Evolutionary Dynamics of Social Behaviours on Multilayer Networks
Nature shows as human beings live and grow inside social structures. This assumption allows explaining and exploring how it may shape most of our behaviours and choices, and why we are not just blindly driven by instincts: our decisions are based on more complex cognitive reasons, based on our connectedness on di erent spaces. Thus, human cooperation emerges from this complex nature of social network. One of the main aims of my Ph.D.
dissertation is to explore how and why it happens, hence the work is mainly focused on studying the evolutionary dynamics of cooperation and social behaviours on a multilayer social network. Following a Bio-inspired approach, the social network analysis methodologies, and exploiting the mathematical framework of Evolutionary Game Theory (EGT), the target is to unveil the hidden dynamics, observe non-trivial patterns, nding out the hidden
emergent behaviours in a population. The study of cooperation and its evolutionary
dynamics on a social network, has raised up the need of a model able to explain the actual complexity of real-world networks, where individuals are connected through multiple types of relationships. For this reason, the mathematical framework of multilayer networks has been exploited, indeed it allows us to encompass these several interactions and relationships, exploring and unveiling how the di erent ties in the various layers can impact
on the emergence of social behaviours in a population. Therefore, the presence of the same nodes in multiple layers of a system, known as multiplexity, is the key to understand emergent phenomena, adding an extra dimension of analysis which explains what is the role not only of the intralayer interactions, as in a single-layer framework, but also of interlayer
interactions for the emergence of these phenomena. Furthermore, it is explored and quanti ed the role of some shaping factors, such as homophily, in this evolutionary process. Taking into account all these aspects, a novel analytical model is proposed, together with a simulative investigation of the evolution of human cooperation using mutliplex evolutionary game theory, shedding light on the key role played by homophily and multiplexity in the
evolution of cooperation. (continue in Ph. D. dissertation
Molecular characterization of Rhizoctonia spp. isolates and sustainable approaches to control Rhizoctonia diseases in ornamental nursery
Eighty-eight Rhizoctonia isolates were recovered from 30 ornamental species grown in nurseries in Sicily and their anastomosis group (AG) and subgroups were determined. Fifty-six isolates belong to binucleate Rhizoctonia BNR and 32 were multinucleate and identified as R. solani. The binucleate AG most frequently found in this survey was AG-R which has not been reported until now in Italy. Overall, disease data surveys correspond to the first reports of diseases caused by binucleate Rhizoctonia AG-A, AG-G, and R. solani AG-4 on Citrus volkameriana, Citrus sinensis × Poncirus trifoliata (Citrange), Trachycarpus fortunei, Arbutus unedo, Thevetia peruviana Bignonia sp., Carissa spp., Catharanthus roseus, Eugenia sp., Quercus ilex, Phyllirea angustifolia and Pittosporum tobira.
The high frequency and disease incidence detected through surveys in ornamental nurseries located in Sicily clearly show as this fungus represents a serious threat for ornamental plant production. Based on these considerations, the research topics of this PhD thesis was focused to develop an effective integrated control program in controlling both Rhizoctonia infections in nursery and in suppressing and/or strongly reducing of resting structures (sclerotia) into soil.
Therefore, following an in vitro screening of some BCAs effective against R. solani (AG-4 group) and Rhizoctonia BNR (AG-A, AG-G and AG-F groups), the consequent step was the efficacy evaluation of 6 commercial fungicides and 8 microbiological formulates under controlled environment (microcosms) for the control of Rhizoctonia crown and root rot. To this aim, a plant host-pathogen model was successfully set up by using Dodonea viscosa. Overall, these data clearly indicate that only tolclofos-methyl can be employed for chemical management of Rhizoctonia infections, although encouraging results were found for other fungicides. Regarding the valid measures to suppress pathogen inoculum, the efficacy of some fumigants was tested at label and sub label rates in 5 nursery experiments under different applicative conditions. Interesting data in suppressing Rhizoctonia survival were obtained even though in plots fumigated with low rates (up to 5-fold reduced) of dazomet and metham sodium, whereas viable Trichoderma colonies were almost always retrieved. However, TIF barrier has averagely enhanced retention fumigants capacity if compared to VIF, thus significantly increasing their efficacy in suppressing fungal inocula and viability of Trichoderma spp. Further experiments, performed to evaluate efficacy of a new fumigant (DMDS) in controlling Rhizoctonia inocula in cultivation substrates, clearly show as it could be supported as a valid alternative to standard fumigants, although it was actually registered against Meloydogine spp., Heterodera spp., Globodera spp and Pratylenchus spp. nematodes. Comprehensively, the present PhD thesis provides useful information about diffusion and control of Rhizoctonia disease on ornamental nurseries
Advanced modeling techniques for electroactive polymers transducers
This dissertation deals with the modeling of electroactive polymers. More specifically IPMCs and IP2Cs, which are electroactive polymers that can be used both as sensors and as actuators, have been considered.
The modeling of IPMC and IP2C transducers, in fact, is an open issue relevant to the development of effective applications. An introductions to the general framework of the proposed models of Electroactive polymers will be given in Section 1, while, in Sections 2 and 3, a multiphysics model of actuators is presented in details. It integrates the description of the electrical, mechanical, chemical and thermal coupled physics domains in a unique solution. As a novel contribution, a model optimization procedure which integrates Nelder-Mead simplex method with the multiphysics model is exploited to identify model parameters by fitting experimental data. A further nonlinear neural network model of IP2C actuators has been implemented and the results will be described in Section 4. The proposed model takes into account the humidity dependence of the device as a modifying input. Three different Neural Network models, e.g. Feed-forward neural network, Radial-basis neural network and recurrent neural network are developed and a comparison of proposed model have been reported
Analysis of miRNome expression profile in hippocampus of rats treated with antidepressants
MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small, non-coding RNAs with a key role in regulating gene expression at post-transcriptional level. Recent investigations suggested that dysregulation in miRNA expression may be critical for mental disorders pathophysiology, including mood disorders, and in psychotropic drugs action, such as mood stabilizers and antidepressants (ADs). Aim of the studies presented was to analyze whether modulation of hippocampal miRNome could be part of the mode of action of different ADs, fluoxetine, desipramine and agomelatine. Moreover, in order to assess the time course of ADs effects, treatments were performed for various time lengths (3,7 or 21 days). Rat hippocampal miRNome expression was investigated by means of TaqMan Rodent MicroRNA Arrays. We found that all ADs induced a significant modulation of hippocampal miRNome, although with different time-dependent effects. Indeed, all ADs significant modulated miRNA expression already after 3 days of treatment with the most pronounced effect by agomelatine (37 miRNAs, mainly down-regulated); whereas both fluoxetine and desipramine modified the expression of 8 different miRNAs. After 7 days, the greater number of miRNAs was modulated by fluoxetine (35 miRNAs, mainly up-regulated), while desipramine and agomelatine modulated the expression of 13 and 22 miRNAs, respectively. Finally, 21 days of agomelatine treatment modulated the expression of 6 miRNAs. Interestingly, some of the miRNAs were found to be similarly affected by at least two of the different ADs. A bio-informatic analysis allowed the identification of putative miRNA targets and signalling pathways modulated by the identified miRNAs. The predicted target genes of miRNAs are involved in several pathways related to neuronal functions and ADs mechanism of action; moreover, many of the putative target genes, in particular those of miRs modulated by agomelatine, are enriched in pathways related to DNA/RNA regulation and epigenetic mechanisms. A number of putative miRNA target genes have been selected for validation studies by means of mRNA/protein expression analyses. The results of these work, showing that AD treatments induce early and time-dependent modifications in the expression of hippocampal miRNAs, could be of help to better clarify the ADs mechanism of action and to identify new putative targets for the development of novel drugs with greater efficacy and a more rapid onset of action

Oxidative stress and anti-oxidant response in allergen, virus, and corticosteroids withdrawal-induced asthma exacerbation.
Structural and optical properties of complex-morphology materials based on metal nanostructures
Starting from an overview of the basic concepts on the correlation between structural and optical parameters of plasmonic nanostructures, this work presents the results of the synthesis processes and structural, optical and electrical characterizations of metal-based complex morphology and composition nano-composite materials (such as Au Dendrites, SiO2 Nanowires-Au Nanoparticles pea-podded composites, glass/textured_FTO/Au NPs multilayer). The aim is to assess the state of the art and, then, show the innovative contributions that can be proposed in this research field. Opportune methodologies, based on self-organization, have been developed for the production of such materials. Several microscopic techniques have been used to analyze the structural properties of the synthesized materials (i.e. RBS, SEM, AFM, TEM, EDX, EELS), and macroscopic measurements have been used to probe their electrical and optical properties. To understand the growth dynamic and the evolution of these complex systems, the correlation between structural and optical parameters has been established, and phenomenological growth models have been drafted.
The entire work has been focused on the research of innovative, versatile and low-cost synthesis techniques, suitable to provide a good control on the size, surface density and geometry of the complex nanostructures. Such optimization of the structural parameters is necessary to modulate the metallic nanostructures optical and electrical properties for each specific application. Therefore, the aim of this study is the fabrication of functional nano-scale-size materials, whose properties can be tailored, in a wide range, simply by controlling the structural characteristics. Optimized optical and electrical properties are required to improve the performance of new photovoltaic devices, biosensors, nano-scale optical devices, sensors and SERS active-substrates
