Ontogenetic shifts in bait preference and foraging behavior of invasive Pterygoplichthys spp.

    No full text
The invasive suckermouth catfish (Pterygoplichthys spp.), native to South America, poses ecological threats in non-native freshwater systems. However, effective natural baits for its control remain understudied. This study evaluated the behavioral responses of three size classes (<10 cm, 25 cm, >35 cm) to two baits—Lumbricus rubellus (earthworm) and Loligo sp. (squid) and assessed bait durability via protein and fat leaching over 15 hours. Using 32 CCTV-monitored trials, significant ontogenetic differences were observed (p < 0.05): juveniles responded most actively (10 and 9 approaches), adults avoided earthworms but approached squid moderately (5 times), and larvae showed intermediate responses. Though earthworms induced a faster mean response time (20:19 min), it was not statistically different from squid (p = 0.79). Biochemical analysis revealed superior nutrient retention in L. rubellus (protein: 10.78%, lipid: 9.90%) compared to rapid leaching in squid. The findings suggest that L. rubellus is a highly effective bait for catfish due to its strong chemosensory attraction and nutrient stability, supporting size-specific baiting strategies for targeted management of this invasive species. The invasive suckermouth catfish (Pterygoplichthys spp.), native to South America, poses ecological threats in non-native freshwater systems. No full text
Floating net cage activities produce waste in the form of uneaten feed and metabolic waste that contain nitrogen and phosphorus, which can promote excessive growth of phytoplankton, leading to eutrophication. This research analyzes the excess nitrogen in feed provision in the floating net cage at Laut Tawar Lake. The difference in the amount of N in the feed and the amount of N in the fish represents the amount of N as the excess N in floating net cage activities. Feed samples of 7 different types and fish samples were randomly taken from 3 floating net cage locations, namely One-one, Toweren, and Kebayakan. Based on the results, the average N concentration in the feed used was 6.79% for tilapia and 6.71% for carp. The average N concentration in the tilapia is 7.71±0.61% and in the carp samples is 6.42±1.67%. The tilapia farming contributed N to the waters at a rate of 0.85 kg/m2 over a 4-month, while the carp floating net cage contributed N at a rate of 0.72 kg/m2 over a 5-month. The results indicate that floating net cage activities in Laut Tawar Lake produce N waste to the lake waters amounting to 0.36 kg/m2/month or 11.94 grams/m2/day.Floating net cage activities produce waste in the form of uneaten feed and metabolic waste that contain nitrogen and phosphorus, which can promote excessive growth of phytoplankton, leading to eutrophication. No full text
This study aimed to examine the gonadal characteristics and reproductive strategies of the green mussel Perna viridis in Banyuurip Bay, Java Sea, Gresik Regency, Indonesia, with a focus on oocyte size, gonad morphology, and seasonal variations in reproductive activities. Micromorphological and field observations analysis revealed that the gonad, the site of gametogenesis in female mussels, is characterized by an orange colour. In contrast, in males, it is creamy white. During gametogenesis, the diameter of the oocyte increases from 0.28 to 0.60 μm at the oogonia stage and to 1.17 to 3.19 μm when it becomes a vitellogenic oocyte. Significant daily and seasonal variations are observed, which may contribute to high environmental pressure on the population. The green mussel population continues to grow despite ecological disturbances, including food scarcity and high levels of pollution, which are exerting pressure on the population. The significantly smaller oocyte size compared to other populations was identified as a potential adaptation to these challenges. These findings underscore the importance of understanding reproductive strategies to support sustainable mussel cultivation and effective management, particularly in areas characterized by fluctuating environmental conditions.
