Anything can happen in the Zone: Library and Departmental Change Driven by Migration to a Cloud-based Library Management System

    No full text
Butler University Libraries had already made progressive changes in public services areas, but Technical Services remained unchanged and bound to legacy practices from decades past. For us, the best catalyst for change was a system migration to a cloud-based type of management system. This system migration was tied to organizational restructuring and a new strategic plan, each of which intertwined with the details of the migration project and was underpinned by thoughtful analysis of how to help employees through change. Details of the migration are discussed in relation to how they inspired departmental and organizational change through updated technology

Managing an Information Literacy Needs Assessment Over Multiple Campuses

    No full text
The South University Libraries last performed a major assessment for information literacy instruction when creating an information literacy strategic plan in 2011. Since that time, changes in staffing, practices, and academic goals; coupled with low student performance in the annual Standardized Assessment of Information Literacy Skills (SAILS) tests, prompted the university librarians to initiate a needs assessment project to re-evaluate the libraries’ information literacy instruction plan. The steps and results of that project are discussed in relation to how they helped the libraries create an adaptable information literacy plan for multiple campuses spread across the United States

Using Impact as a Strategic Tool for Developing the Digital Library via the Balanced Value Impact Model

    No full text
This paper will demonstrate how to effectively measure the impact of a digital library and how this can enhance strategic planning. Measuring the impact of digital resources and how they affect the various benefitting communities improves evidence-based decision making. This paper will discuss how the recently developed Balanced Value Impact Model measures a digital resource by balancing both internal organizational and external community perspectives with social and economic considerations. This will be illustrated with research case studies from the Wellcome Library digitization programme and Europeana Impact Taskforce. The paper will further suggest means by which thinking about the value chain from activity, through output, to outcomes and impact can enhance strategic planning for digital libraries

Are Disaster and Emergency Plans Truly Complete?

    No full text
The purpose of this paper is to provide guidance or template to libraries and also other different types of institutions as to how they can complete, update or write their disaster and emergency manuals to include a section which specifically addresses roles, duties and responsibilities (RDRs). This research shares valuable information as writing RDRs can be challenging and time consuming. The findings indicate that most disaster and emergency manuals are incomplete if RDRs are not included and this was evident from the vast number of documents and literature reviewed. Success in any attempt to have a complete disaster and emergency management process would require a section that focuses specifically on RDRs as this allows for better preparedness, training and continuity planning. This paper provides practical guidance as it is relevant when completing, updating or writing disaster and emergency manuals irrespective of the type of institution. This paper contains new/additional information from a number of sources into one about the RDRs for members of a disaster committee in varying institutions
