MEMORANDUM FOR  AEROSPACE STUDIES 200 STUDENTS 
 
FROM:  AS222 Instructor 
 
SUBJECT:  AS222 Classroom Policy, Course Objectives, and Syllabus 
 
1.  This letter and attachment explains classroom procedures, provides course objectives, and lists a 
detailed schedule.  Per AFROTCI 36-2011, paragraph 9.10.4, “Do not require students to purchase 
commercial texts.”  All readings, slides, and course materials are available on Canvas and Google Drive; 
all students must use their NJIT ID to gain access to Canvas.  Contact the NJIT IST Helpdesk for help--
refer to their website at ist.njit.edu.  Computer Based Training Lessons (CBTs), if required, will be 
available via the Holm Center Curriculum Site.  All students must register for the class since NJIT will 
create and verify an accurate class roster after the first class session. 
 
2.  Course Objectives:  
 
This course is designed to provide a fundamental understanding of both leadership and team building.  
This course picks up where AS100 left off and builds on the many layers that contribute to leadership, 
including aspects that do not always jump to mind.  Such things include listening, understanding yourself, 
being a good follower and problem solving efficiently.  AS 200 students will apply these leadership 
perspectives when completing team building activities and discussing conflict management.  Air Force 
(AF) knowledge and history will be integrated throughout the course to enhance these objectives.  
Students should demonstrate basic verbal and written communication skills.  Cadets will apply these 
lessons at Field Training (FT), which follows AS200.  
 
3.  Grading Policy: 
 
a.  Points towards your final grade will be distributed as follows:

c.  Cadets are responsible for all lessons assigned.  Assignments are due on the day specified on the 
syllabus at the beginning of class unless otherwise stated by the instructor.  Failure to turn in an 
assignment on time will result in an automatic zero for that assignment. Assignments will not be 
accepted late without prior approval.  
 
d.  If the cadet fails the course, they may apply for re-entry. However, they are required to re-
accomplished the course for AFROTC credit. (AFROTCI36-2011v3 para 9.10.2.1.) 
 
e.  Incompletes should be used for unusual or unavoidable circumstances. “Incompletes” will not be 
used for make-up of unsatisfactory or delinquent work.  The Det/CC must approve all “Incompletes” for 
AS classes and LLAB.  An “Incomplete” must be resolved NLT the end of the following term or it will 
constitute a failure. (AFROTCI36-2011v3 para 9.10.2.2.) 
 
f.  You may request your current grade at any time. 
 
4.  Attendance Policy: 
 
Cadets and Participating Students MUST ATTEND 80% of the scheduled classes to receive a passing 
grade.   
 
a.  Tardiness – Tardiness is unprofessional and disrespectful and will not be tolerated.  Class begins 
promptly at 1030EST, and you are tardy if not in your seat by the class start time.  Excessive tardiness (3 
times) will result in an unexcused absence.  If delayed by forces beyond your control, call the office as 
soon as possible to let the instructor know.  An excused absence may be approved with proper 
notification.  If you are more than 15 minutes late and do not give proper notice, you will receive an 
unexcused absence for that week.           
 
b.  Absences – Excused absences are defined as incidents beyond your control (i.e. sickness, family 
emergency, etc.) or absences that are planned using good judgement and that you provide the instructor 
timely notification. Unexcused absences are defined as incidents that resulted in lack of planning and/or 
prioritization. The instructor may approve opportunities to make up ONE excused absence on a case-by-
case basis.     
 
c.  Proper notification - If you plan to be absent from class and/or Leadership Lab, you must email a 
Memorandum for Record (MR, aka MFR) to your instructor, Maj Laake (Operations Flight Commander), 
and cadet chain of command as soon as you are aware of the absence. It is the instructors discretion as to 
whether an absence is considered excused or unexcused.

6.  Counseling Requirements:   
 
The Instructor will conduct personal counseling with each student during the semester.  Each cadet will 
have his or her scheduled appointment completed by 13 Mar 2025.  Your Academic Plan must be up-to-
date, signed by advisor, and with you at the counseling appointment. If you don’t have it, you risk being 
turned away.  If you need help with your Academic Plan, ensure you meet with your academic advisor in 
advance as to ensure you meet the above timeline to have the counseling complete. Cadets will report in 
and out as part of their personal counseling appointments and must be in service dress uniform. Note: 
Cadets not issued a uniform prior to their scheduled counseling session, will wear professional civilian 
attire.  Physical Training uniforms are not authorized for this counseling. 
 
7.  Classroom Procedures: 
 
a.  Every cadet issued a uniform will wear it to class, otherwise wear professional civilian attire.  
Personal appearance standards will be in strict accordance with the policies outlined in AFI 36-2903 and 
the applicable AFROTC supplements. 
 
b.  The instructor will assign a class leader.  Considered a developmental position, the class leader 
will: 
-  check with the instructor before class for any special instructions  
-  bring and return any audio-visual equipment needed for class 
-  call the class to attention when the instructor enters/leaves the room 
-  take class attendance, record weekly attendance, and report results to the instructor 
-  act as a formal leadership position whose primary role is to communicate expectations or 
instructions between class and instructor 
 
8.  Classroom Behavior:  
 
a.  You are expected to conduct yourselves as professionals.  Class disruption and disrespect toward 
the instructor or other students will not be tolerated.  The following classroom expectations are not all-
inclusive but should help guide your professional conduct. 
 
-  Be on time 
-  Turn all cell phones OFF or place them in airline mode 
-  Place all extra belongings that you bring to class neatly on your desk or under your chair  
-  Tobacco and alcohol products are not permitted  
-  Food and drinks are permitted but must not cause distraction and must be cleaned up 
-  Questions/participation is highly encouraged, and indicates you came to the meeting prepared 
to clarify any questions you have from the weekly lessons. 
-  Be courteous and respectful of others, and display professionalism at all times 
 
Additionally expectations if class is in a virtual format/setting:  
-  log onto ZOOM at least 5 minutes prior to class start time 
-  stay visible on Zoom while class is in session 
-  stay muted when not actively speaking in class 
 
b.  Failure to conduct yourself appropriately during class will result in the following actions: 
 
First Offense:  Verbal Cadet counseling  
Second Offense:  Cadet Wing counseling  
Third Offense: Cadre counseling and potential disenrollment. 
 
c.  Academic Integrity – Academic Integrity is the cornerstone of higher education and is central to the 
ideals of this course, your university and the DAF. Cheating is strictly prohibited and devalues the degree 
that you are working towards. Additionally, it is in direct violation of the AFROTC Honor Code; “We 
will not lie, cheat, steal, nor tolerate among us anyone who does”. As a member of the ROTC program 
and NJIT community, it is your responsibility to protect your educational investment and professional 
development by knowing and following the AF Honor Code and NJIT academic code of integrity policy 
found at NJIT Academic Integrity Code.  
 
As ROTC cadets and as your professor, it is our professional obligation and responsibility to report 
any academic misconduct to the Dean of Students Office. Any student found in violation of the code by 
cheating, plagiarizing or using any online software inappropriately will result in disciplinary action. This 
may include a failing grade of F, and/or suspension or dismissal from the university or AFROTC 
program. If you have any questions about the code of Academic Integrity, please contact the NJIT Dean 
of Students Office at dos@njit.edu. For questions about the AFROTC Honor Code, please contact your 
instructor.  
 
d.  Artificial Intelligence (AI) Assistance - This course expects students to work without AI assistance 
in order to better develop their skills in this content area. As such, any and all AI usage is NOT 
permitted throughout this course and under any circumstance. 
 
9.  Exams, Quizzes, Reading, and Assignments: 
 
a.  There will be one final exam.  The exam may include but is not limited to the following types of 
questions: multiple choice, true/false, completion, and short essay.  If essay is included, it will be used to 
evaluate the cadet’s communication skills, as well as his/her knowledge level of the material.  All exam 
questions are based on the AS200 Lesson Samples of Behavior (SOBs). 
 
b.  Quizzes are at the discretion of the instructor. They may or may NOT be announced ahead of time.  
As with exams, quizzes may include any combination of the following types of questions: multiple 
choice, true/false, completion, and short essay.  However, quiz questions are based off the AS200 Lesson 
Samples of Behavior (SOBs), as well as warrior knowledge and other pertinent information found in the 
weekly reading assignments.     
 
c.  You are expected to read all assignments. Reading assignments and material will enable you to 
intelligently ask questions, respond to questions, and participate in class discussions.   
 
d. Each student will write a self-reflective talking paper.  A memorandum explaining this assignment 
will be posted on canvas. An example of AF Papers can be found in AFH 33-337, The Tongue and Quill.   
 
e.  Each student will present a prepared briefing based on their talking paper.  A memorandum 
explaining this assignment will be provided by the instructor and posted on canvas. 
 
f.  Each student will write a Leadership Reflection Paper. A memorandum explaining this assignment 
will be provided by the instructor and posted on canvas. 
 
10.  Leadership Laboratory (LLAB):  
 
This is the leadership/military training portion of the AFROTC program.  You must attend LLAB. 
However, LLAB is either a pass or fail event and your performance at LLAB will not affect your 
Aerospace Studies course grade.  In LLAB you will practice and learn military customs and courtesies, 
formal military formations, refine your followership and leadership skills, and gain an understanding of 
AF jobs and lifestyles.

SUBJECT:  Spring 2025 Leadership Laboratory Syllabus 
 
1.  Instructor Information:  Captain John Phinney

2.  Introduction.  This syllabus will explain the requirements that you must fulfill in order to pass Leadership 
Laboratory (LLAB).  LLAB and Physical Training (PT) provide you with practical, hands-on command and 
staff leadership experiences through various tasks within the 490th Cadet Wing (CW).  For admin purposes, 
cadets are classified by the following groups: 
 
a. Basic Cadet (BC) Training.  Cadets who are part of the GMC but are not scheduled to attend Field 
Training, normally AS100s 
  
b.  Basic Cadet Leader (BCL).  GMC cadets scheduled to attend FT in the upcoming year, normally 
AS200, AS250 or AS500 cadets 
 
c.  Intermediate Cadet Leader (ICL).  Cadets returning from FT, Normally AS300 cadets 
 
d.  Senior Cadet Leader (SCL).  Cadets scheduled to be commissioned in the upcoming year, normally 
AS400 cadets. 
 
3.  Goals. 
 
a.  Expose first-year cadets to an informative and motivational program designed to recruit, retain, and 
familiarize cadets with the Air Force way of life; and foster leadership, followership, teamwork, and 
esprit de corps. 
 
b.  Instruct BCL cadets on the mental and physical skills needed to succeed in the AFROTC FT 
environment.  
 
c.  Offer cadets returning from FT opportunities to demonstrate and develop leadership and management 
skills needed to be successful as an active duty officer.  
 
d.  Provide commissioning cadets additional opportunities to demonstrate and develop leadership and 
management skills needed to be successful as an active duty officer, and adequately prepare them to 
transition from the ROTC environment to active duty.  
4.  Attendance Policy.  Cadets must attend 80% of all LLAB activities to include Professional Officer 
Course (POC) LLAB for the POC and meet the 80% PT attendance minimum.  See the Attendance Policy, 
attached, for more information. 
 
5.  LLAB Implementation. READ THE WEEKLY SCHEDULE ON THE LAST PAGE.

a.  Operations Orders (OPORDs).  These orders provide specific direction for LLAB and mandatory 
events such as uniform wear, location of event, and objectives to be presented.  OPORDs will be made 
available to cadets no later than (NLT) 1900L on the Friday prior to LLAB. Every cadet is required to 
read the OPORDs before each training day and come prepared for that week’s activities.  
 
b.  Uniform.  OPORDs specify the uniform to be worn at scheduled mandatory events.  In accordance 
with (IAW) AFI 36-2903, Dress and Personal Appearance, and the AFROTC supplement to that 
instruction.  Uniform for military events after LLAB will be coordinated with Aerospace Studies (AS) 
Instructor.  
  
c.  Customs and Courtesies.  When in uniform, you shall adhere to proper military customs and courtesies 
(e.g., calling room/area to attention, saluting superior officers/cadet officers when in a designated salute 
zone, use of “sir” or “ma’am”, standing when addressed by superior officers).  It is also appropriate to 
follow these rules when at the detachment or whenever you are in contact with the cadre or other military 
members. 
 
6.  Grading and Evaluation Procedures. LLAB (AS335); POC LLAB (AS336); and PT (PE145) grades are 
either Pass or Fail.  Performance at these classes does not affect your AS course grade.   
 
a.  All cadets must attend a minimum of 80% of LLAB activities.  Cadets must also meet the 80% PT 
attendance requirement to pass LLAB each academic term. All cadets must go into CANVAS and 
complete the verification of presence assignment for AS335 and PE145. POC must complete this 
assignment for AS336 as well.  
 
b.  All cadets must attempt the Fitness Assessment (FA) at least once.  If a cadet fails the FA, this does 
not constitute a failure in LLAB, but it may impact cadet retention status.  Unless a cadet has cadre-
approved documentation from a doctor, failure to attempt the FA will result in a failure in LLAB.  The 
Body Mass Index/Body Fat (BMI/BF) portion of the FA will be conducted on those cadets who are 
medically/physically exempt from the physical portion of the FA.  
 
c.  SCL cadets who have completed their AS classes but have not graduated will attend LLAB unless 
excused in writing by the Det/CC, attend PT at least twice a week, and continue to meet all fitness, 
academic, and military requirements.  
 
d.  GMC who have completed AS100 and AS200 but have not entered the POC or extended POC will 
attend LLAB unless excused in writing by the Det/CC, attend PT at least twice a week, and continue to 
meet all weight, fitness, academic and uniform wear requirements. 
e.  Attitude Toward Training: Inability or refusal to conform to military training may result in immediate 
failure and/or dismissal as determined by the Det/CC. Normally, evaluation and feedback are provided to 
each cadet verbally at LLAB or in writing during the designated term’s Cadet Developmental Feedback 
(CDF) session.  
 
f.  If a cadet fails LLAB, the cadet may apply for re-entry but the LLAB, will have to be re-accomplished 
for AFROTC credit.  
 
g.  Incompletes. The Det/CC must approve all "incompletes" for AS classes and LLAB. "Incompletes" 
should be used for unusual or unavoidable circumstances, such as an extended illness. "Incompletes" 
must not be used for make-up of unsatisfactory or delinquent work, or as a sanction for cadets who do not

return uniforms. “Incomplete" grades must be resolved NLT the end of the following term or it will 
constitute a failure." 
 
7.  Objectives and Schedule.  Semester objectives for each LLAB are listed in the 490th CW Operations 
Plan (OPLAN).  The OPLAN gives a draft schedule of LLAB dates and times for the entire semester - these 
dates and times may change, so pay attention to the OPORDs and CW email announcements.  
 
a. LLAB is held from 0700-0900 every Friday throughout the NJIT academic term with the 
exception of NJIT’s recognized holidays or at discretion of OFC with the approval of the Det/CC.  
 
8.  Policy Reminders.  Det 490/CC briefs detachment policy to all cadets at the beginning of the term.  The 
following is a brief reminder of some of the items you are responsible for knowing: 
 
a.  Physical Discipline and Inappropriate Training:  Physical discipline and inappropriate training are not 
allowed.  Examples of inappropriate training techniques are giving direct individual feedback with raised 
voices, physical maltreatment, physical contact, physical activities given as a consequence, and verbal 
maltreatment.   
 
b.  Relations with Subordinates:  Any romantic relationships between cadets must be reported to cadre so 
the cadet wing positions may be organized to ensure there are no conflicts of interest in the chain of 
command.  Also, cadets are forbidden from using their rank or position to take or be perceived as taking 
undue advantage of subordinates or infringing on the rights of subordinates. 
 
c.  Practical Military Training (PMT) events:  Training is either deemed Mandatory or Voluntary. Only 
cadre may authorize an event as mandatory.  All mandatory PMT events will have an OPORD signed 
by the OFC.  Cadre and cadets will ensure pressure is not employed (directly or otherwise) on the CW to 
participate in voluntary PMT or extracurricular activities. 
 
d.  Dress and Appearance:  If you’ve been issued a uniform, unless otherwise directed, you must wear it 
when attending any AFROTC function or scheduled meetings with cadre.  If not, you must dress 
appropriately, and maintain Department of the Air Force (DAF) grooming standards. 
 
e.  Sexual Harassment, Discrimination, Hazing:  There is zero tolerance for such activities in the Air 
Force or at this detachment.  Violators will be dismissed from ROTC. 
 
f.  Medical Coverage:  Only mandatory PMT events are considered sponsored by AFROTC and thus 
provide Department of Labor (DOL) medical coverage.  Students who have been properly counseled and 
placed in participating student status are not eligible for coverage. 
 
g.  Academic Integrity is the cornerstone of higher education and is central to the ideals of this course,

Objective Proficiency Codes: 
Intent: The proficiency code identifies the desired skill level per the appropriate cadet level. 
The training should be designed to achieve the desired level of proficiency as stated on each 
objective. Inherently, a higher-level of training proficiency is required for POC cadets teaching 
certain critical skills; therefore, completion of Field Training is required prior to the start of 
training. At the discretion of cadre, cadets may be allowed to formally instruct, or evaluate 
cadets without completion of this course. 
These proficiency codes are closely related to Bloom's taxonomy, which is used in Academic 
Instructor training. The three levels of Bloom’s most closely related are the Remember, 
Understand, and Apply levels.

COURSE GOALS 
Course Objectives 
● The objective of this course is to acquaint students with basic concepts and methods in statistics and 
probability and demonstrate real world applications using examples drawn from various fields. Topics to be 
covered include sampling, descriptive statistics, correlation and regression, notions of probability, binomial 
and normal distributions, estimation and hypothesis testing. 
Course Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to - 
● Demonstrate their understanding of various statistical terms, types of data, and data collection methods 
Efficiently summarize, organize, and present data 
● Effectively compute measures of central tendency, position, and variation and interpret the results 
Demonstrate their understanding of notions of probability and distributions 
● Perform statistical analysis, such as estimation, hypothesis testing, correlation and regression and draw 
conclusions 
● Apply statistical reasoning to real world problems and make informed decisions 
Course Assessment: The assessment tools used will include class participation, homework assignments, quizzes, two 
midterm exams, and a cumulative/ comprehensive final exam.

DMS Course Policies: All DMS students must familiarize themselves with, and adhere to, the Department of 
Mathematical Sciences Course Policies, in addition to official university-wide policies. DMS takes these policies 
very seriously and enforces them strictly.

Attendance Policy:  
Attendance at all classes will be recorded and is mandatory. Please ensure you read and fully understand the Math 
Department’s Attendance Policy. This policy will be strictly enforced. 
Religious Observance: NJIT is committed to supporting students observing religious holidays. Students must 
notify their instructors in writing of any conflicts between course requirements and religious observances, ideally 
by the end of the second week of classes and no later than two weeks before the anticipated absence. 
 
Homework Policy:   
The reading assignment for the entire semester is to read/study the applicable chapter of the text, preferably 
before and after the lecture. Homework is completed online via Cengage/Webassign. Homework problems are 
assigned every week after each topic is completed.  
 
Quiz Policy:  
Quizzes will be given throughout the semester.  They will be based on the lectures, homework, and in-class 
discussions.  
 
There will be 4 - 8 in-class assessments given throughout the semester. There are NO make-up In-Class Quizzes.   
 
In addition, online, asynchronous quizzes via Cengage/Webassign are also assigned to ensure you keep up with the 
class. 
 
Exams: There will be two midterm exams, given during the class meeting time, in the semester and one 
comprehensive final exam. Exams will be tentatively held on the following days:

Final Exam Period  May 10 - May 16, 2025 
 
The final exam will test your knowledge of all the course material taught in the entire course. Make sure you 
read and fully understand the Math Department's Examination Policy. This policy will be strictly enforced.  
Makeup Exam Policy: There will be NO MAKE-UP QUIZZES OR EXAMS during the semester. In the event an exam 
is not taken under rare circumstances where the student has a legitimate reason for missing the exam, the 
student should contact the Dean of Students office and present written verifiable proof of the reason for missing 
the exam, e.g., a doctor’s note, police report, court notice, etc. clearly stating the date AND time of the 
mitigating problem. The student must also notify the Math Department Office/Instructor that the exam will be 
missed.  
Cellular Phones: Cellular phones and other electronic devices must be switched off during all class times.  
Calculator and AI Policy: This course expects students to work without artificial intelligence (AI) assistance in order

to better develop their skills in this content area. As such, AI usage is not permitted throughout this course under any 
circumstance.  There will also be no programmable calculators used in this course.

Homework: Homework is a requirement for this class. Online homework will be completed with MyMathLab, which 
comes with a new copy of the textbook. Access to it can also be purchased directly from the website. 
Generative AI: This course expects students to work without artificial intelligence (AI) assistance in order to better 
develop their skills in this content area. AI usage is not permitted throughout this course under any circumstance. 
Violation of the policy will result in a grade of zero on any impacted assignment(s) and will be reported to the dean of 
students for supplemental discipline. 
Quizzes: Quizzes will be given approximately once a week throughout the semester. They will be based on the 
lecture, homework and the in-class discussions. 
Exams: There will be three common midterm exams held during the semester and one comprehensive common 
final exam. Common Midterm Exams will be held on the following days:

Midterm Exam 2 March 12, 2025 
Midterm Exam 3 April 16, 2025 
Final Exam Period  May 10 - May 16, 2025 
 
The time of the midterm exams is 4:15pm - 5:40 PM for daytime students and 6:00 - 7:25 PM for evening 
students. The final exam will test your knowledge of all the course material taught in the entire course. Make 
sure you read and fully understand the Math Department's Examination Policy. This policy will be strictly 
enforced.

Course Description: Topics include basic probability theory in discrete and continuous sample space, conditional 
probability and independence, Bayes' theorem and event trees, random variables and their distributions, joint 
distribution and notion of dependence, expected values and variance, moment generating functions, useful 
parametric families of distributions including binomial, geometric, hypergeometric, negative binomial, 
exponential, gamma, normal and their applications, simple case of central limit theorem and its uses. 
Prerequisites: MATH 112 with a grade of C or better.

COURSE GOALS 
Course Objectives:  
● Understand the basic principles of probability including laws for unions, intersections, and complements, as 
well as Bayes’ theorem, and use them to calculate probabilities. 
● Understand the definitions of discrete and continuous random variables and their distributions (including 
joint, marginal, and conditional distributions), compute expectation, variance, covariance, and correlation 
of random variables, know the definitions of density and distribution functions of random variables, and be 
able to compute them. 
● Learn about uniform, binomial, multinomial, geometric, hypergeometric, Poisson, negative binomial, 
normal, exponential, and gamma random variables, know their distributions and parameters, and 
understand when to use them.  
● Become familiar with moment generating functions, transformation techniques, and basic limit theorems in 
probability, including the law of large numbers and the central limit theorem. 
Course Outcomes: On successful completion students will  
● have a greater understanding of central concepts and ideas in probability, in particular random variables 
and their distributions, and have learnt how to interpret probabilistic statements; 
● be able to solve introductory level and more challenging problems that involve randomness and chance;  
● be prepared for more advanced mathematics and statistics courses.  
 
Course Assessment: Will be based on weekly homework and quizzes, two midterm exams, and one 
(comprehensive/cumulative) final exam.

COURSE GOALS 
Course Objectives 
● Develop better understanding of key concepts concerning scalar and vector fields learned previously in 
Multivariable Calculus courses. 
● Gain deeper knowledge of multivariate differentiation operations such as Gradient, Divergent and Curl. 
Master the Integral Theorems at the core of Vector Analysis: the Stokes’ (Green’s) Theorem and the 
Divergence (Gauss’) Theorem. 
● Learn the utility of Vector Analysis by learning its relevance to Maxwell’s equations describing the dynamics 
of electric and magnetic fields, and to the equations of Elasticity. 
Course Outcomes 
● Students are prepared for further study in the relevant technological disciplines and more advanced 
mathematics courses. 
● Students can apply their knowledge of Vector Analysis to solve problems in engineering and the natural 
sciences. 
Course Assessment: The assessment of objectives is achieved through homework assignments, in-class quizzes, two 
midterm examinations, and a final examination.

COURSE INFORMATION  
Course Description: Introduction to numerical methods with emphasis on mathematical models. Implements and 
investigates numerical techniques for the solution of linear and nonlinear systems of equations, eigenvalue 
problems, interpolation and approximation, techniques of optimization, Monte Carlo methods, and applications 
to ordinary differential equations and integration.

Prerequisites: MATH 211 with a grade of C or better or MATH 213 with a grade of C or better, and CS 100 with a grade 
of C or better or CS 101 with a grade of C or better or CS 113 with a grade of C or better or CS 115 with a grade of C

● Analyze errors arising in numerical computation of solutions to mathematical and applied problems. 
● Apply numerical techniques to compute approximate solutions of nonlinear equations and differential equations 
and analyze error issues. 
● Apply numerical techniques for interpolation, differentiation and quadrature problems and analyze error issues. 
● Communicate advantages and disadvantages of various numerical techniques and select appropriate numerical 
methods to solve specific problems. 
● Translate numerical problems and methods into computational algorithms, apply the algorithms and develop

and exams.

Attendance Policy: Attendance at all classes will be recorded and is mandatory. Please make sure you read and

NJIT does not cancel classes for non-federally recognized religious holidays. Students observing such holidays 
must follow this policy to receive academic accommodations. The policy ensures that students absent due to 
religious observances are excused without penalty. Faculty are required to provide students an academically 
reasonable timeframe to make up missed assignments, exams, projects, quizzes, or other academic work. 
Students must notify their professors in writing of any conflicts between course requirements and religious 
observances. Faculty must include a reminder on the course syllabus about this notification process. Students 
expecting to miss classes or exams due to religious observances must submit a written list of dates to their 
instructors, ideally by the end of the second week of class, but no later than two weeks before the anticipated 
absence. 
Faculty are expected to make academically appropriate accommodations for missed work, including exams, 
quizzes, and assignments, due to religious observances. Once notified in writing, professors must ensure that 
students are not penalized for missed work, as long as it is completed by a new deadline set by the professor,

which must fall within the academic term. If the student fails to meet this deadline, the professor will assign an 
appropriate grade. Missed work may include homework, projects, exams, quizzes, lab work, or out-of-class 
activities scheduled during the observance.

Homework: Homework assignments REQUIRE use of MATLAB software.  
Exams: There will be four exams during the semester and a final exam during the final exam week. The tentative

The final exam will test your knowledge of all the course material taught in the entire course. Make sure you 
read and fully understand the Math Department's Examination Policy. This policy will be strictly enforced.  
Makeup Exam Policy: There will be NO MAKE-UP QUIZZES OR EXAMS during the semester. In the event an exam 
is not taken under circumstances where the student has a legitimate reason for missing the exam, the student 
should contact the Dean of Students office and present written verifiable proof of the reason for missing the 
exam, e.g., a doctor’s note, police report, court notice, etc. clearly stating the date AND time of the mitigating 
problem. The student must also notify the Math Department Office/Instructor that the exam will be missed. As 
one may make up up to two exams on the final, if one exam is missed, the student will make it up through the 
final exam. If more than one exam is missed during the semester (with a valid excuse), please work with the 
professor to implement an appropriate process. (In rare situations in which multiple students have legitimate 
reasons to miss and exam or in the case of religious observance, make-ups may be allowed).

Course Description: This course introduces mathematical models of loans, bonds, general cash flows, portfolios, 
and asset liability management. Topics include yields, bonds, amortization, sinking funds, yield curves, rates of 
return, measures of duration and convexity, cash flow matching and immunization, and how to perform related 
calculations.

There will be around 3 group quizzes—two with the assigned groups and one by your choice. You will have 10 
minutes to work on your own and 15 minutes to discuss and submit the group work. These are open-book quizzes. 
There will be around 3 close-book individual quizzes throughout the semester. Each quiz has 2-3 questions. One 
two-sided formula sheet with only formulas is allowed.  
 
Exams: There will be two midterm exams held in class during the semester and one comprehensive final exam.

MATH 356: Loss Models

COURSE INFORMATION  
Course Description: This course will introduce a variety of frequency, severity, and aggregate models that are 
useful for actuarial applications. This will include analyzing data from applications, determining a suitable 
model, providing measures of confidence for decisions based on the model, and estimating losses.

Prerequisites: MATH 341 with a grade of C or better.

POLICIES  
DMS Course Policies: All DMS students must familiarize themselves with, and adhere to, the Department of 
Mathematical Sciences Course Policies, in addition to official university-wide policies. DMS takes these policies 
very seriously and enforces them strictly. 
 
Grading Policy: The final grade in this course will be determined as follows:  
 
Quizzes 15% 
Exam I 25% 
Exam II 25% 
Final Exam  35% 
 
Your final letter grade will be based on the following tentative curve.  
 
A  90 - 100 C  65 - 74 
B+  85 - 89 D  55 - 64 
B  80 - 84 F  0 - 54 
C+  75 - 79   
 
Attendance Policy: Attendance at all classes will be recorded and is mandatory. Please make sure you read and 
fully understand the Math Department’s Attendance Policy. This policy will be strictly enforced. 
Religious Observance: NJIT is committed to supporting students observing religious holidays. Students must 
notify their instructors in writing of any conflicts between course requirements and religious observances, ideally 
by the end of the second week of classes and no later than two weeks before the anticipated absence. 
 
Homework: Integrity – Your work is expected to be your own. While help from tutors, classmates, and others is 
encouraged, you are ultimately responsible for mastering the material. Homework will be assigned in each class. 
 
Quiz Policy: There will be announced quizzes periodically. There are no makeup quizzes.  
 
Exams: There will be two exams held in class during the semester and one comprehensive final exam. The final 
exam will be held during the following week:

Exam II Apr 10, 2025

Final Exam Period  May 10 - May 16, 2025 
 
The final exam will test your knowledge of all the course material taught in the entire course. Make sure you 
read and fully understand the Math Department's Examination Policy. This policy will be strictly enforced.  
Makeup Exam Policy: There will be NO MAKE-UP QUIZZES OR EXAMS during the semester. In the event an exam 
is not taken under rare circumstances where the student has a legitimate reason for missing the exam, the 
student should contact the Dean of Students office and present written verifiable proof of the reason for missing 
the exam, e.g., a doctor’s note, police report, court notice, etc. clearly stating the date AND time of the 
mitigating problem. The student must also notify the Instructor that the exam will be missed.  
Cellular Phones: All cellular phones and other electronic devices must be switched off during all class times.  
Use of Artificial Intelligence Tools: This course emphasizes skill development in the designated content area. While 
students are encouraged to engage in independent work, the use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools is permitted solely 
as a reference, similar to how the internet might be used for research or clarification. Direct AI usage to generate 
content, solve problems, or complete assignments on behalf of the student is not allowed.
