Using technology to engage students in outdoor education: Does it inhibit or benefit the students’ experience?
Get PDFIn this paper, the benefits and drawbacks of incorporating technology into outdoor education are discussed. The data was collected during an inquiry based project for an educational technology course. This research is important because of the growing epidemic of children staying indoors with their technology rather than going and enjoying outside. There always seems to be a divide between outdoor education, or being outdoors in general, and modern technology. However, by using modern technology students may be engaged and drawn into outdoor education. Therefore, incorporating technology into outdoor education may be something to consider. This study analyzed the possible effects on students of incorporating technology into an experiential learning opportunity of being outdoors. The participants of this study were predominantly Education students at Mount Royal University, Education faculty members, as well as people from other occupational backgrounds who felt strongly about outdoor education

Get PDFThis article discusses the topic of digital citizenship and how it relates to current students, pre-service teachers, and teachers in the field. It asks the questions; what is digital citizenship? How important is it to teach in elementary? Junior high? High school? What kinds of resources should I, as a pre-service teacher be aware of in my journey to becoming an elementary teacher? I created surveys to address issues and answer some of these research questions. Not only did I send out surveys, I also conducted two interviews to ask extended questions that were raised as I gathered my research. Results showed that current students may or may not realize the importance of digital citizenship, but pre-service and elementary teachers believe it is crucial that this topic be covered in the classroom. This research project is profound for teachers that are developing a teaching philosophy
Computer-based math curriculum reform: Incorporating digital technology into teaching mathematics
Get PDFThe issue in today’s education is that teachers may be engaged in the role of teaching but not necessarily facilitating the learning process. This study was created to explore tools that will encourage and maximize student learning in mathematics. It highlights the advantages and possible disadvantages of incorporating digital technology into mathematics. Students tend to lose focus in the subject being taught due to a lack of interest. This is why curriculum reform is needed, in order to awaken and develop powers of creativity in teaching. I gathered an assortment of information through online surveys, interviews and field experience. My findings showed that positive math learning experiences were created through engaging students in math activities with the use of digital technology. The development of digital technology in curriculums such as math may just be the road to a successful curriculum reform. One that encourages and engages student curiosity, individuality and their creativity
The relationship between student engagement, teacher proficiency, and technology
Get PDFThe purpose of this research project was to see if there are any connections between student engagement and teacher proficiency when digital technology is being used in the elementary classroom. In order to determine if such a connection does exist, scholarly articles were reviewed and an online survey of students in the Bachelor of Education Program was conducted. Through scholarly review, it was determined that there is a direct connection between the proficiency of the teacher using the digital technology and the engagement of the students in the learning activity. If the teacher is highly proficient, then students are more likely to be engaged in the lesson. Through the online survey, teacher candidates answered questions about their own proficiency levels with specific digital technologies. From the findings of this project, it can be concluded that teacher proficiency is very important when it comes to engaging students through the use of digital technologies in the classroom. Professional development in this area would be useful for both teacher candidates and practicing teachers, as the use of digital technology in the elementary classroom is increasing
La ideología feminista en \u27Si me permiten hablar...\u27 Testimonio de Domitila, una mujer de las minas de Bolivia
No full textEl conocido testimonio de Domitila Barrios de Chúngara se analiza en este ensayo. A la luz de la teoría feminista y del análisis del contexto de la enunciación, se observa la posición de Chúngara como líder que apoya los derechos de la mujer y su simultánea representación como no feminista. Asimismo, se explora el papel de la autora y mediadora Moema Viezzer en relación al contenido feminista de la obra. La autora sugiere que, a pesar de la negación de Chúngara, su testimonio contiene ideas feministas. The well known “testimonio” of Domitila Barrios de Chúngara, by Moema Viezzer, is analized in this essay. In the light of feminist theories and the context of enunciation, the position of Chúngara as a leader who supports women rights is explored, as well as her representation as a non-feminist woman. Moema Viezzer’s role as author and mediator is also analized with regard to the feminist contents of the book. The author suggests that, in spite of Chúngara’s denial, her account includes feminist ideas.
Understanding Health and Medicine: A Critical Examination of Governance, Surveillance and Control within Contemporary Culture
Get PDFWithin contemporary western society, health and medicine understandings are often taken for granted, left unquestioned and undisturbed. However, the author of this paper looks to uproot and critically examine much of what medical professionals, scientists, and patients alike have come to understand as ‘normal’. Thus, an assessment of the ways in which the neo-liberal model, the creation of the abnormal/normal binary and social discourses combine in order to enact control, surveillance and governance, will be considered. Then, through the use of Foucauldian theory, a discussion of the implications of such ubiquitous and omnipresent social processes such as surveillance, control and governance will be considered. Furthermore, the neo-liberal model will be presented in greater detail to illustrate the ways in which privilege is cast unto those who embody that of the archetypal citizen. Additionally, social theorists Giddens and Beck will be considered as they offer critical key concepts – such as that of the risk society – which will help to better contextualize the larger theoretical frameworks that exist and pertain to health and medicine. In conclusion, Foucault’s concept of the panopticon will exemplify the ways in which surveillance, control and governance are irrevocably intertwined at a variety of levels to ultimately create citizens whom conform to government beliefs and ideals

It is traditional in its use of visual cues such as darkness, blood and abnormality as sources of fear. In this sense, it obeys the conventions of its genre and embraces its iconography. However, the initially normative and ultimately transformative examination of monstrosity solidifies its position as an atypical horror film. The protagonist’s normalized environment is revealed to be a sinister setting, to the extent that its monstrosity becomes contagious.
