Relationship between reading habits and vocabulary in pre-service English teachers

    No full text
The aim of this research is to examine the relationship between reading habits and the frequency of reading in English, as well as the receptive and productive vocabulary of a sample of 86 pre-service English teachers. The sample comprised students on the Intensive English Itinerary of the Primary Education Degree. They completed an ad hoc questionnaire designed to ascertain their reading habits, as well as the Vocabulary Level Test (Webb et al., 2017) and the Lex30 (Meara & Fitzpatrick, 2000) in order to determine the size of their receptive and productive vocabularies. The results indicate that the majority of the sample do not have an established foreign language reading habit. Furthermore, they are not regular readers, and their reading is determined by their level of proficiency in English. Additionally, there are differences in receptive and productive vocabulary according to the reading habits of the sample, and a significant relationship between vocabulary and reading frequency.

This is an Author’s Original Manuscript (AOM) version of the following article, accepted for publication in Environmental Education Research. Corbacho-Cuello, I., NúñezFlores, A., Hernández-Barco, M. A., & Muñoz-Losa, A. (2024). Bridging generations: how primary school students and primary school prospective teachers view animals. A cross-sectional survey of 100 primary school students and 102 primary school prospective teachers assessed animal behavior, animal attitudes, species conservation preferences, and general animal preferences. Data analysis revealed attitude similarities and differences. Primary school students often categorized animals as "good" or "bad", while prospective teachers displayed a more balanced understanding due to higher education. Both groups preferred killing non-appealing animals and showed a bias towards conservation of culturally positive animals. Regarding common fears, both groups showed similar inclinations, shaped by evolutionary and cultural factors. The results showed that, broadly, preferences and attitudes towards animals and animal conservation are already formed at the primary school stage, although some of these aspects seem to be modulated along students’ education process. Therefore, findings highlight the need for educational interventions promoting positive attitudes towards all animals, with balanced narratives and enhanced training for prospective teachers. This study contributes to the broader understanding of environmental and sustainability education by highlighting the importance of early and higher education in shaping animal conservation attitudes. This work was supported by the MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 under Grant PID2020-115214RB-I00; Junta de Extremadura and European Regional Development Fund “A way to make Europe” under Grant GR21047; and Universidad de Extremadura - Proyectos de Innovación Docente under Grant 2023/2024-LP3-nº59.notPeerReviewe

Age dynamics of the gender wage gap: An analysis with matched employer-employee microdata for Spain

The aim of this research is to provide new evidence on the evolution of the gender wage gap by age using matched employer-employee microdata for Spain, taking into account changes across generations with respect to the age dynamics of the pay gap. We propose a wage equation controlling for age effects and their differences by gender. We estimate this equation by year taking advantage of overlapping cross-sectional microdata. We then calculate the variation of the gender wage gap for individuals with the same age but belonging to different generations as each wave of our data encompasses common birth cohorts. Our results suggest that the gender wage gap in the case of Spain tends to decrease both over time and across generations. By contrast, it tends to widen as women get older, which is consistent with previous research for other countries. These trends are robust to changes in the wage equation specification and apply even for comparisons of very similar men and women working at very similar firms. In fact, segregation appears to play an important role in the evolution of the gender wage gap along the career.peerReviewe

Review of Industry 4.0 from the Perspective of Automation and Supervision Systems: Definitions, Architectures and Recent Trends

    No full text
Industry 4.0 is a new paradigm that is transforming the industrial scenario. It has generated a large amount of scientific studies, commercial equipment and, above all, high expectations. Nevertheless, there is no single definition or general agreement on its implications, specifically in the field of automation and supervision systems. In this paper, a review of the Industry 4.0 concept, with equivalent terms, enabling technologies and reference architectures for its implementation, is presented. It will be shown that this paradigm results from the confluence and integration of both existing and disruptive technologies. Furthermore, the most relevant trends in industrial automation and supervision systems are covered, highlighting the convergence of traditional equipment and those characterized by the Internet of Things (IoT). This paper is intended to serve as a reference document as well as a guide for the design and deployment of automation and supervision systems framed in Industry 4.0.peerReviewe

    No full text
Alongside the evolutionary phenomena that arose in the transition from Latin to Romance, there were educated reactions that rescued the original voices to accommodate them, with minor adjustments, to the systems of the Romance languages, at the same time as the patrimonial words, evolved from the same etymons, managed to stay in the spoken register and from there passed to the linguistic system. Such processes gave rise to the development of doublets in the language, pairs of duplicates that, from a common etymological base, gave different results, such as the one formed by the correcto/correcho pair, whose history and geographical distribution (with the exclusive presence of the patrimonial result correcho in the provinces of León and Asturias) itself illustrates phonological processes that, on occasion, go beyond the territorial boundaries established by historical grammars. The derivative adjective escorrecho is related to these words, which enjoyed remarkable vitality in the 13th century and began to decline later until it fell into oblivion, since the Dictionary of Authorities (1929) already defines it as an outdated term whose appearance in lexicographical works does not exceed the margins of the first half of the 19th century. The processes that led to these evolutions will be explained in the present study with the support of databases on Spanish and the main tools of our lexicographical tradition.peerReviewe
