Gendered Expectations; Moderate Deviance in Georgian London
Prospectus PieceThe Duchess of Devonshire was a passionate participant in the Westminster Election of 1784. Her experience is an illustrious example of a woman in history who faced ridicule due to failure to comply to her gender and social roles. The rich primary sources that document the event, including satire, memoirs and personal letters tell the story of a prestigious woman who battled against expectations for "proper" behavior of women in society. Her actions throughout the election were met with great discomfort thus; she was made a mockery. Reactions to the Duchess' political involvement was warped by the media making her out to be more deviant than she really was
The 20th Century of American Fashion: 1900 - 2000
This thesis project is a collection of articles that discuss American fashion
during the 20th century. The articles are grouped by decade, starting in the year
1900 and finishing in the year 2000; with a double-decade piece for the beginning
of the century. Fashion is an ever-changing, growing entity that connects with
every person in the United States; some embrace it while others ignore it, yet
fashion has a place in the American society that is constant. Through world wars
and depressions, fashion takes on revolutionary hardships and transforms itself
accordingly, becoming selections of style that fit every occasion, taste, and social
standard. What happens in society is demonstrated in fashion. Coco Chanel
quoted, "fashion is always of the time in which you live." These articles
correspond to and represent that
When The Balloon Goes Up
This is part of a screenplayNicky Red was always an uptight right wing conservative Republican. His "be prepared for anything" attitude is what enabled his family to survive the apocalypse. Now that they are running low on food and moral will they stay in the same place they have been cooped up in since Armageddon, or will they look to rebuild society.
Nicky's older son Richie is a left wing Democrat, causing them too often but heads. Can they put their difference in beliefs behind them for the sake of their family's survival? Nicky's younger son, Robert, and his promiscuous girlfriend, Giselle, have also survived and are residing in the compound Nicky has constructed out of there old house. With tons of adventure and a good amount of laughs When the Balloon Goes Up is not only a social commentary on contemporary politics, it is also a great action-adventure film
The Effect of Question Wording on the Resolution of Visual Ambiguity
Ambiguity is valuable because it can lead to new insights which arise from a shift in perspective. In order to evaluate how visual ambiguity is resolved, college students were shown an ambiguous picture and asked to respond to one of three questions. These three questions varied in sentence structure, and they assessed the students' ability to identify whether the ambiguous picture had one of two components, two of two components, or two independent components which form one cohesive unit. Contrary to the researchers' hypothesis, the way in which the questions were worded did not influence how quickly ambiguity was resolved

Has the Portrayal of Women in the Media Changed Enough Since the 1950's?
My project emphasizes the comparison of women's portrayal in the media from 1950's to present and showing that women are still oppressed through body image, sexism and gender bias. The three different sections, highlights the media's continuing patriarchy. After the feminist movement, society was convinced that women achieved social equality, but the noticeable underlying theme of oppression still lingers. Barbie, the popularity of breast enlargement, eating disorders, Hilary Clinton bashing, Disney's The Little Mermaid, and pornography provide evidence that sexism and gender bias are still alive and well in U.S. culture
Suspension in Suspense: Expressions of English Medieval Morality Plays in
English medieval morality plays such as Everyman and Mankind have found a voice in G. K. Chesterton's and Arthur Conan Doyle's crime literature. The moral vision that Chesterton and Doyle offer is based on medieval morality, but made accessible to popular culture through the literary devices of the detective genre. Both genres communicate essential metaphysical realities and moral principles to the reader. To truly engage in the mystery fiction, the reader must subconsciously but temporarily retire personal notions about morality and accept the traditional morality reflected in the crime story. This suspension of individual ethics and the borrowing of ancient ones allows the reader living in a subjective world to find reassurance in a sovereign standard, thus participating existentially in greater metaphysical realities of the narrative, thereby fulfilling the ultimate objective of literature: the enrichment of the reader's understanding of human nature.Master of Arts (MA)Englis
