REVELATIONS: A QUALITATIVE INQUIRY ON VISUAL ARTISTIC EMERGENCE COMMON TRIGGERS, SHARED PERCEPTIONS AND STRATEGIES FOR PERPETUATION
No full textThis research proposal identifies those experiences that lead to the pursuit of visual art as sustained passion in life. In seeking the potential factors that contribute to an individual’s continued interest in visual art at key points in their physical maturity and educational lives, strategies for success could be developed for the benefit of those so disposed. This inquiry utilizes a qualitative methodology involving up to three consenting Advanced Placement high school seniors. Both male and female students over 18 years of age have the cognizance to think and guide creative action appropriately and recall past experience. Three carefully selected undergraduate and Master of Fine Arts (MFA) students of both genders have offered their perspectives and responses at an adult level. These students contributed information about visual artist emergence. In addition, perspectives relating to the perpetuation of on-going involvement within the field of visual art have been explored. Observations of the students within their creative environments and semi-structured interviews have drawn out reflections and life experiences that enabled proficiency within the wide variety of visual media at their disposal. The interviews have, in part, focused on selected pieces of artwork that hold personal meaning to each individual. Information accumulated from descriptive, structure, and contrast questions, has developed thick description, which has been coded and analyzed for commonly shared, as well as unique themes and experiences.Doctor of Education (EdD)Education & Educational Psycholog
"Going Up?"
No full textShort one-act play, followed by a lesson unit for high school students.This project has two parts. The first part is a short, one-act play satirizing ambition in an inner city office environment. The play centers on the competition between two office workers, Steven and Jane, and "Flunkie" Frankie. The three are called to the 16th floor by their boss, Mr. Finch. On their journey they experience a series of mishaps that reveal their characters. Part two applies an understanding of the writing process to teaching high school students about writing plays. The lesson unit engages students in groups to write one-act plays. The students will experience their own creative process, as well as the editing process, as their own work goes through a series of "cold readings.
Monograph of Castelnavia (Podostemaceae)
No full textA monograph of Castelnavia is presented. Phylogenetic analyses of morphological characters reveal eight nonhomoplasious synapomorphies supporting the monophyly of the genus: 1) absence of roots, a 2) unilocular mature, 3) anisolobous ovary that is 4) surrounded by stem tissue during and after anthesis, 5) horizontal at anthesis, with an 6) asymmetrically inflated pedicel apex and 7) longitudinal axis at 45–90° angle relative to pedicel axis, and 8) one deciduous capsule valve. Five species and two forms are recognized: Castelnavia fluitans , C. monandra , C. multipartita ( C. m. forma multipartita , C. m. forma pendulosa C. T. Philbrick & C. P. Bove), C. noveloi , and C. princeps . Four species accepted by earlier authors are placed in synonymy. The morphology and ecology of the genus is discussed, and species descriptions, illustrations, a distribution map, lists of specimens examined, and a key to species are presented. Castelnavia occurs primarily in Brazil with one species in Bolivia. The greatest species diversity is in the Brazilian states of Mato Grosso, Pará, and Tocantins
