement and control systems. MGs have the potential to operate in both, grid connected and islanded mode. During islanded mode, ESSs are essential for MGs to enable grid forming control. On the other hand, during grid connected mode, the ESSs allow the MGs to provide different services to the main grid. For example, grid power supporting during peak periods; however, in case of unbalanced operational conditions for MGs, due to single phase loads and single phase generation units, the power exchange between MGs and the main grid will add negative effects to the main grid. Since the MG is supposed to be grid friendly when connected to the external grid, the unbalanced currents should preferably be handled within the MG. Therefore, the power converters of MGs have to provide the zero sequence and negative sequence currents. The main objective of this thesis is to obtain grid friendly MGs, in order to improve the functionality of MGs during the grid connected mode, under unbalanced operating conditions. Power converters with ESSs can be adopted to mitigate the negative effects of unbalanced grid connected MGs. However, suitable control strategies are required. In this thesis, a control strategy based on vector control and symmetrical components is proposed for three-phase four-legs power converter interfaces Energy Storage Batteries (ESBs) to obtain a Multi-Functional Power converter (MFPC), in order to resolve the problems of the unbalanced three phase currents, and to the reactive power compensation. Several working conditions have been analyzed, and solutions for some common and frequent critical conditions, such as the imbalance of the power system due to single-phase loads and single phase DGs have been presented. Discussions of technical issues like output filter design and four legs VSIs modulation techniques, synchronization, power converters topologies and control have also been discussed. The proposed control strategy of MFPC is able to mitigate the negative effects of grid connected MGs such as, unbalanced and reactive power compensation. This allows the MGs to become grid friendly , even it is working under highly unbalanced and poor power factor conditions, and also performs power management to optimize the MGs supporting services with smart grid functionality

Metrics of food security and sustainability An indicator-based vulnerability and resilience approach

    No full text
Food crises and global climate change, along with natural system depletion, placed food security and environmental sustainability at the top of the political agenda. Analyses of the dynamic interlinkages between food consumption patterns and environmental concerns recently received considerable attention from the international community. Using the lens of a broad sustainability approach and recognizing the systemic dimension of sustainability - as the capacity of a system to maintain its functions over time - the thesis aimed at developing a multidimensional framework, to identify metrics for assessing the sustainability of food systems and diets, applicable at a subregional level. Building on Social-Ecological Systems frameworks, the Mediterranean Latin Arc presents several socioeconomic and biophysical drivers of change making the food system vulnerable in its functions. A vulnerability/resilience approach was applied to analyze the main issues related to food and nutrition security. Formalizing the food system as a dynamic complex system, a model originates from this framework. Several causal models of vulnerability were identified, describing the interactions where drivers of change directly affect food and nutrition security outcomes, disentangling exposure, sensitivity, and resilience. This theoretical modeling exercise allowed the identification of a first suite of indicators. A reduced pool of metrics was then obtained through an expert-based elicitation process (Delphi Survey), moving beyond subjective evaluation and reaching consensus

Authenticating Computation on Groups: New Homomorphic Primitives and Applications

    No full text
In this thesis we introduce new primitives to authenticate computation on data expressed as elements in (cryptographic) groups. As for the case of homomorphic authenticators, our primitives allow to verify the correctness of the computation {\em without} having to know of the original data set. More precisely, our contributions are two-fold. First, we introduce the notion of {\em linearly homomorphic authenticated encryption with public verifiability} and show how to instantiate this primitive (in the random oracle model) to support Paillier's ciphertexts. This immediately yields a very simple and efficient (publicly) verifiable computation mechanism for encrypted (outsourced) data based on Paillier's cryptosystem. As a second result, we show how to construct linearly homomorphic signature schemes to sign elements in bilinear groups (LHSG for short). Such type of signatures are very similar to (linearly homomorphic) structure preserving ones, but they allow for more flexibility, as the signature is explicitly allowed to contain components which {\em are not} group elements. In this sense our contributions are as follows. First we show a very simple construction of LHSG that is secure against weak random message attack (RMA). Next we give evidence that RMA secure LHSG are interesting on %in \note{(on?)} their own right by showing applications in the context of on-line/off-line homomorphic and network coding signatures. This notably provides what seems to be the first instantiations of homomorphic signatures achieving on-line/off-line efficiency trade-offs. Finally, we present a generic transform that converts RMA-secure LHSG into ones that achieve full security guarantees

Phosphorylated EGFR in EGFR mutation-negative lung cancer stem cells predicts Erlotinib sensitivity. A potential alternative therapeutic option for a subgroup of NSCLC patients

    No full text

Particle scintillating trackers: design and read-out of real-time, large-area, highly segmented detectors

    No full text
This thesis aims to show as technological advances and suitable technical solutions can make scintillation detectors for charged particles applicable in two research areas completely different, but both of great interest for improving the quality of human life: medical diagnostics, in particular before or during a hadrontherapy treatment and muon tomography applied to cargo containers for the identification and localization of potential radioactive, high-Z substances that are illegally transported. The structure of this thesis is illustrated with the description, the characterization and the possible applications of large-area, highly segmented trackers, made of scintillating materials. The OFFSET Research Project aims to realize a detector made of water equivalent material for the real-time imaging and tracking of charged particles to be applied in medical diagnostic. The first prototype of the OFFSET tracker was designed with a single X-Y position plane having a sensitive area 20x20 cm^2. It has the great advantage of a read-out channel reduction system applied to a large-area detector with a high spatial resolution, employing 500 micron Sci-Fis and an appropriate functional architecture. Subsequently a new version of the detector, the OFFSET3 tracker, having two X-Y position planes was constructed in order to reduce the overall size and to improve imaging performances being able to acquire charged particles tracks and by extending the field of view to 28.8x28.8 cm^2. OFFSET3 has the additional advantage of using the reduction channel technique combined with the Time Over Threshold analysis to reduce the number of read-out channels and the ribbons to be employed for the X-Y planes. The tracker has about 1 ns time resolution, it is water equivalent and has about 5 MHz maximum acquisition rate. Both detectors were tested with cosmic rays, beta sources, 62 MeV proton beam at the LNS-INFN. In addition, the OFFSET3 tracker was tested with 226 MeV proton beams and 400 MeV/A carbon beams at the CNAO hadrontherapy center, in Pavia. Complete characterizations were carried out and the results were presented. The use of Silicon photomultiplier replacing a multi-anode Position Sensitive Photo-Multiplier (PSPM) array coupled to the fibers is also under consideration. The technological know-how acquired with the design, construction and characterization of the OFFSET3 detector has been of great assistance for the construction of the Muon Portal detector (PORTAL) for the containers inspection. PORTAL consists of eight 3x6 m^2 layers corresponding to two X-Y trackers separated by 280 cm. In each layer there are six 1x3 m^2 identical modules, made of one hundred scintillating strips (10x10x3002 mm^3) coated with reflective film. The detection principle is based on the determination of the scattering angle of each muon from cosmic ray radiation as a result of crossing a high-Z material (both nuclear material and high-Z shielding materials). Indeed, the angular deflection of the trajectory is very sensitive to the Z of the atomic nuclei. The scattering angle can be reconstructed by the incoming and outgoing tracks with respect to the scanned object. Comparing the inspection techniques exploiting other particle sources to muon tomography, the last presents some advantages. For example the scan is not invasive and the acquisition time required is of a few minutes for a complete 3D tomography. The second part of this thesis reports the results of work on the PORTAL detector to define the technical details and choices connected with the construction phase. Preliminary test results on different strips of a module are ready and additional tests on modules are in progress. The first layer was already placed on the custom-designed mechanical support (an iron steel 6x3x7 m^3 framework). In total, 20 modules were already assembled. The final large-scale prototype will be ready around mid-2015 and it will be used to inspect containers transiting in ports

Experimental analysis and physical - mathematical modeling for the assessment of the thermal performance of buildings based on the harmonic analysis

    No full text
Because of the increasing uncertainty on the energy scene, the energy saving issue becomes really important in all those countries which are not able to produce energy on their own. In recent years, a significant effort in the direction of energy efficient buildings has been promoted by governments and scientific communities, who are discussing strategies to implement energy regulations and reduce building energy consumption. The energy performance concerns the amount of energy consumed or estimated to satisfy all the needs of the building. As a consequence, extensive research activities, both at national and international levels, have been carried out to create a general framework for a calculation methodology of the building energy performance. Many problems have arisen, concerning the definition of energy rating, the accuracy of the calculation methodology and the discrepancies between an application to new or to existing buildings. In this work we have chosen to investigate and further develop the potentialities offered by Harmonic Analysis though an extension of the Admittance method. Applied to energy saving studies for buildings, the traditional method (the Admittance method proposed by the standard UNI EN ISO 13786) offers the possibility of characterizing different building components through synthetic parameters of clear physical meaning and minor computational effort. Our work aims at enhancing the traditional method proposing a complete mathematical calculation method for the building energy evaluation. The proposed method could serve as a sort of link between the need for simplification by the technicians (supported and endorsed by national legislation and the EU and by many international standards)

Sustainable approaches to control Calonectria diseases in ornamental nursery

    No full text
Calonectria species are important plant pathogens in ornamental plant nurseries. The chemical control of Calonectria diseases is necessary, but alternative management strategies would be re-evaluated to comply with the latest European Regulations on the Sustainable Use of Pesticides (Directive 2009/128/EC). Several experiments were carried out to develop integrated pest management (IPM) programs for controlling of leaf spot, stem rot and crown and root rot caused by several Calonectria species on several ornalmental plants. In vitro preliminary assays showed a variable antagonistic activity of some Trichoderma spp., Clonostachys rosea and Penicillium oxalicum. In vivo experiments showed that a good control of Calonectria diseases is achieved by applying boscalid+pyraclostrobin or cyprodinil+fludioxonil in combinations with different BCAs belonging to the genus Bacillus, Trichoderma and Streptomyces. All biological and integrated treatments were able to manage stem rot on Dodonaea viscosa, crown and root rot on Polygala myrtifolia and leaf spot on Metrosideros spp. and Callistemon spp. Since Calonectria species are soil-borne pathogens producing microsclerotia (that represent the primary inoculum) in the soil, the reduction or suppression of this inoculum is an important task of management of this pathogen. The first set of experiments of this PhD thesis on soil fumigation with metham-sodium and dazomet show clearly excellent performances in reducing Calonectria microsclerotia viability both in microcosm and in nursery when applied at label and sub-label rats. Moreover, in accordance with the Directive 2009/128/EC on the Sustainable Use of Pesticides , in these experiment these fumigants were applied at rates lower and lower and in association with gas-tight tarps, such as VIF and TIF. The data showed that in these conditions both fumigants were able to reduce Calonectria microsclerotia, with a consequent reduction of amount of fumigants (up to 5-fold reduced). In addition, the use of TIF barrier offered a better retain capacity of fumigant than VIF, with a lower emission of pollutant molecules to the atmosphere and a lower impact in rhizosphere
