2023 National Association of Extension 4-H Youth Development Professionals Conference Report
Pittsburg, Pennsylvania was the host site of the 2023 National Association of Extension 4-H Youth Development Professionals (NAE4-HYDP) Conference. The event was held October 9th through the 13th and was the seventy-seventh gathering of this annual conference. This year’s conference theme Building Foundations Stronger than Steel focused on strengthening the 4-H organization by creating robust programs, projects, and activities for the youth that we serve. The conference hosts integrated Pennsylvania’s history of steel production and industry to relate the conference theme to the work being done in 4-H.
The purpose of the NAE4-HYDP Conference is to provide an opportunity for 4-H professionals across the country to come together and share their experiences, successes, and insights. Just over 1,000 4-H professionals and partner agencies participated in this year’s event. The conference activities fall within one of five overall categories. General sessions offer a time for all attendees to gather to discuss business and hear from inspiring youth and professionals during the Keynote and Plenary addresses. The bulk of the conference is comprised of workshops where ideas and learning are shared with fellow professionals. Working group sessions and networking times allow for more in-depth involvement and engagement. The final conference category is awards and recognition

Forbidden Forests: Negotiating Censorship in Children\u27s and Young Adult Literature During a New Era of Conservatism in 2022 and Beyond
Harambee! In Swahili, “Harambee” means “All pull together!” The impetus for this report grew out of a unifying discussion with other 2022 Children\u27s Literature Association (ChLA) conference attendees. These discussions led to the decision to “pull together” against the rise of “extreme” conservatism and the increase of banned books across the United States.
This report offers insight into some of the issues surrounding the increase in censorship in children\u27s and young adult literature. It includes a brief review of the recently scrutinized book, Dear Martin by Nic Stone, and it concludes with some recommendations for negotiating censorship in conservative communities

2022 AAEA Annual Meeting
Using a discrete choice experiment, our study investigates consumer preferences for different levels of pesticide use in organic, integrated pest management, and Conventional production methods. An online survey of fresh tomato purchases was conducted in Missouri in the fall of 2021. Fresh tomatoes were selected because tomatoes grown using various production methods are currently being sold at farm stands, farmers\u27 markets, supermarkets, natural stores, or even online in Missouri. Tomatoes are listed in the Dirty Dozen because of threats of pesticide residue from insecticides, fungicides, and herbicides (The Environmental Working Group, 2020). We estimated WTP for one pound of tomatoes, differentiated by varying degrees of pesticide use and other attributes discussed below. The study contributes to the scarce literature on demand for sustainable production method attributes such as IPM. The WTP measures estimated in the paper also provide insight into the perceived trade-offs among product attributes. Because individual WTP values are calculated, this information can also be used to examine the characteristics of consumers interested in lower pesticide us
The Importance of Experiential Learning in Agriculture Literacy Opportunities
Learning Preferences (LP) are considered stable indicators of how students and adults respond to factors of learning in an environment. The environment is interactive with cognitive thought, critical and creative thinking, emotional, physical, and social learning processes. Research farms remain popular for academic and extension faculty use because of the opportunity to share rich experiential teaching opportunities for all ages. Agriculture\u27s connection to human health and environmental quality, and the societal lack of understanding agriculture literacy, exposes the need for enhanced agricultural education efforts. Lincoln University at Jefferson City, Missouri introduced thirty-five (35) incoming agriculture majors, with varying levels of prior knowledge to agriculture, by using experiential methodology. A blind pre- and post-event survey was performed that contained twenty-one (21) prompts using a 5-point Likert scale, regarding introduced topics and disciplines for the day. A paired t-test with probability correction for multiple t-tests was used to analyze the data set. Exposing incoming freshmen to Agriculture Literacy, by using hands-on learning and visual experiences, increased student understanding of agriculture disciplines in Poultry Science, Animal Welfare, Aquaculture, Plants and Soil Science, Environmental Sciences and Geospatial Information Systems (GIS). Additional questions on the post-event survey asked participants to share their favorite activities of the day. The top three activities were all fully involved hands-on activities of the day. These included sorting and weighing sheep, catching chickens, candling eggs, and preparing and testing soil samples. The least favorite activities included more watching and listening which included less hands-on training
Missouri ALOT - DC Experience
I want to thank Lincoln University for sponsoring this trip. I had access to many high-level people in DC that wanted to hear my story of agriculture.
