The Role of Almonds in Exercise Recovery and Athletic Performance

    Get PDF
Objectives: During exercise, many trained athletes and physically active adults experience symptoms of exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD). The effects of EIMD can cause limitations in athletic performance and increased duration of exercise recovery. Nutritional interventions have shown results in improving the duration of recovery. However, there are few studies completed on common food items. This review aims to examine the role of almonds in exercise recovery and athletic performance. Methods: A literature search was conducted utilizing Google Scholar, PubMed, CINAHL Ultimate, and reference hand searching. The search parameters included the dietary intervention of almonds for trained athletes and physically active adults in exercise recovery and performance. Studies were excluded if there was a combined intervention, a population other than young and middle-aged adults, or if they were unavailable in English. Of the 29 articles that were screened, six articles matched the inclusion criteria. Results: A total of six articles were reviewed to determine the effects of almonds on exercise recovery and performance. Four of the six articles were randomized controlled trials (RCTs), one was a randomized crossover study, and one was a parallel group-randomized trial (GRT). All experimental trials found that almond consumption enhanced athletic performance. Three studies found that increased almond intake reduced pain and alleviated muscle soreness. Four studies found similar results in reduced serum markers of muscle damage due to almond consumption. Two studies found that almond intake reduces certain inflammatory markers. The studies differed in the amounts of almonds consumed and the timing of exercise. Conclusions: These findings suggest that increased almond intake may reduce symptoms of EIMD and enhance athletic performance. However, there are limited studies available with a primary focus on almond interventions for exercise recovery. More studies with larger populations are needed to confirm the results found using almonds as a dietary intervention further

The Fruits of Our Journey are Underfoot

This piece includes images of blue mountain asters, berries, white lodges, stars, and pink clouds to suggest the enlightenment of a lifelong journey. From the artist: This painting is designed to illustrate a soul’s pilgrimage as it travels amongst all the elements, challenges, and experiences on this earth. We are believed to be a soul inside an organic mass, or “spirit having a human experience”. As life’s journey is created within our thoughts, it begins with a single step in the direction of our choices. We often believe that happiness and inner peace are the destination, but as we progress in life, we discover that they are the fruits of our journey. From the bottom of the traveler, three blue mountain asters are illustrated with five sets of berries within a dark green groundwork. We are all flowers in God’s Garden; a mountain will always maintain its integrity long before and after humans. The berries signify that we will all experience both bitter and sweet with each step in our travels. A color transition from black to red denotes the mystery of our final destination as we walk among our people during our journey. 4 white lodges rest upon a blue foundation to represent Mother Earth\u27s sacredness and honor within these four directions. An image of a muted orange sun becomes the backdrop to the traveling soul, suggesting the presence of enlightenment on this life-long journey. Rolling pink clouds behind the sun separate the ochre-colored sky filled with 7 blue circles/stars and the morning star above. The pink clouds remind us always to love where we are in our lives; if we don’t love where we are, change our direction. An ochre-colored sky symbolizes life, vitality, and eternity among the heavens; the blue stars above serve as the celestial light that radiates from our ancestors. “We will receive the fruits of our journey with every step and path we choose.” Featured in the exhibition, Plain of Stars: An exhibition to uplift, acknowledge, and celebrate Indigenous students.https://commons.und.edu/native-art/1110/thumbnail.jp

Effects of Exercise on ADHD Symptoms in Children and Adolescents

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of exercise compared to traditional treatment methods on symptoms of ADHD in children, such as improved executive function. A systematic literature review utilizing PubMed, CINAHL, and UND Medical Library resulted in a total of 113 articles, with 15 articles meeting inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results were filtered to studies within the past 5 years. Studies suggest that physical activity could be used as an adjunct to current treatment. Results of various studies support this concept as children showed an improvement in attention, a decrease in impulsivity and hyperactivity, and an improvement in overall interpersonal relationships. There is little known about the types and intensity of physical activity required to see positive results; however, activities ranging from aerobic exercise to standing vs sitting in a classroom have shown improvement in ADHD symptoms. Primary symptoms of ADHD include inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. As a result, individuals with ADHD may struggle with low self-esteem, difficulty in school or work, and troubled relationships. Traditional treatment for this disorder includes behavior therapy, medication, and counseling. With the documented mental health benefits in addition to overall health benefits, exercise should be encouraged for all patients with ADHD in addition to their current treatment. Incorporating exercise into a treatment plan for children with ADHD does improve physical and mental health. Current treatment for ADHD involves medication, behavior therapy, and counseling, but acute exercise and regular physical activity should be part of the treatment plan for everyone

During the latter half of 2024, with the United States amid unchartered waters, the Revised and Expanded Edition of Picking the President was assembled (like the first edition had been in 2017) to promote understanding of the Electoral College. To this end, Part I (“The First Edition of Picking the President”) consists of the first edition’s Preface, Introduction, and fourteen essays. Part II (“New Perspectives on the Electoral College”) unveils a new Prelude, a new Introduction, and fifteen new essays. Part III (“Resources”) features fifty items, including the complete debate on the subject at the Constitutional Convention, which illuminate the creation, ratification, and early evolution of the United States’ presidential election system. In providing an expansive view of the Electoral College, the Revised and Expanded Edition of Picking the President aims to promote understanding of this system as the United States heads still further into the unknown. An Archaeology of the Red River of the North

    Get PDF
An Archaeology of the Red River of the North offers an expansive survey of the indigenous cultures and peoples in the region of the Red River from the recession of Lake Agassiz around 9000 years ago to the intrusion of the Europeans. Beginning with an overview of the practice of regional archaeology and a justification for its pursuit, Michael Michlovic uses a traditional culture-historical sequence as a framework to incorporate archaeological studies from the late nineteenth century to the present time. Relevant research in fields such as ethnohistory, ethnography, radiometric dating, paleoecology, and geomorphology are used throughout the presentation. Dozens of individual sites and survey projects are summarized and take their place in an overview of the characteristic features of past times, from the earliest hunting and gathering cultures to later farming societies. Michael Michlovic is Emeritus Professor of Anthropology at Minnesota State University Moorhead, where he taught from 1975 to 2015. His field studies focused on the Red and Sheyenne River Valleys of northwestern Minnesota and eastern North Dakota. He served previously as president of the Council for Minnesota Archaeology, and as a member of the Minnesota state review board for the National Register of Historic Places. He is a past editor of The Minnesota Archaeologist, and currently is on the board of the Minnesota Archaeological Society. He is co-author with G.R. Holley of the The Digital Press at the University of North Dakota volume, Archaeological Cultures of the Sheyenne Bend.https://commons.und.edu/press-books/1032/thumbnail.jp
