Reginald Scot and King James I: The Influence of Skepticism
The witch trials were less robust in England than in contiental Europe and the efforts of England\u27s first skeptic, Reginal Scot, may have contributed to the outcome. Scot\u27s efforts to debunk witchraft in his book The Discoverie of Witchcraft (1584), were done so in a logical, methodical and theological manner. King James VI of Scotland felt the need call out the doubters of witchcraft, and named Scot specifially, in his own work Daemonologie (1597) and upon becoming King James I of England, he banned Scot\u27s book. It is apparent, however, through the King\u27s changing attitudes and eventual desire to reveal the hoaxes for what they were it becomes evident that the information Scot sought to reveal did in deed have an impact on the King
A Review of The Role of Mindfulness-based Interventions in the Treatment of Addiction
Mindfulness involves the nonjudgmental awareness and observation of one’s feelings, thoughts, and behaviours. Mindfulness-based interventions are becoming increasingly popular, as the growing body of research suggests promising implications regarding mindfulness as an approach to treat a wide variety of health problems. Specifically, mindfulness practices have been utilized in the treatment of addiction, and are shown to significantly reduce the relapse rate for individuals struggling with addiction. This paper reviews the research on mindfulness and addiction, describing the conceptualization and measurement of mindfulness, as well as various mindfulness-based interventions. An overview of addiction, including its determinants and treatments, is also provided. The relationship between mindfulness and addiction is examined and conclusions are drawn about the effectiveness of mindfulness interventions, how these interventions address the essential components of recovery, and the extent to which mindfulness may be utilized as a preventative measure
Music and Self-Awareness: A Relationship or Not?
In this paper I reviewed two main themes: (1) how music can be used as a tool to increase an individual’s self-awareness (SA) and (2) how music and SA relates to individual and social psychology. To investigate these themes, I searched academic databases for music and its effects on SA at the individual and group level. This paper is focused on music in the context of therapy, development, neurobiology, the relationship between bodily sensations and conscious awareness, and group or social implications. Overall, I found that there are potential future applications for music in the context of individual or group therapy. Furthermore, due to lack of specific research in this area, I explored limitations in the research and offer suggestions for future researchers trying to determine if music has an effect on individual SA
New Directions in the Controversial Study of Self-esteem: A Review with Suggestions for Future Research
The construct of self-esteem (SE) is controversial due to conceptual and methodological problems that have led to the near abandonment of its study. While little is known about the theoretical underpinnings of SE and its functions, clinicians, educators, organizational leaders, and policy-makers dangerously push for SE programs in hopes of boosting performance. Attempting to boost performance using unsubstantiated praise as a motivator may actually contribute to egotistical and narcissistic attitudes and related behaviours, yet good performances tend to raise self-ratings of SE.There are still good reasons to study SE because evidence supports positive relationships between SE and happiness, SE and well-being, as well as low SE and anxiety, rumination, depression, and poor self-regulation. Self-evaluation and self-regulation are strongly related to both SE and the cognitive phenomenon of inner speech (IS), and both SE and IS are strongly influenced by individual and contextual differences. Therefore, I use the present review to theorize about functions of SE within a self-system, place the study within current paradigms considering both psychological and social influences, and offer suggestions for future research in fundamental SE phenomenology using IS sampling
A Commentary on the Relationship between Self-efficacy, Problem-focused Coping and Performance
Self-efficacy influences self-regulatory cognition and behaviour, including the way we approach and cope with problems and how we perform tasks. In this paper I examined the construct of self-efficacy and the strongly related variables of coping and performance to better understand how self-efficacy works at a fundamental level. I briefly reviewed some key concepts, measures and methods used in the study of self-efficacy, commenting on potentially important and understudied differences in coping styles that may influence self-efficacy. Specifically, problem-focused coping was the main coping strategy in the literature that had a positive correlation with both self-efficacy and performance. Lastly, I present some ideas for future research toward more understanding of the development of self-efficacy and its contributing factors
Math learning disabilities and digital technology
This research study addressed the question that how could the educational technologies help students in learning mathematical concepts in elementary, and especially focused on students who have math learning disabilities. After gathering background information from several scholarly articles, I conducted an online survey and sent out to my education class as well as my friends. For further information, I interviewed my university math professor, and my current mentor teacher in person. There were a total of 15 participants attending my research projects which including 13 online survey participants, and two interviews. According to my investigation, the result showed that more than half of my survey participants never heard about math learning disabilities, and about half of them had used digital technologies in learning math concepts. This research project is important to my own learning as a teacher candidate because it reminded me the challenges of using digital technologies, and also provided me some strategies when teaching math with technologies in an elementary class
