    Great Expectations: How Gender Assigned At Birth Shapes Viewpoint Based Perceptual Disparities In Gender-Diverse People

    The purpose of this study was to examine disparities between personal beliefs and perceived societal ideologies about earning gendered traits and maintaining masculinity and femininity, with a focus on gender-diverse perspectives and the influence of gender identity on responses to social research. The current study recruited 334 gender-diverse participants to compare Viewpoint and Gendered Trait based on participant Gender Assigned at Birth, using twelve statements about earning and maintaining masculinity and femininity. The Traditional Egalitarian Sex Role (TESR) Inventory and Social Dominance Orientation (SDO) Scale were used as covariates which significantly contributed to the model. As expected, societal belief scores were significantly higher than personal belief scores, and masculinity scores were higher than femininity belief scores. Participants who were assigned female at birth (AFAB) displayed greater discrepancies in viewpoint-based agreement than participants assigned male at birth (AMAB), while AMAB participants displayed a greater discrepancy in trait-based agreement than AFAB participants. These results may indicate a discrepancy in the construct validity of social research surveys for gender-diverse populations and provoke further questions about the impact of expectations placed on people based on the gender they are assigned at birth

    Predicting Social Media Addiction: The Influence Of Paralinguistic Digital Affordances And Cognitive Processes On Social Media Use

    Social media has become an increasing staple in everyday life for numerous people. Yet, excessive and repetitive social media usage may become problematic, to the extent that the behavior takes the form of a psychological addiction. The primary objective of this study was to explore prospective factors that could predict the psychological dependency on social media applications, characterized as social media addiction (SMA). Paralinguistic Digital Affordances (PDAs) are “likes” one receives on social media and may predict SMA via the expected gratification attained when a PDA is received. Cognitive processes, assessed with a general executive functioning index and the n-back working memory task, may also predict SMA. A sample of 136 undergraduate psychology students completed an online questionnaire that assessed SMA, expected gratifications from PDAs, general executive functioning, and working memory via the n-back. Several multiple regression analyses were conducted to model the effect of predictors. The model entering all predictors simultaneously explained a significant amount of variance in SMA (p \u3c .001). Regression coefficients revealed that PDA gratification (p \u3c .001) and executive function (p = .017) were significant predictors of SMA. For PDA gratification, social gratification was a significant predictor (p =.010). For executive function, impulse control (p \u3c .001) and motivational drive (p = .005) were significant predictors. There were no significant two or three-way interactions among predictors. The results indicated that individuals who perceive higher gratification from PDAs, especially social gratification, were more likely to display SMA. Independent from PDAs, individuals who exhibited greater executive dysfunction, notably poor self-inhibition and motivation, were more likely to display SMA. This study offered valuable insight for factors that could influence the development of addictive social media use

    A Qualitative Study Exploring Best Practices And Applications Of Green, Eco, And Environmental Social Work In Canadian Social Work Practice

    Humanity and society are deeply connected to nature and the environment at their core. Through processes of colonization, the Industrial Revolution, urbanization, consumerism, and capitalism, people and societies have become increasingly disconnected from the natural environment. Introduced as a helping profession through the Industrial Revolution, social work began rooted in environment but quickly changed to understand human and societal wellbeing through the narrow scope of the social environment through the person-in-environment approach. Modern day issues of climate change, environmental degradation, environmental racism, and environmental justice movements have necessitated social work’s increased understanding of the natural environment. The purpose of this thesis is to help build an understanding of the current climate for green, eco, and environmental social work in Canada, including understanding diverse historical and current perspectives and experiences of the land and environment in connection to societal wellbeing. An exploratory qualitative study employing key informant interviews was utilized to help identify best practices and guidance for the direction of green, eco, and environmental social work in the areas of research, education, and practice at the micro and mezzo levels. In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven social work educators and practitioners well-versed in green, eco, and environmental social work through semi-structured key informant interviews. Interviewees were based both in the United States and in Canada. Following data transcription and analysis, the following key themes were identified: life purpose and meaning; deep environmental roots; impacts of nature; exploring connection; transforming social work education; emergent practices for green, eco, and environmental social work; and challenges/barriers to education and practice. These findings and implications are shared to strengthen the case for green, eco, and environmental social work integration into social work education, research, and practice

    Investigation Of Surfactant-Enhanced Oil Recovery In High Salinity And High Temperature (HSHT) Reservoir Conditions: A Case Study In The Bakken Formation

    This study investigates improved strategies for enhancing oil recovery (EOR) in challenging reservoir conditions by combining chemical surfactant flooding and data-driven optimization techniques. Given rising global energy demand and the depletion of conventional oil reserves, chemical EOR methods, particularly surfactant flooding, are gaining popularity for their ability to mobilize residual oil via mechanisms such as reducing interfacial tension, altering wettability, and inhibiting asphaltene formation. The research begins by examining the effectiveness of surfactant applications across various reservoir conditions, emphasizing the need for surfactants capable of withstanding challenging environments characterized by high temperatures, high salinity, and low permeability. Laboratory experiments demonstrated that zwitterionic surfactants significantly improved wettability in Middle Bakken core samples, reducing interfacial tension from 34.5 mN/m to as low as 8.9 × 10⁻¹ mN/m, resulting in an additional oil recovery of 16.4% during spontaneous imbibition tests. A spectrophotometric approach was then utilized to investigate the adsorption behavior of zwitterionic surfactants on Bakken minerals. Modeling adsorption with Langmuir isotherms revealed complex interactions influenced by salinity, temperature, and surfactant functional groups. To complement the experimental work, a hybrid approach was developed by combining a robust numerical reservoir model with data-driven predictive modeling. A detailed reservoir model of the Middle Bakken Member, incorporating multistage hydraulic fractures, was used to simulate surfactant Huff-n-Puff processes using CMG-STARS. This model captured the effects of parameters such as surfactant adsorption, concentration, and injection dynamics, providing a realistic representation of reservoir behavior. Concurrently, a Gradient Boosting Machine (XGBoost) was employed alongside Response Surface Methodology (RSM) for predictive modeling and optimization, achieving high predictive accuracy and enabling systematic sensitivity analysis of key operational parameters. The integration of numerical simulations with machine learning revealed a good correlation between actual and predicted oil recovery factors, underscoring the critical role of surfactant concentration and adsorption in optimizing recovery outcomes. This comprehensive methodology bridges traditional reservoir simulations with modern machine learning approaches, offering a flexible, accurate, and cost-effective strategy to optimize EOR processes. By exploring parameter sensitivities and optimizing surfactant injection strategies, this study provides valuable insights for enhancing operational efficiency and extending reservoir life, ultimately demonstrating the potential for advanced data-driven optimization to drive innovation in the petroleum industry

    Pesticide Presence And Distribution In A Cold Region Agricultural Basin

    This study investigates pesticide occurrence and distribution in the Mauvais Coulee Basin, a cold-region agricultural watershed in North Dakota, over three hydrologically distinct years. Initially focusing on neonicotinoids, the scope expanded to include herbicides, fungicides, and their metabolites. We hypothesized that pesticide concentrations are significantly influenced by hydroclimatic factors—particularly snowmelt and precipitation events—as well as by application timing and land use. In wetter years, dilution effects were expected to reduce pesticide concentrations, whereas drier years result in elevated levels due to lower water volumes. Results indicated limited neonicotinoid detection, primarily due to soil characteristics such as high clay content, organic matter, and cation exchange capacity, combined with the timing of pesticide applications. Conversely, Pyrasulfotole, Metolachlor ESA, 2,4-D, and Tebuconazole exhibited notable seasonal spikes influenced by soil adsorption and runoff events. Compared to studies in regions with sandy soils and shallow aquifers, neonicotinoid mobility in this basin was more limited due to higher clay content, deeper groundwater, and the presence of two to three clay horizons in observation wells. These conditions enhanced physicochemical interactions, particularly sorption to clay and soil organic matter, which provided binding sites that reduced pesticide transport through the vadose zone. These findings underscore the crucial role of soil properties and hydrological timing in pesticide transport, as well as the importance of continuous monitoring and adaptive environmental management strategies within cold-region watersheds. Ultimately, understanding these region-specific interactions provides fundamental guidance for protecting water quality and informing agricultural management policies in cold-climate agroecosystems under changing climatic conditions

    GLP-1 vs Gastric Bypass in Treating Obesity and Type 2 Diabetes

    Obesity and type 2 diabetes are interconnected global health challenges, contributing significantly to morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. This literature review compares the efficacy, safety, and applicability of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists and bariatric surgery as treatment options. A literature search with defined inclusion and exclusion criteria was conducted using PubMed and EBSCOhost from May to July 2024, resulting in 14 randomized controlled trials for evaluation. This literature review supports the efficacy of both GLP-1 receptor agonists, particularly semaglutide, and bariatric surgery as effective interventions for weight loss and glycemic control in patients with obesity and type 2 diabetes. Bariatric surgery leads to greater weight loss and diabetes remission but carries risks such as perioperative complications and long-term nutritional deficiencies. GLP-1 receptor agonists, though generally well-tolerated, show variability in efficacy and adherence due to gastrointestinal side effects. Personalized, patient-centered treatment strategies are essential, integrating clinical and lifestyle factors.
