Investigating gender stereotypes in elementary education
Get PDFEducation is home to one of America's most pervasive gender stereotypes. A disproportionately low frequency of male elementary school teachers has reinforced such stereotypes. This study was designed to investigate gender stereotypes further. Forty-three undergraduate students answered questions assessing their attitudes and
views towards four different fictitious teachers. The teacher descriptions were varied by gender and competency (incompetent versus competent). Competent teachers were rated significantly higher across all
measures including emotional supportiveness and subject-area competency, while teacher gender produced no significant differences on any of the measures. However, participant gender interacted with teacher competency significantly for leadership ratings. The findings do not support the bulk of previous findings on stereotypes in education. Implications and future research ideas are discussed

Physiological measures of math anxiety as a function of wording
No full textResearch on the physiological effects of math anxiety is inconsistent. In this study, an electroencephalograph (EEG) machine was used to measure the cortical activity of 6 volunteer undergraduate students while each memorized and recalled lists of both scientific and common mathematics words. A paired samples t-test showed that there was no significant difference in average cortical activity between exposure to scientific math words and exposure to common math words. The t-test did show that students who had high cortical activity when exposed to scientific
terms also had high cortical activity when exposed to common terms. Further research is needed to clarify factors related to math anxiety
Effects of modality: examining the influence of auditory and visual formats on false recognition
No full textThe present study investigated the effects of modality (method of presentation) on false memory. It was hypothesized that an auditory format (audio tape) would produce a significantly greater incidence of false
memory than a visual format (PowerPoint). A convenience sample of 33 undergraduate students participated in this experiment. The participants either viewed a set of word lists on a PowerPoint presentation or listened to the same word lists on audio tape. Each list was followed by a 2-minute recognition task. An independent samples t-test revealed no significant differences in recognition between the two modalities
