Hybrid Energy Storage Systems For Renewable Integration: Combining Batteries, Supercapacitors, And Flywheels
Renewable energy integration into existing power grids is crucial for a sustainable future, but its intermittency poses technical challenges to grid stability and reliability. Hybrid Energy Storage Systems (HESS), combining lithium-ion batteries, supercapacitors, and flywheels, offer a promising solution by leveraging the complementary strengths of these technologies. This study explores optimal configurations of HESS using HOMER Pro software and a theoretical analysis approach to establish unified mathematical models for the three storages with constraints to address various operational scenarios, including normal operation, absence of renewable sources, and component failures. The proposed system integrates an Energy Management System (EMS) using a network switch and Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) with a supervisory control algorithm that combines Moving Average Window Width filtering with threshold-based cutoff logic to ensure stable power distribution. Lithium-ion batteries provide long-term energy storage, supercapacitors handle short-term fluctuations, and flywheels offer intermediate-term storage and frequency regulation. Key parameters monitored include battery voltage (650V–800V, capacity: 270 kWh), supercapacitor voltage (2.5V–3.0V, capacity: 265 kWh), flywheel voltage (400V–600V, capacity: 265 kWh), temperature ranges (-40°C to 65°C), and SOC limits for each storage device (battery: 0.1–0.8, supercapacitor: 0.2–0.95, flywheel: 0.15–0.9). The proposed algorithm successfully reduces false cutoff triggers, ensuring cutoffs occur only when parameters exceed thresholds. To further validate the Unified Mathematical Method, Homer Pro software is utilized for HESS system optimization, focusing on power flow simulation and grid interaction analysis. Grand Forks Area location (47.925259, -97.087752) in North Dakota, U.S.A was used in the Homer Pro Simulation. Results indicate that HOMER Pro’s optimization model aligns with the proposed Unified Mathematical Method (UMM), confirming the algorithm’s effectiveness in maintaining system stability and reliability while maximizing energy efficiency
Enhanced 4D Seismic Quantification Of CO2 Storage In A Saline Aquifer For Decarbonization: Advanced Rock Physics Modeling And Inversion Insights From The Sleipner Storage Complex
The 2015 Paris Accord sparked unprecedented global decarbonization to net-zero CO2 emissions. Carbon storage (CS), an important technology for addressing climate change, requires mandatory monitoring using 4D seismic approaches to demonstrate conformance and containment to meet regulatory requirements that demonstrate safety, performance understanding, and operational long-term stability. Although conventional amplitude- and velocity-based 4D seismic monitoring approaches detect CO2, they cannot adequately quantify CO2 saturation and pressure for conformance compliance validation. Therefore, this research investigated the potential of rock physics modeling to identify optimal CO2-saturation quantifiers and the potential of seismic inversion to link rock physics to accurately extract CO2 saturation from 4D seismic data using a novel pseudo-well assisted prestack seismic inversion approach deployed to the Sleipner storage dataset. The results showed that a patchy mixing (i.e. Brie, e = 4) offered a plausible balanced velocity-saturation calibration for CO2-brine substitution in the Utsira storage reservoir. The findings identified that lambda‐rho (λρ) depicted an effective/optimal CO₂ saturation quantifier in the storage complex, with the highest sensitivity and strongest correlation (R² \u3e 0.99) among elastic attributes. The inversion results suggested that CO2 is discernible in a range of fluid-sensitive impedances (i.e. Vp, AI, Vp/Vs, and λϱ) while showing a consistent decrease with injection time. The analyses demonstrated that λρ accurately quantified CO₂ saturation, strongly correlated with the simulation data (R² = 0.81), effectively matched containment maps, and showed moderate-to-low saturation uncertainty (±3–7.3%) from multi-attribute saturation-based assessments. This result significantly outperformed predictions using Vp, Vp/Vs (R² = 0.6), and AI (R² = 0.48). The results were also corroborated with a 2D-synthetic time-lapse impedance model, especially using λϱ, which matched respective 4D plume observations. The findings showed that S-wave velocity could sufficiently quantify effective stress/pressure changes with negligible impact of CO2 saturation. The findings can support safety and simulation validation accuracy that enhances containment and conformance assessment and facilitates the reliable measurement, monitoring, and verification of data for regulatory compliance. The findings reinforce 4D seismic quantification as a critical energy engineering tool for precise temporal reservoir analysis, enabling accurate evaluation of storage resource utilization, thereby enhancing CS as a sustainable climate mitigation technology
Negotiating Gender: A Qualitative Analysis Of Trans-Parasocial Relationships With Gen Z Social Media Users
The growth of social media and its functions as an online, international forum has been a growing topic of interest for researchers and the public alike. With the rise of native influencing and the incorporation of “organic” advertising, Social Media Influencers have grown in not just following and publicity with affiliate marketing and brand partnerships, but they have grown in social interest, as well. With the rise in technology and the introduction of Gen Z, who are digital natives, this has challenged previous understanding of online relationships, specifically with the expansion of Parasocial Relationship Theory to the online application of Trans-Parasocial Relationship Theory. While previous studies have explored how Trans-Parasocial Relationships have impacted consumer behavior and buyer interest of Social Media Users, this perhaps is not the extent Social Media Influencers’ reach. Influencers such as Andrew Tate, Drew Afualo, and Jordan Peterson have gained their followership negotiating societal topics, such as gender and gender values. This dissertation is a qualitative study that explored how Social Media Influencers (SMIs) impacted Gen Z Social Media Users’ (SMUs) gender values through Trans-Parasocial Relationships (TPR). 23 Gen Z participants between the ages of 18 and 25 participated in this study, completing a survey and in-depth interview. This study looked at how the participants were impacted by being digital natives, specifically with growing up with social media, their relationships with SMIs, and how SMIs impacted their gender values. This study revealed that SMIs, individually and collaboratively, had levels of effect in Gen Z SMUs, both individually and generationally, in items such as sexual orientation, sexual identity, gender roles, romantic relationships, and general gender values. This study suggests that along with other geographical factors that pertain to an individual’s frame of reference, that media, specifically SMIs, is a new international voice and community that can influence this generation’s negotiation of gender values

The instrumented North Dakota Citation Research Aircraft Obtained measurements of seedable convective clouds during three Intensive Operational Periods (IOPs) conducted in 2023 and 2024 over the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The Citation Research Aircraft was equipped with instruments for measuring GPS location and altitude, pressure, temperature, dew point temperature, and wind velocity, as well as set of cloud physics instruments.

Rehabilitation Not Punishment: Adults in Custody Learning Skills Needed to Survive In Society
Introduction: The U.S has one of the highest populations of incarcerated individuals in the world and must shift from the use of punishment to rehabilitation for these individuals (Huynh et al., 2015; Muñoz, 2019; Phelps & Aldrich, 2022). While in prison, these individuals are limited in their ability to participate in meaningful activities and lose skills needed to function in society (Lares & Montgomery, 2020). Occupational therapy assists individuals of a variety of populations engage in activities that are meaningful to them. The set of skills that occupational therapy has to offer results in a broad area of settings that could benefit from their services. One population that is often overlooked are adults who are in custody. Occupational therapists have skills to assist individuals to find ways to allow them to participate in things that are meaningful (Falardeau et al., 2015; Phelps & Aldrich, 2022; Watson et al., 2022).
Methodology: A literature review was conducted prior to beginning onsite experience on topics related to rehabilitation needs with adults in custody, occupational participation, evidenced- based practice in a prison setting, and the impact occupational therapy can have on meeting the population’s needs. The Ecology of Human Performance model was used to gain a holistic view and ensured the core concepts of occupational therapy were applied and embedded throughout this scholarly project. An onsite needs assessment was conducted through observation and conversation with residents, staff, and community members. The evidence was used to create a product to address the needs of the target population.
Results: This scholarly project resulted in the creation of four educational sessions on four topics (coping skills, communication, money management, and technology) that built upon the resources available within the site. It addressed different topics related to community living to support the process of reintegration for adults in custody. Each session includes slides, openended questions to prompt group discussions, and activities to apply concepts. This product addresses the needs of the population and supports the scope of OT practice within the prison setting. The project gave individuals the opportunity to learn new skills or build existing skills to reintegrate into society.
Conclusion and Significance: The product was positively received by stakeholders within the agency, including residents who attended the sessions, and met its intended outcome which was to enable learning that built or expanded on knowledge and skills to function in society. With a shift to a more rehabilitative environment within the state of North Dakota, this course has filled some of the gaps within the resources that are provided to guide individuals in their reintegration process
Addressing Sleep Within the Hand Therapy Practice Context
Background: Sleep is an essential pillar for health and well-being, yet this is not well understood by the general public. Many clients seen within the occupational therapy advanced practice context of hand therapy are at risk of sleep disturbances which will impact the sensorimotor, cognitive, and psychosocial components of the client. Sleep disturbances also negatively affect many aspects which are required for successful recovery and return to occupational engagement for those with conditions of the upper extremity. Addressing sleep within practice allows occupational therapy practitioners within the advanced practice context of hand therapy to promote occupational performance across all waking occupations while improving outcomes commonly assessed within the hand therapy context. Best practice within the occupational therapy advanced practice context of hand therapy necessitates sleep is addressed, a need for resources to assist occupational therapy practitioners in addressing sleep is present.
Purpose: The purpose of the project is to provide resources regarding delivery of sleep related services for occupational therapy practitioners within the advanced practice context of hand therapy. The project also aims to raise awareness of the importance of addressing sleep within occupational therapy practice.
Method: A review of the literature and collaboration with an occupational therapist with a certified hand therapy certification was conducted to identify a need. In person learning opportunities and a literature review of electronic databases were utilized to identify pertinent information to include in the product. This information was formatted according to the Ecological Model of Human Performance to ensure occupation remained the focus of the product (Dunn, 2017). Methods of addressing sleep within the occupational therapy advanced practice context of hand therapy were designed and modified in collaboration with an occupational therapist who is certified in hand therapy. Resources were then trialed in practice and disseminated accordingly.
Results: A variety of resources pertaining to the evaluation and intervention phases of the occupational therapy process were created to support the delivery of services targeting sleep within the occupational therapy advanced practice context of hand therapy.
Conclusion: A need for resources addressing provision of services for sleep is indicated by the literature within occupational therapy and the advanced practice context of hand therapy. An opportunity to progress the quality of occupational therapy services by addressing sleep in practice exists
SUPPORTING THE DEVELOPMENT OF EMOTION REGULATION FOR ENGAGEMENT IN OCCUPATION
Purpose: Many children with mental, behavioral, and neurodevelopmental health conditions internalize and externalize symptoms of anxiety, depression, and anger at higher rates compared to children without these conditions (Tajik-Parvinchi, 2021). Difficulties with emotion regulation may lead to heightened experiences of symptoms from mental, behavioral, and neurodevelopmental health conditions (Tajik-Parvinchi, 2021). Occupational therapy practitioners can support children with emotional dysregulation by using evidence-based best practices. The identified problem is the application of evidence-based emotion regulation evaluation and interventions to support children with difficulty in emotion regulation and their caregivers. The challenge of implementing evidence-based emotion regulation services is limited research and a lack of consensus to support the many different emotion regulation evaluations and interventions (Philpott-Robinson et al., 2023; Scaffa, 2019).
Methods: The program development process for Supporting the Development of Emotion Regulation for Engagement in Occupation began with an extensive literature review, needs assessment, skilled observation, and informal interviews with occupational therapy practitioners and billing staff. Evidence-based best practices were compared to interventions and evaluation methods being used at an outpatient clinic through the lens of the Model of Human Occupation. After the development of a gap analysis, emotion regulation, and caregiver education resources were created, trialed, and edited to best support occupational therapy practitioners in treating children with emotional dysregulation.
Results: Resources were developed to support occupational therapy practitioners in treating children with emotion regulation. The resources included an emotion regulation process, screening tools, various examples of interventions, examples of goals, caregiver coaching tools, and developmental milestones. Goal attainment scaling was used as an outcome measure for the project to determine the effectiveness of the project resources.
Conclusion: The emotion regulation and caregiver education resources provided occupational therapy practitioners with a guide to enhance consistency in service delivery and increase confidence in delivering emotion regulation and caregiver education services
THE IMPACT OF THE PROVISION OF OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY SERVICES FOR ONCOLOGY CARE PATIENTS WITHIN THE INTERPROFESSIONAL TEAM
Purpose: There is growing evidence to suggest that occupational and other therapy interventions can play a role in positively affecting the outcomes of individuals with cancer and cancer survivors. Occupational therapists can address peripheral neuropathy, lymphedema, pain, fatigue, cognitive deficits, and psychosocial issues (Baxter et al., 2017; Stout et al., 2021; Vining Radomski et al., 2021). Through appropriate assessment, intervention, education, and discharge planning, occupational therapists and other rehabilitation specialties can attempt to collaboratively change the outcome of an individual’s cancer course (Munoz et al., 2015). Individuals with cancer and cancer survivors have difficulty engaging in their own life in meaningful ways due to a multitude of physical and psychosocial causes (Baxter et al., 2017). There is also evidence suggesting providers do not know when to refer patients to rehabilitation services and individuals with cancer do not know when rehabilitation would be appropriate for them (Rijpkema et al., 2018; Stout et al, 2021).
Methodology: A model-driven literature review was completed regarding occupational therapy’s role in oncology care. The interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP) model (American Occupational Therapy Association, 2024) was utilized to guide the review of literature, followup onsite needs assessment, collaboration with providers, literary comparison, and overall development of the project and handbook, which will be the product of this scholarly project. The occupational therapy theoretical framework, person-environment-occupation (PEO) model (Law et al., 1996) was used as a secondary model to guide the aspects listed previously and to inform the development of the patient aspects of the handbook. The handbook will be used to enhance the role of occupational therapy and other rehabilitation specialties within an interprofessional oncology team.
Results: The handbook Quality of Life During Oncology Care: A Therapy Guide for Patients was created to address the current gap in care for individuals with cancer. This handbook addresses a lack of referrals from providers to oncology rehabilitation teams and lack of provider and patient knowledge regarding oncology rehabilitation care, as well as numerous areas for patients including how to determine if rehabilitation is appropriate, education regarding secondary conditions, a home therapy program, and numerous self-management techniques. The handbook was delivered by the author to the interprofessional team in a variety of mediums to allow for transferability and continuity among interprofessional members.
Conclusion: It is anticipated that the scholarly project and handbook will assist in the provision of rehabilitation services for individuals with cancer and cancer survivors. Occupational therapists and other providers on the interprofessional team will be better equipped to serve patients, and patients may have better outcomes with the provision of this handbook
FACILITATING ENGAGEMENT IN MEANINGFUL OCCUPATIONS THROUGH NATURE-BASED EXPERIENCES
Background: Many children, especially those living in urban areas, are spending less time in nature than ever before which is decreasing their engagement in meaningful occupations such as sleep, play, education, social participation, and activities of daily living. Interacting with nature can improve children’s emotional regulation, development, attention span, mental health, and overall well-being. It is important that children have access to nature and its benefits to ensure they are reaching their full potential in life. One method to improve children’s access to nature is providing them with nature-based activities that can be modified or adapted for those living in urban areas and that they can complete with their caregivers, friends, and family members in their home environment. Many children would benefit from the facilitation of nature-based activities in their everyday lives.
Purpose: The purpose of this scholarly project is to increase children’s interactions with nature and improve their engagement in their meaningful occupations through the use of nature-based activities that can be modified and adapted for children living in urban areas.
Methods: A literature review was conducted using online databases such as PubMed, EBSCOHost, CINHAL, Google Scholar and OTSearch. The Ecology of Human Performance (EHP) model was used throughout the entire process of this scholarly project.
Conclusion: Children can receive many benefits from interacting with nature on a regular basis. However, they need the resources and access to nature to be able to obtain the positive effects nature has to offer.
