    Personal Visits and Observations: Charles Nordhoff’s Remarkable Tour of American Communal Societies

    In 1873 and 1874 Charles Nordhoff, the former managing editor of the New York Evening Post, then working as a freelance descriptive writer, made a personal survey of the major communal societies in the United States. In a period of political and economic turmoil, Nordhoff wanted to observe how ordinary Americans, many of them European immigrants, formed cooperative communities to meet their spiritual, religious and physical needs. The result of his investigation was a book with the ponderous title, The Communistic Societies of the United States from Personal Visit and Observation. One hundred and forty years after its initial publication, Communistic Societies is one of the most frequently studied and cited of all sources on the movements that it documents

    Deterministic Quantum Emitter Formation in Hexagonal Boron Nitride via Controlled Edge Creation

    Quantum emitters (QEs) in 2D hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) are extremely bright and are stable at high temperature and under harsh chemical conditions. Because they reside within an atomically thin 2D material, these QEs have a unique potential to couple strongly to hybrid optoelectromechanical and quantum devices. However, this potential for coupling has been underexplored because of challenges in nanofabrication and patterning of hBN QEs. Motivated by recent studies showing that QEs in hBN tend to form at edges, we use a focused ion beam (FIB) to mill an array of patterned holes into hBN. Using optical confocal microscopy, we find arrays of bright, localized photoluminescence that match the geometry of the patterned holes. Furthermore, second-order photon correlation measurements on these bright spots reveal that they contain single and multiple QEs. By optimizing the FIB parameters, we create patterned single QEs with a yield of 31%, a value close to Poissonian limit. Using atomic force microscopy to study the morphology near emission sites, we find that single QE yield is highest with smoothly milled holes on unwrinkled hBN. This technique dramatically broadens the utility and convenience of hBN QEs and achieves a vital step toward the facile integration of the QEs into large-scale photonic, plasmonic, nanomechanical, or optoelectronic devices

    Kayley Boddy \u2722 is a first generation QuestBridge student from Knoxville, Tennessee. Though she intents to major in Classics and Archaeology, she is involved heavily in creative writing and performance on campus. She is the president of Poetry Slam Club and a member of several other clubs and publications, including Red Weather, Vibes, Hogwarts at Hamilton, and Untitled @ Large, and has performed at a variety of campus coffeehouses, open mic nights, last year\u27s Funktion, and the 2019 College Unions Poetry Slam Invitational. Ruth Coolidge \u2721 hails from St. Louis, Missouri and is majoring in Creative Writing and Cinema Studies. Her biggest on-campus passions are playing rugby, paddling with the marathon canoeing team, and leading for Adirondack Adventure. In addition to being an aspiring filmmaker and a total film geek, Ruth also loves her summer job as a camp counselor and wants to spend her life being outdoors. These two aspects of her life are the driving inspirational force behind her creative work

    Utopia, Ohio, 1844–1847: Seedbed for Three Experiments in Communal Living

    The nearly forgotten town of Utopia, Ohio—now a tiny community located on the banks of the Ohio River, approximately thirty miles southeast of Cincinnati—provided a testing ground for three distinctive communal experiments during the period from 1844 to 1858. Although today described as “a ghost town on U.S. Route 52—a dozen houses, barns, trailers and the Village Market,” this one geographic point witnessed the rise and fall of utopian dreams as well as great human tragedy. These dreams ranged from a socialist movement inspired by the teachings of Charles Fourier, to a spiritualistic/abolitionist undertaking led by John O. Wattles, and, finally, to a labor-capital approach by protoanarchist Josiah Warren. Utopia is unique in the United States for having experienced these three very different experiments. Although their ideologies were substantially different, they shared the hope of creating a utopia where the tensions of nineteenth-century life would be replaced by human harmony and cooperation
