Family Welfare: Implications for Child Development in Nigeria

    Get PDF
Most industrialized nations of the world have identified child abuse and neglect broadly as a social problem warranting state intervention. Although parents bear primary responsibility for raising children and ensuring that their needs are met, the state may intervene in family life when harm occurs or risks are present. Yet, despite the best efforts of all involved, service provision has been open to criticism for either failing to protect children adequately or, alternatively, intruding too much into the private realm of the family. Moreover, even though child abuse is a recognized social problem, the best efforts of child welfare systems have not stopped children from being abused (physically, sexually), neglected, or placed in vulnerable and risk-filled circumstances. The study examines the provision of Family Welfare Institutional services and its implications for child development in Nigeria. The provision of institutional childcare services as a component of child welfare services for children without parental or kinship care is fundamental for every community service and development. Child protection is one of the key elements of social work practice which covers both family-based and institutional care. The study reveals the many challenges that Family welfare institution face when handling child protection services. They include: poor staff capacity, inadequate professional social workers to promote counseling as an integral intervention measure to child abuse victims; and weak collaborative relationship with the Police and the court to process offenders, and matters of child right violations. The study recommends that manpower resources and capacity of family welfare institutions should be enhanced through regular recruitment of professional social workers to help the advocacy of protecting vulnerable children in Nigeria

This study was carried out to determine the potential of adding Fresh skinned papaya pulp (FSP) into yoghurt for the improvement of the functional properties of yoghurt and the resulting effects of adding PPF on the physicochemical and sensory properties of the product during a 30 days’ storage period at 6°C. Yoghurt samples A (Control), B, C, D and E were respectively produced at 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% of milk incorporated with papaya fruit. Incorporation of PPF into the yogurt samples resulted in an increase in pH, proteins and carbohydrates and a reduction in titratable acidity as compared to the control. The microbial analysis showed no presence of coliform bacteria. The sensory evaluation result demonstrated significant differences in all the organoleptic attributes analyzed. Sample C with 10% incorporated papaya had the highest overall acceptability score

Factors Influencing Male Involvement in the Utilization of Family Planning in Chato District, Geita Region Tanzania

    Get PDF
Tanzania has one of the highest Total Fertility Rate in Africa of 5.2 and a 32% level of Family planning utilization. Low involvement of men in family planning is one of the factors influencing its utilization in many African societies due to male dominance in decision making including Family planning issues . Family planning is known to prevent maternal deaths, but some cultural norms, and service delivery factors makes this difficult to achieve. The study was conducted to document current level of Family planning (FP) utilization and identify  possible underlying factors influencing male involvement in utilization of family planning in Chato District, Geita Tanzania. Descriptive cross-sectional study was employed using both quantitative and qualitative techniques. Questionnaires were administered to 496 participants in 4 wards of Chato District. Focused Group Discussions and Key Informant interviews were conducted from each of these areas. Data analysis was done using SPSS. Using chi-square, bivariable analysis was done to assess the effect of individual factors on FP utilization. Multiple Logistic regression was then run to assess for the effect of potential confounding variables. The proportion of men utilizing FP was found to be 17.5%, which suggest that, there is low support from men on utilization of family planning in Chato District due to many factors. The most influential factors to male involvement in utilization of family planning was revealed to be distance to family planning clinics, men’s approval on spouse use of family planning services and side effects after family planning methods use. Due to the fact that men disapprove the use of family planning, the study recommends the need for FP programs to adopt approaches that integrate men into existing family planning services in order to improve FP use and its sustainability. Distance to FP service delivery points and side effects were services related factors influencing FP use, this means reproductive health barriers cannot be addressed in the absence of accessible health services and medical knowledge and skills across all Service Delivery Point

Reality of Urbanization and Urban Master Plan of Vientiane Capital, Lao PDR: Issues and Prospects

    Get PDF
This study aims to identify the issues and prospects of Vientiane Urban Master Plan (VUMP) development processes under the urbanized conditions in the capital city of Lao PDR. The existing VUMP within the last decade has been brought into account in consideration both data collection and discussion processes. This study mainly focuses on identifying the characteristics and the implementation directions of the VUMP. In order to clarify these research questions, the implementation data from the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT), project investments data from the Ministry of Planning and Investment (MPI), and in-depth interview technique in the related sectors are utilized. From these data, the comparison analysis is applied crucially to learn the crossed dimensions between the existing VUMP and the implementation effectiveness.   Regarding the results, the implementation processes and administrative sectors are the paralleled issues in driving of VUMP. Therefore, this study suggests the possible solutions with combination of top-down and bottom-up approaches in the implementations. The top-down approach deals with strategic development direction, defined by the master plans. It is suggested that in the framework of implementing the master plans, economic, environmental, financial, and norm of social instruments should be applied in combination with regulative devices, as the later solely could be ineffective. On the other hand, the bottom-up approach emphasized on community empowerment and inclusion of people at the grass-root level into development processes. In order to move forward the collective actions in implementation of the VUMP, it is crucial to encourage the common understanding, share directions, and collaborations with various sectors

The present study was designed to examine the relationship between phonological working memory, IQ and reading ability, through the mediation phonological awareness skills. Two hundred kindergarten children’s (100 boys & 100 girls; age ranged between 4 and 5 years) (M age =4.38), from 23 kindergartens attached to private schools in Muscat Governorate, Oman. The Phonological awareness skills was measured with “Phonological Awareness Test- Second Edition (PAT-2)” [34], the “Comprehensive Test of Phonological Processing (CTOPP-2)” and phonological working memory [35]. The IQ was measured by Otis Lennon [36]. Mediational path analysis supported our hypothesized model. Result indicate that phonological working memory indirectly links to the reading ability of children, through phonological awareness skills, there was no direct effect of intelligence on phonological awareness, It was conclude that Memory, who have higher use more phonological awareness skills and their children show higher reading ability

    Get PDF
In this study, the composite orthotropic annular rotating part of carbon fibre reinforced polymer is investigated statically. Rotating structure is modeled in CATIA V5 and meshed in HyperMesh 13.0 to be analytically simulated in ANSYS 16.1 APDL. The static behaviour of the radial, circumferential and longitudinal stresses and deformations are obtained and analysed at six various angular velocities up to 2727.27 rad/s. It is noted that the simulated magnitudes of the hoop stress are higher than that of the radial and longitudinal stresses. However, the maximum displacements are found to be in the longitudinal and radial directions respectively. In addition, these stresses are observed to increase as the angular velocities increased
