    Repellent Activity of Extracts of Black Pepper, Black Seeds, Garlic and White Cumin Against Red Flour Beetle

    Many insects are pests of standing crops and stored grains that cause lot of damage and economic losses every year. Commonly these are controlled by synthetic compounds that are unsafe for humans and environment. Certain parts of plants are used for their repellent activity against insect pests of stored grains. In this context, the present study was planned to investigate the repellent activity of extracts of black pepper, black seeds, garlic and white cumin against red flour beetle that cause a huge damage to stored food crops. Repellent activity was tested using multiple concentrations of these extracts. Results of the present study concluded that 2 plant extracts have shown effective repellent activity against red flour beetle. The most effective extract was garlic followed by black pepper in various concentrations. Both were more effective at 1.5 % concentration. It is concluded in this study that these plants are natural sources of repellent compounds and hence are a potential source of biological insect repellents

    The influence of iron on lead sulphide(PbS)  and Copper Sulphide (CuS)  thin films deposited on glass substrates via successive ionic layer adsorption (SILAR) Technique using lead acetate, Pb(CH 3 COO) 2, Cupric Acetate Cu(CH 3 COO) 2,   thioacetamide ( S 2 H 5 NS),  Iron (II) Chloride dehydrate(Fe Cl 2. 2H 2 O), ethanol and ammonia by  in alkaline medium annealed between  283K and 500K was investigated.   The structural and morphological studies were performed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) Analysis and  scanning electron microscopy(SEM) respectively.  The XRD showed  films of cubic  crystalline   PbS thin films, cubic and face-centred crystalline  PbSFe thin films, cubic CuS thin film, hexagonal Cu 2 S thin films and cubic and hexagonal crystalline natured CuSFe thin films with the preferential (111),(002)(004) (311) orientations. From the structural and morphological  studies, the iron lead sulphide,  and iron copper sulphide thin films can  be good materials for baby   incubation in neo-natal unit of hospitals and adapted in Ebonyi State University Abakaliki - Nigeria due to their new characteristics

    Survey of Hypocalcaemia Frequency in District Lahore, Pakistan

    Calcium is important for regulation of various physiological functions like bones, teeth, different types of muscular movements, blood pressure, body growth and maintenance. But continuous calcium deficiency may cause hypocalcaemia in which major cause is insufficient intake of calcium along with other pathological states, financial constraints and lack of general public awareness about the significance and physiological role of calcium. Statistical analysis on the basis of current survey indicates that females remain malnourished and suffer from hypocalcaemia more than males. That’s why; there is urgent need of organized efforts for general public awareness from government and private platforms. Moreover, future researchers should introduce better diagnosis techniques and economical dietary sources and treatments to reduce frequency of hypocalcaemia

    Dynamic Evolution of Bitterness Units in Beer Worts: Modeling and Concerns

    Beer bitterness is reported in International Bitterness Units (IBU), which is the concentration (in ppm) of iso-alpha-acids in the product. Such acids result from the isomerization of alpha-acids originally found in hops which is carried out by boiling the beer wort. This concentration can be measured by HPLC, which led, in the past, to some empirical predictions for the effects of boil time and wort density on the dynamic evolution of IBU in barley worts. Since HPLC is an expensive and time onerous procedure, the organizations devoted to the standardization of procedures in the brewing industry established protocols that indirectly evaluate the IBU by spectrophotometry. This work investigated the dynamic evolution of IBU values as a function of the wort density when evaluated by this standard procedure, which involves the extraction with iso-octane and the UV absorbance measurement in a spectrophotometer. Three barley worts were prepared with dry malt extract (DME) having specific gravities (SG) of 1.030, 1.040 and 1.050. These worts and a fourth sample constituted of distilled water (SG = 1.000) had their pH buffered in 5.2 and were boiled under atmospheric pressure. During the boiling step, Czech Saaz hop pellets were added according to a time schedule (1, 3, 5, 10, 25, 40 and 60 minutes). All reactions were conducted in small (500 ml) aluminum reactors with triplicates for each isomerization time.  Finally, the IBU of the samples were measured and used to fit non-linear empirical models for the IBU evolution in the wort, based on a maximum likelihood statistical criterion along with deterministic optimization methods. Results indicated that IBU values, evaluated by the standard procedure, rise to their final value within a few minutes, instead of one hour, which is traditionally assumed

    Aspects of Clean Energy Transition in the Island of Crete, Greece

    Clean energy transition in islands is of paramount importance for climate change mitigation. Various aspects in de-carbonization of the island of Crete, Greece have been investigated in order to examine the difficulties in replacing fossil fuels with benign energy resources in energy generation and in transportation. De-carbonization in different socio-economic sectors in Crete has been studied in order to find out the feasibility of de-carbonizing them as well as the sustainable energy technologies that can be used for achieving that. The results indicated that the sectors of electricity generation and heat and cooling production can be de-carbonized rather easily in the short to medium term using the abundant renewable energies in Crete. Transportation inside the island can be de-carbonized in the medium to long-term replacing the old conventional vehicles with new electric vehicles. More difficult is the de-carbonization in the transportation to and from Crete, via aircrafts and ships, since the required technologies are not mature and reliable yet while the necessary fuels are not produced in large scale in a cost-efficient way. De-carbonization in this sector can be achieved only in long-term while various technological breakthroughs are required for that. It is concluded that the clean energy transition in Crete is technically and economically feasible in some sectors while in others could be achievable only in the long-term supported by new technological developments.  The results could be useful to policy makers for the creation and realization of a clean energy transition plan in the island of Crete that is necessary for complying with the EU target for carbon neutrality in the continent by 2050

    Designing geotechnical projects requires greater attention due to the importance of sustaining the building and transmission of loads to the ground. In this way, geotechnologies have been developed toward guaranteeing security and lowering cost for a building, as some methods of soil improvement to make shallow foundations feasible. The objective of this work is to present selected methods of sandy soils improvement in Northeastern Brazil, verifying the most common compaction columns in the region. Furthermore, this work demonstrates the technical feasibility of a new method of compacting sandy soils: terra-probe without material introduction. As a result of applying this technique, the treated massif obtained an increase in resistance and, consequently, an increase in its load capacity, as well as reduced the foundations settlements significantly

    Architecture and Infectious Diseases: Setting-up a Multipurpose Isolation Facility in Nigerian Hospitals

    The high and continuous spread of infectious disease such as Corona virus (COVID-19) has affected public health globally. The preparedness of hospitals in the face of this situation is a problem in the Nigerian context, hospitals were faced with the problems of lack of viral containment spaces to isolate suspected cases and treat the infected patients. This research aims at exploring the design requirements and configurations of a multipurpose infectious disease isolation centre in Nigerian hospitals with a view to develop a framework for setting-up of infectious disease isolation facility in Nigerian hospitals. The research objectives are as follows: (1) To identify the functional spaces in isolation centres of Nigerian hospitals, (2) To determine the principles of configuration and design considerations in setting up of isolation centres in Nigerian hospitals and (3) To develop a framework or a model for the setting-up of IDIC in Nigerian hospitals. The above objectives were achieved through the employment of a qualitative research approach. An in-depth interview was conducted, the data was analysed using the thematic coding analysis. Results from qualitative analysis were reported in tables and narrative report, content analysis was also conducted. The result of the analysis reveals that an isolation centre should be zoned into four parts, namely: (1) Triage, (2) Green zone (safe zone), (3) Yellow zone (Semi-safe) and (4) Red zone (danger zone). The suspect bay should be in single rooms and that no more than one suspected patient should be in the same room. There is need for a molecular laboratory in the facility. There is need for negative pressure rooms for respiratory infections. The use of high efficiency particulate Air-condition (HEPA) is necessary for decontamination of indoor air before discharge. There is also a need for large open space to cater for watery diseases like cholera

    Digital Transformation Frameworks - Applicable for Disruptive Technologies?

    This paper has a two-fold aim to analyze the need of the digital transformation framework, and to understand the its impact on disruptive technologies by means of a structured review of the literature. The results of this research reveal that the digital transformation demand has developed a lot and there is seen a growing interest of its implementation in digital era of business and technology. However, results derived from an in-depth review show that there is a dire need for DT in developing countries and for more collaboration between researchers and practitioners. The paper highlights that business and digital marketing is fragmented due to disruptive technologies and shared platforms and furthermore outlines the strategies of digital transformation as a tool to be implemented among all new enabling technologies. To sum up all, it is concluded that without any doubt digital transformation is proven as tailored strategic option to impact creation, value and delivery of products and projects in almost every industry. These impacts have led to the improvement of digital marketing strategies, online business world along with employment of a variety of new successful business models, crucial to be successful in today’s and future competitive digital era demanding for innovation

    Renewable Energies Use for Hydrogen Production Powering Fuel Cell Vehicles in the Island of Crete, Greece

    The possibility of using indigenous renewable energies for electrolytic hydrogen production in Crete has been investigated. Hydrogen can be used for de-carbonization of the transportation sector in the island replacing all existing conventional vehicles with fuel cell electric vehicles. The required H2 has been estimated as well as the electricity needed for its production via water electrolysis. Solar and wind energy is currently used for electricity generation with solar-PV systems and wind farms in Crete generating a significant amount of the island’s electricity consumption. The size and the cost of the solar-PV systems and the wind farms required for electricity generation, needed in electrolytic H2 production, have been estimated. The hydrogen required for powering all fuel cell vehicles in Crete has been estimated at 53,037 tonsH2/year and the electricity required for its electrolytic production at 3,826,563 MWh. The size of the solar-PV systems generating the electricity required in water electrolysis is estimated at 2,710 MWp while their cost at bil. 3.25.  The size of the wind farms generating the electricity required in water electrolysis is estimated at 1,501 MWel while their cost at bil. 1.50.  It is concluded that local renewable energies can be used for electrolytic H2 production in Crete although their installation cost is high. The results can be used for the creation of a roadmap regarding the de-carbonization of the island’s transportation sector

    Arduino Controlled Filling Yarn Presenter of Modern Rapier Loom

    This paper is concerned with the application of filling yarn presenter with the help of Arduino mega controlled by various analog and digital inputs. Modern Rapier looms are more advanced in every aspect of production than conventional power looms. Quickstep mechanism is used in multicolored weft insertion. In the current project we introduce a prototype of servo-motor-controlled filling yarn presenter as well as a hypothesis has been shown in order to maximizing the number of filling yarn presenter. We took advantage of Arduino-based programmable circuit board (PCB) along with necessary components such as keypads, potentiometers, breadboards, servo motors, LCD, metal wires and plastic pipes. The integration of all these parts results in a prototype based on this redefined mechanism which is able to manually control 4 individual colored weft yarns according to their sequence that also can be inputted manually
