The Electoral College in the American Mind Dataset, September 13-17, 2024
No full textThe dataset was generated by a study titled “The Electoral College in the American Mind,” the purpose of which was to better understand people’s thoughts and feelings about the Electoral College. The study’s survey instrument was a questionnaire that posed thirty Electoral College-themed questions: twenty-eight of the questions were written in a multiple-choice format; two were written in an open-ended format. The dataset consists of the aggregate responses to the former, cross-tabulated by the respondents’ demographic characteristics.
The study was administered online by a national firm, SurveyUSA, from September 13, 2024, through September 17, 2024. Using a web-based format, SurveyUSA administered the study’s questionnaire to 1,500 adults in the United States, using a non-probability sample provided by Lucid Holdings LLC of New Orleans. The pool of adult survey respondents was weighted to US Census American Community Survey targets for gender, age, race, education, and home ownership

Response Surface Analysis of Biopolymer Gel Performance in Fractured High Temperature Formations
No full textThis study investigates the performance of a hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC)–based biopolymer gel for fracture conformance control in high-temperature geothermal reservoirs using a statistically driven experimental framework. Laboratory core-flooding experiments were conducted on fractured limestone and sandstone samples from the Deadwood Formation under controlled thermal and chemical conditions, with temperatures reaching 160 °C. The effects of temperature, gel formulation salinity, and lithology on key performance indicators—including residual resistance factor (RRF), resistance factor (RF), gel extrusion pressure gradient (GEPG), and heat retention—were quantified. Response Surface Methodology (RSM) was applied using Minitab to capture variable interactions and develop predictive models for gel behavior under geothermal conditions. Results indicate strong thermal and chemical resilience of the HEC-based gel, particularly in limestone cores, where RRF values exceeded 10⁸ and heat retention approached 80% at elevated temperatures. The statistical models highlight the dominant influence of lithology and salinity on treatment effectiveness and provide a practical framework for optimizing gel-based conformance treatments in fractured geothermal systems

Using TinyLev acoustic levitator at low temperatures to generate atmospheric ice crystals (obstacles to hypersonic flights)
No full textAtmospheric clouds contain supercooled water droplets, frozen droplets, and ice crystals ranging in size from a few nm to 100’s of µm. These elements form crystal chain aggregates of varying lengths, though their aggregation process remains unknown. Hypersonic flights, which travel at speeds at least five times faster than sound, gain excessive momentum. As a result, tiny atmospheric ice crystal aggregates can cause damage to the vehicle’s nose cone and exterior. However, these atmospheric ice crystals are not well studied and require advanced laboratory facilities for analysis. At the Aerosol Engineering Lab at UND, atmospheric ice crystals are generated using a TinyLev acoustic levitator combined with liquid nitrogen (N₂). These ice crystals are produced to drop in front of the shockwave (inside Purdue’s 3-inch shock tube) to study their behavior in a hypersonic environment.
