of 423-Colton Hall when developed early in the semester.  The tutoring schedule

Prerequisite  Phys 111 and Math 112, For chemical engineering and electrical engineering 
majors. Statics provides an understanding of the equilibrium of particles and 
rigid bodies, including simple machines, trusses, and frictional forces. 
Mechanics of materials covers pressure vessels, thermal stresses, torsion of 
shafts, stresses and deflection in beams, and column action.  
  
    
Course Format: Modular Mastery-based Model (M3)  
This course will use a modular mastery-based model (M3) pedagogy; whereby the course is 
partitioned into modules, and you will be given multiple assessment opportunities (as shown in 
the table below) to demonstrate your mastery of the modules (learning objectives). There will be 
nine different course modules as described. These modules represent the main topics covered in 
this course and define the learning objectives for the course and lectures. I have adopted this 
model (M3) for several semesters, and it is quite popular with students as it gives a great learning 
experience. It enhances students’ engagement and lowers – almost eliminates – test anxiety.  
I will explain the details when we meet. At this stage my only suggestion to you is get involved 
from day one and you will do excellently!

Additionally, the following subjects are of special importance and will be assessed through 
homework assignments that have higher weights:

Course grade is based on sum of modules grade.  
Each Module will have 10.5-points. For a total of 94.5 points. The other 5.5% is 
submitting homework (HWK) and class participation. Three HWK identified 
with an asterisk under weekly schedule each have 1%. Other HWK will be 
checked for completeness but not graded and have    
You must demonstrate your mastery on all modules (i.e. score 60% or better). 
However, if the overall score is higher than 60% then two modules can have a 
score lower than 60% but not less than 40%.  
NOTE: Last performance in each module NOT best performance counts as 
your grade for that module.  
The minimum requirements for final letter grades are as follows:  
A = 90%, B+ = 85%, B = 80%, C+ = 75%, C = 67%, D = 60%, F < 60%  
All quizzes/tests will be "Closed Book". Only the FE Handbook is permitted as 
a resource, but NO notes may be added.  
Please note that your final grade will reflect your work and calculated exactly as 
indicated in the above breakdown, no extra credits will be given.   
The NJIT Honor Code will be upheld, and any violations will be brought to the 
immediate attention of the Dean of Students.

EXAMS:   
• There will be three exams during the semester.   
• There will be a Final Exam during Finals Week.   
• Exams must have Free-Body-Diagrams. ALL work must be shown for full credit.   
• There will be NO make-up exams as the new pedagogy implemented provides 
multiple opportunities to be assessed on each module.   
• We do NOT curve the grades.   
• The solution must illustrate the understanding of the material. Correct numerical 
solutions alone are insufficient for any credit.   
• All answers must be accompanied by the appropriate and correct units.   
• The dates of the exams are shown on the schedule above. Dates may be changed at the 
instructor’s discretion with a minimum of 2 weeks’ notice.  
• No make-up exams will be needed/given since under the pedagogy used there will be 
multiple opportunities to demonstrate mastery of each module (subject).  
HOMEWORK:   
• Homework sets must be uploaded on Canvas by the due date.   
• Submit homework as one pdf file with pages arranged in order by problem number.   
• Use any 8½ x 11 paper that will clearly show the problems when scanned.   
• On the top of each page print your name, course and section, and problem number. • 
All problems must show the figure and data provided with the problem  • All problems 
must have a free body diagram.

Please note that while homework carries very low weight in determining your overall course 
score, it is incredibly important for your success. I refer to quizzes as classwork because they are 
similar to homework problems but performed in class. Completing your homework diligently and 
on time will greatly enhance your understanding and preparation, ultimately helping you excel in

Communication: Students must use their UCID to sign in at (canvas.njit.edu). Some 
course material may be posted on Canvas. The instructor will advise when important 
information is uploaded. Email will be used to communicate outside of the classroom. 
Students are responsible for checking their NJIT student email on a regular basis. 
When emailing the instructor, you must put the course number in the subject line. Emails 
that do not put this in the subject line will not be opened. Within the body of the email, you 
must put the class day/section and your full name. 
Quizzes: All quizzes will be in person during the designated class time. All quizzes will 
be closed book/notes. 
Lectures/Class: Students are expected to attend every class (either in person or via 
Zoom per the hybrid schedule) and sign in. In the event that you cannot attend class, you 
may request to attend one of the other sections as a make-up, however this is limited to 
availability and permission from the instructor. However, students cannot choose to attend 
a different section on a continuous basis. Students are responsible for submitting all 
homework, projects, assignments, quizzes, etc. on the due date (during class time). 
Students who miss assignments due to attendance MUST contact the Dean of Students 
to be excused for absences. Students who miss class with no valid excuse from the Dean

Class Recordings: Some portions of this course may be recorded and posted on Canvas 
during the Zoom meetings only (there will be no recordings of in person classes). 
Students are not permitted to record the class with their personal devices. Weekly 
lectures will not be recorded and should not be expected by the student. The course is 
intended to be interactive and participation is expected in real-time whether the class is 
in person or online. 
The instructor will inform the students when recordings begin/end during the class. 
Homework and Homework Format: Homework will be assigned at various points 
throughout the semester. If the assignment is to be printed, it MUST be printed on the 
course titleblock that is available on Canvas and must have the student’s first and last 
names at a minimum. For homework assignments that are submitted via Canvas, these 
will be saved as the drawing file unless otherwise specified. The file name should be 
saved as LastName_FirstName_AssignmentName 
 
Assignment Policy: Assignments are due at the beginning of class. Late assignments 
will NOT be accepted. All assignments are to be submitted in class on paper, unless 
otherwise requested, on the due date, or via email to srr3@njit.edu ON OR BEFORE the 
beginning of class on the due date. Email is ONLY to be used if you will be absent from

MEMORANDUM FOR  AEROSPACE STUDIES (AS) 300 STUDENTS 
 
FROM:  AS300 Instructor 
 
SUBJECT:  AS334 Classroom Policy, Course Objectives, and Syllabus (Spring Semester 2025) 
 
1.  This letter and attachment explain classroom procedures, provide course objectives, and list class dates 
along with lesson titles.  Per AFROTCI 36-2011, paragraph 9.10.4, “Do not require students to purchase 
commercial texts.”  All course materials (electronic textbooks, guides, and course slides) will be available on 
Canvas.  All students must use their NJIT ID to gain access to Canvas.  Contact the NJIT IST Helpdesk for 
help—refer to their website at ist.njit.edu.  The Google Drive will be used as a backup to Canvas.  Computer 
Based Training lessons (CBTs), if required, will be available via the Holm Center Curriculum Site.  All 
students must be registered for the class, because an accurate class roster will be created and verified via 
NJIT after the first class session. 
 
2.  Course Objectives:  
 
AS 300 is designed to build on the leadership fundamentals taught in AS200. The theme of this year is 
Leading People and Effective Communication. You will have the opportunity to utilize your skills as you 
begin more of a leadership role in the detachment. The goal is for each of you to have a more in- depth 
understanding of how to effectively lead people, and this semester will provide some of the tools to apply 
in detachment leadership roles. The topics covered in this course include critical thinking, change 
management, and familiarizing you with our enlisted force. A large emphasis is placed on effective 
communication, where you will hone your writing and briefing skills. Public speaking is a part of the job 
in the USAF, so we will be increasing your public speaking skills. You will also be introduced to Air 
Force bullet writing, which is an art form in and of itself. The course continues into advanced skills, 
ethics, and culture training that will prepare you to become an officer and a supervisor. 
 
3.  Grading Policy: 
 
a.  Cadets are responsible for all lessons assigned.  Assignments are due on the day specified on the 
syllabus at the beginning of class unless otherwise stated by the instructor.  Failure to turn in an 
assignment on time will result in an automatic zero for that assignment.  ASSIGNMENTS WILL NOT 
BE ACCEPTED LATE WITHOUT PRIOR APPROVAL FROM THE AS300 INSTRUCTOR.  
  
 b.  Points towards your final grade will be distributed as follows:

d.  AS300 cadets who receive a grade of D or lower in any AS course (including Leadership Laboratory 
(LLAB)) will result in a Conditional Event (CE) and a Commander’s Retention Review (CRR).  Cadets will 
not be permitted to continue in the ROTC program during the next semester! Per AFROTCI 36-2011, 
Paragraph 9.10.2.1, “Cadets may apply for re-entry, but the failed class(es) will have to be re-accomplished for 
AFROTC credit.”  
 
e. Incompletes should be used for unusual or unavoidable circumstances; they will not be used for make-
up of unsatisfactory or delinquent work, or as a sanction for cadets who do not return uniforms.  The Det/CC 
must approve all “Incompletes” for AS classes and LLAB.  An “Incomplete” must be resolved NLT the end of 
the following term or it will constitute a failure. 
 
4.  Attendance Policy: 
 
Cadets and Participating Students MUST ATTEND 80% of the scheduled classes to receive a passing 
grade.   
 
a.  Tardiness – Tardiness is both unprofessional and disrespectful, and will not be tolerated.  Class 
begins promptly, and you will be considered tardy if not in your seat by the class start time.  Excessive 
tardiness (3 times) will result in an unexcused absence.  If delayed by forces beyond your control, call the 
office/email ASAP to let the instructor know.  An excused absence may be given with proper notification.  
If you are more than 15 minutes late and do not give proper notice, you will receive an unexcused absence 
for that week.           
 
b.  Absences – Excused absences will be given for incidents beyond your control (i.e. sickness, family 
emergency, etc.).  Unexcused absences will be given for incidents that resulted in lack of planning and/or 
prioritization (forgot to do Humanities paper due tomorrow so you cannot go to ROTC, vacations, etc.).  
Opportunities to make up ONE excused absence may be given on a case-by-case basis and objectives 
must be made up for the absence to be excused.     
 
c.  Proper notification - If you plan to be absent from class and/or LLAB, you must email a 
Memorandum for Record (MFR) to your instructor, the Operations Flight Commander (OFC), and your 
cadet chain of command, as soon as you are aware of the absence.  At the instructor’s discretion, it will be 
recorded as either an excused or an unexcused absence.

6.  Counseling Requirements:   
 
I will conduct personal counseling with each of you during the semester.  Each cadet will have their scheduled 
appointment completed by 21 Mar 2024.  Your academic plan must be up to date, signed by your advisor 
& brought to the counseling appointment. All cadets will wear the service dress uniform for the 
counseling session.  Cadets will report in and out as part of their personal counseling appointments. 
 
7.  Classroom Procedures: 
 
a.  Every cadet will wear the uniform of the day to class. Personal appearance standards will be in 
strict accordance with the policies outlined in AFI 36-2903 and the applicable AFROTC supplements. 
 
b.  A class leader will be assigned.  The following are the class leader responsibilities: 
-  Check with the instructor 15 minutes before class to see if he/she has any special instructions 
-  Bring and return any audio-visual equipment needed for class 
-  Call the class to attention when the instructor enters/leaves the room 
-  Take class attendance and provide results to the instructor 
 
8.  Classroom Behavior:  
 
a.  As future United States Air Force officers, you are expected to conduct yourselves as such.  Disruption 
and disrespect toward the instructor or other students will not be tolerated.  The following weekly meeting 
expectations are not all inclusive but should help guide your professional conduct. 
 
-  Turn all cell phones OFF or to AIRPLANE MODE 
-  Place all extra belongings that you bring to class neatly on your desk or under your chair  
-  Tobacco and alcohol products are not permitted  
-  Food and drinks are permitted but must not cause distraction and must be cleaned up 
-  Questions/participation is highly encouraged, and indicates you came to the meeting prepared to 
clarify any questions you have from the weekly lessons. 
-  Be courteous and respectful of others, and display professionalism at all times 
 
Additionally expectations if class is a virtual format;  
-  log onto ZOOM at least 5 minutes prior to class start time 
-  stay visible on Zoom while class is in session 
-  stay muted when not actively speaking in class 
 
b.  This is a learning environment, challenge each other and yourself with multiple perspectives on 
classroom topics and world issues; however, remain courteous and allow others to fully explain themselves 
and at a minimum respect their take on a particular subject. 
 
c.  Failure to conduct yourself appropriately during class will result in the following actions: 
 
First Offense:  Verbal Cadet counseling  
Second Offense:  Cadet Wing counseling  
Third Offense: Cadre counseling and potential disenrollment.  
 
d.  Academic Integrity is the cornerstone of higher education and is central to the ideals of this course, 
your university and the DAF. Cheating is strictly prohibited and devalues the degree that you are working 
towards. Additionally, it is in direct violation of the AFROTC Honor Code; “We will not lie, cheat, steal, nor 
tolerate among us anyone who does”. As a member of the ROTC program and NJIT community, it is your 
responsibility to protect your educational investment and professional development by knowing and following 
the AF Honor Code and NJIT academic code of integrity policy found at NJIT Academic Integrity Code.  
 
As ROTC cadets and as your professor, it is our professional obligation and responsibility to report any 
academic misconduct to the Dean of Students Office. Any student found in violation of the code by cheating, 
plagiarizing or using any online software inappropriately will result in disciplinary action. This may include a 
failing grade of F, and/or suspension or dismissal from the university or AFROTC program. If you have any 
questions about the code of Academic Integrity, please contact the NJIT Dean of Students Office 
at dos@njit.edu. For questions about the AFROTC Honor Code, please contact your instructor.  
 
e.  Artificial Intelligence (AI) Assistance - This course expects students to work without AI assistance in order 
to better develop their skills in this content area. As such, AI usage is not permitted throughout this course

9.  Exams, Quizzes, Reading, and Assignments: 
 
a.  There will be one final exam in this class.  Exams may include but are not limited to the following 
types of questions: multiple choice, true/false, completion, and short essay.  The last may be included to 
evaluate the cadet’s communication skills, as well as his/her knowledge level of that material.  All exam 
questions will be based on the AS300 Samples of Behavior (SOBs). 
 
b.  Quizzes will be given following some lessons.  They may be announced ahead of time or 
unannounced (pop quiz).  As with the exam, quizzes may include any combination of the following types 
of questions: multiple choice, true/false, completion, and short essay.  Quiz questions will be based on the 
AS300 Samples of Behavior (SOBs).  
 
c.  You must read all assignments.  I take the time to prepare for class, and I expect you to do the same.  
Reading assignments and material will enable you to intelligently ask questions, respond to questions, and 
participate in class discussions.   
 
d. Following the Department of the Air Force Writing lesson, each cadet will write at least 
performance statement per week (350-character limit) to email to their instructor on the Monday of every 
week. Near the end of the term or year, cadets will transfer their performance statements onto an AF Form 
715, OPB, and submit to their instructor.  The intent is for cadets to develop the habit of tracking 
individual accomplishments, become more comfortable with the narrative-style writing, and to 
experience consolidating performance onto the AF Form 715. Use AFH 33-337, The Tongue and 
Quill as a reference.   
 
e. Cadets will write a 2-page memorandum IAW DAFH 33-337 explain semester goals.  
 
f. Cadets will send the instructor a 300-word email IAW DAFH 33-337 self-reflecting on their 
AFROTC career and overall performance. The signature block will not count towards the word total. 
 
g. Cadets will write a 4-page position paper IAW DAFH 33-337 on assigned topic. 
 
h. Cadets will deliver a 19-20-minute prepared briefing. This activity is designed to provide an additional 
opportunity for cadets to refine their verbal communication skills. 
 
10.  Leadership Laboratory (LLAB):  
 
This is the military aspect of the Air Force ROTC program.  You must attend LLAB.  LLAB will be 
graded on a pass/fail basis.  Performance at LLAB does not affect your Aerospace Studies course grade.  
In LLAB you will practice and learn military customs and courtesies, formal military formations, refine 
your followership and leadership skills, and gain an understanding of Air Force jobs and lifestyles.

SUBJECT:  Spring 2025 Leadership Laboratory Syllabus 
 
1.  Instructor Information:  Captain John Phinney

2.  Introduction.  This syllabus will explain the requirements that you must fulfill in order to pass Leadership 
Laboratory (LLAB).  LLAB and Physical Training (PT) provide you with practical, hands-on command and 
staff leadership experiences through various tasks within the 490th Cadet Wing (CW).  For admin purposes, 
cadets are classified by the following groups: 
 
a. Basic Cadet (BC) Training.  Cadets who are part of the GMC but are not scheduled to attend Field 
Training, normally AS100s 
  
b.  Basic Cadet Leader (BCL).  GMC cadets scheduled to attend FT in the upcoming year, normally 
AS200, AS250 or AS500 cadets 
 
c.  Intermediate Cadet Leader (ICL).  Cadets returning from FT, Normally AS300 cadets 
 
d.  Senior Cadet Leader (SCL).  Cadets scheduled to be commissioned in the upcoming year, normally 
AS400 cadets. 
 
3.  Goals. 
 
a.  Expose first-year cadets to an informative and motivational program designed to recruit, retain, and 
familiarize cadets with the Air Force way of life; and foster leadership, followership, teamwork, and 
esprit de corps. 
 
b.  Instruct BCL cadets on the mental and physical skills needed to succeed in the AFROTC FT 
environment.  
 
c.  Offer cadets returning from FT opportunities to demonstrate and develop leadership and management 
skills needed to be successful as an active duty officer.  
 
d.  Provide commissioning cadets additional opportunities to demonstrate and develop leadership and 
management skills needed to be successful as an active duty officer, and adequately prepare them to 
transition from the ROTC environment to active duty.  
4.  Attendance Policy.  Cadets must attend 80% of all LLAB activities to include Professional Officer 
Course (POC) LLAB for the POC and meet the 80% PT attendance minimum.  See the Attendance Policy, 
attached, for more information. 
 
5.  LLAB Implementation. READ THE WEEKLY SCHEDULE ON THE LAST PAGE.

a.  Operations Orders (OPORDs).  These orders provide specific direction for LLAB and mandatory 
events such as uniform wear, location of event, and objectives to be presented.  OPORDs will be made 
available to cadets no later than (NLT) 1900L on the Friday prior to LLAB. Every cadet is required to 
read the OPORDs before each training day and come prepared for that week’s activities.  
 
b.  Uniform.  OPORDs specify the uniform to be worn at scheduled mandatory events.  In accordance 
with (IAW) AFI 36-2903, Dress and Personal Appearance, and the AFROTC supplement to that 
instruction.  Uniform for military events after LLAB will be coordinated with Aerospace Studies (AS) 
Instructor.  
  
c.  Customs and Courtesies.  When in uniform, you shall adhere to proper military customs and courtesies 
(e.g., calling room/area to attention, saluting superior officers/cadet officers when in a designated salute 
zone, use of “sir” or “ma’am”, standing when addressed by superior officers).  It is also appropriate to 
follow these rules when at the detachment or whenever you are in contact with the cadre or other military 
members. 
 
6.  Grading and Evaluation Procedures. LLAB (AS335); POC LLAB (AS336); and PT (PE145) grades are 
either Pass or Fail.  Performance at these classes does not affect your AS course grade.   
 
a.  All cadets must attend a minimum of 80% of LLAB activities.  Cadets must also meet the 80% PT 
attendance requirement to pass LLAB each academic term. All cadets must go into CANVAS and 
complete the verification of presence assignment for AS335 and PE145. POC must complete this 
assignment for AS336 as well.  
 
b.  All cadets must attempt the Fitness Assessment (FA) at least once.  If a cadet fails the FA, this does 
not constitute a failure in LLAB, but it may impact cadet retention status.  Unless a cadet has cadre-
approved documentation from a doctor, failure to attempt the FA will result in a failure in LLAB.  The 
Body Mass Index/Body Fat (BMI/BF) portion of the FA will be conducted on those cadets who are 
medically/physically exempt from the physical portion of the FA.  
 
c.  SCL cadets who have completed their AS classes but have not graduated will attend LLAB unless 
excused in writing by the Det/CC, attend PT at least twice a week, and continue to meet all fitness, 
academic, and military requirements.  
 
d.  GMC who have completed AS100 and AS200 but have not entered the POC or extended POC will 
attend LLAB unless excused in writing by the Det/CC, attend PT at least twice a week, and continue to 
meet all weight, fitness, academic and uniform wear requirements. 
e.  Attitude Toward Training: Inability or refusal to conform to military training may result in immediate 
failure and/or dismissal as determined by the Det/CC. Normally, evaluation and feedback are provided to 
each cadet verbally at LLAB or in writing during the designated term’s Cadet Developmental Feedback 
(CDF) session.  
 
f.  If a cadet fails LLAB, the cadet may apply for re-entry but the LLAB, will have to be re-accomplished 
for AFROTC credit.  
 
g.  Incompletes. The Det/CC must approve all "incompletes" for AS classes and LLAB. "Incompletes" 
should be used for unusual or unavoidable circumstances, such as an extended illness. "Incompletes" 
must not be used for make-up of unsatisfactory or delinquent work, or as a sanction for cadets who do not

7.  Objectives and Schedule.  Semester objectives for each LLAB are listed in the 490th CW Operations 
Plan (OPLAN).  The OPLAN gives a draft schedule of LLAB dates and times for the entire semester - these 
dates and times may change, so pay attention to the OPORDs and CW email announcements.  
 
a. LLAB is held from 0700-0900 every Friday throughout the NJIT academic term with the 
exception of NJIT’s recognized holidays or at discretion of OFC with the approval of the Det/CC.  
 
8.  Policy Reminders.  Det 490/CC briefs detachment policy to all cadets at the beginning of the term.  The 
following is a brief reminder of some of the items you are responsible for knowing: 
 
a.  Physical Discipline and Inappropriate Training:  Physical discipline and inappropriate training are not 
allowed.  Examples of inappropriate training techniques are giving direct individual feedback with raised 
voices, physical maltreatment, physical contact, physical activities given as a consequence, and verbal 
maltreatment.   
 
b.  Relations with Subordinates:  Any romantic relationships between cadets must be reported to cadre so 
the cadet wing positions may be organized to ensure there are no conflicts of interest in the chain of 
command.  Also, cadets are forbidden from using their rank or position to take or be perceived as taking 
undue advantage of subordinates or infringing on the rights of subordinates. 
 
c.  Practical Military Training (PMT) events:  Training is either deemed Mandatory or Voluntary. Only 
cadre may authorize an event as mandatory.  All mandatory PMT events will have an OPORD signed 
by the OFC.  Cadre and cadets will ensure pressure is not employed (directly or otherwise) on the CW to 
participate in voluntary PMT or extracurricular activities. 
 
d.  Dress and Appearance:  If you’ve been issued a uniform, unless otherwise directed, you must wear it 
when attending any AFROTC function or scheduled meetings with cadre.  If not, you must dress 
appropriately, and maintain Department of the Air Force (DAF) grooming standards. 
 
e.  Sexual Harassment, Discrimination, Hazing:  There is zero tolerance for such activities in the Air 
Force or at this detachment.  Violators will be dismissed from ROTC. 
 
f.  Medical Coverage:  Only mandatory PMT events are considered sponsored by AFROTC and thus 
provide Department of Labor (DOL) medical coverage.  Students who have been properly counseled and 
placed in participating student status are not eligible for coverage. 
 
g.  Academic Integrity is the cornerstone of higher education and is central to the ideals of this course, 
your university and the DAF. Cheating is strictly prohibited and devalues the degree that you are working 
towards. Additionally, it is in direct violation of the AFROTC Honor Code; “We will not lie, cheat, steal, 
nor tolerate among us anyone who does”. As a member of the ROTC program and NJIT community, it is 
your responsibility to protect your educational investment and professional development by knowing and 
following the AF Honor Code and NJIT academic code of integrity policy found at NJIT Academic 
Integrity Code.  
 
As ROTC cadets and as your professor, it is our professional obligation and responsibility to report any

Objective Proficiency Codes: 
Intent: The proficiency code identifies the desired skill level per the appropriate cadet level. 
The training should be designed to achieve the desired level of proficiency as stated on each 
objective. Inherently, a higher-level of training proficiency is required for POC cadets teaching 
certain critical skills; therefore, completion of Field Training is required prior to the start of 
training. At the discretion of cadre, cadets may be allowed to formally instruct, or evaluate 
cadets without completion of this course. 
These proficiency codes are closely related to Bloom's taxonomy, which is used in Academic

Spring 2025 Course Syllabus

COURSE INFORMATION: 
Course Description:  CHEM126A (General Chemistry Lab II) is a laboratory course designed 
concurrently with CHEM126. Instructions are in the lab book, and concepts are from the text and lecture 
of the CHEM126 course. The experiments are designed to provide undergraduate students with further 
practical experience and continue to train students with laboratory techniques/equipment standards for 
chemistry laboratories.

POLICIES 
All CES students must familiarize themselves with and adhere to all official university-wide student 
policies. CES takes these policies very seriously and enforces them strictly. 
Grading Policy:  
The final grade in this course will be determined as follows: 
Lab Reports and Accuracy: 85% 
Pre-lab: 10% 
Cleanliness of lab bench and sink: 5% 
Grading scheme:

Attendance Policy: 
● Attendance is mandatory.  Students will be allowed only one make-up lab at the end of the semester.
Suppose a student has a legitimate reason for missing a lab. In that case, the student should contact the
Dean of the Students office and present written verifiable proof of the reason for missing the lab, e.g., a
doctor’s note, police report, court notice, etc., clearly stating the date AND time of the mitigating problem.
The student must also notify the instructor through the Dean of the students.  Two unexcused absences
will result in an automatic failure.
● Students will be asked to sign the attendance sheet each week when arriving in the lab.
● All experiments must be completed during the same lab period.
● Students will be shown a demonstration video for each experiment. They should watch the video
before attending class.
Pre-lab Questions: 
EACH student must complete Pre-lab Questions in the lab book before the class for each experiment 
and watch the video of the experiment.  
**Attention: Only on-time pre-lab Questions will be accepted. 
Lab Reports:  
A lab report will be submitted for each experiment. The report includes the completed Report Sheet and 
Questions in the lab book and a separate page for your calculations if needed. EACH GROUP should 
submit ONE lab report. Students have until Sunday at 11:59 PM to finish the report for all 
experiments.  
**Attention: Only on-time lab reports will be accepted. 
Working in Groups: 
• Students may perform experiments with one or two other people. Students in groups larger than three
will receive a zero for that lab grade.
• Students working in groups must arrive at the lab and begin the experiment simultaneously. They
must remain in the lab until the experiment is completed.
• Students collaborating in groups can experiment and calculate together. However, each group is
required to submit ONE lab report that includes data and calculations derived from their work.
Make-up Policy: 
The final week of the semester for CHEM126A-002 is designated for students to make up a missed lab. 
During this time, students can complete only one missed experiment. However, students may make up 
more than one laboratory experiment if they have submitted the justification to the Dean of the 
Student’s Office for the missed laboratory(s).

• Clothing that covers your legs and shoulders is required.  No shorts or short skirts.
• Everyone will be required to wear lab coats and gloves during each experiment.
• Closed shoes must always be worn.  No sandals.
• Food or drink is not allowed in the lab.
• Turn off cell phones.  Texting is not permitted in the lab.
• Properly dispose of waste materials.
• Clean your workspace at the end of each lab session and wash your hands before leaving the laboratory.  A 5%
PENALTY WILL BE APPLIED TO YOUR LAB REPORT SCORE FOR FAILURE TO CLEAN UP

homework will be worth 50 points. Additional practice problems will be provided on Canvas. These will not be 
collected or graded, but serve as great practice for the exams. In addition, there will be five graded quizzes 
throughout the semester, also in Aktiv learning. These can be completed within a period pre-determined by the 
instructor. In total, quizzes will be worth 50 points. These will be two exams, on midterm and on final, each 
covering 6 chapters. Each exam will worth 100 points. Makeup exam are not encouraged. If you must miss an exam 
contact the instructor before the exam or immediately after. Makeup should be taken within the first week of the 
exam and before exams are given back. You must have valid excuse and a doctor note.  
 
The final grade in this course will be determined as follows:

Attendance Policy: Each class is a learning experience that cannot be replicated through simply “getting the 
notes.” Slides will be accessible on Canvas prior to beginning each new chapter. However, they are templates 
and will be expanded during lectures. Therefore, only attendance will provide you with the full notes, worked 
problems and announcements regarding covered material.  
 
Exams: There will be two exams held in class during the semester. The following exam periods are 
tentative and therefore possibly subject to change: 
 
Midterm Exam  March 10 
Final Exam Period May 12-16 
 
 
Makeup Exam Policy: There will normally be NO MAKE-UP QUIZZES OR EXAMS during the semester. In the 
event that a student has a legitimate reason for missing a quiz or exam, the student should contact the Dean 
of Students office and present written verifiable proof of the reason for missing the exam, e.g., a doctor’s 
note, police report, court notice, etc. clearly stating the date AND time of the mitigating problem. The 
student must also notify the CES Department Office/Instructor that the exam will be missed so that 
appropriate steps can be taken to make up the grade.
