Yet, integrating anti-doping education into university curricula remains largely underexplored, particularly among future physicians. The aim of this research was to evaluate the students’ understanding of anti-doping within the bachelor’s degree in medicine in Mexico. Methods: Five hundred and forty-nine bachelor students in medicine (151 males, 351 females, and 7 participants identifying as non-binary) from six universities in Mexico filled out a validated questionnaire regarding general anti-doping knowledge. This questionnaire was an adapted form of the World Anti-Doping Agency’s Play True Quiz and included 36 multiple-choice questions. The results were converted into a scale from 0 to 100 points to evaluate anti-doping knowledge. Results: Students scored 55.30 ± 9.08 points (range = 28–83 points). Fourteen questions indicated an error rate higher than 50% within the sample. The course had no impact on the scores achieved in the anti-doping knowledge questionnaire (p > 0.05). Students who engaged in sports demonstrated higher scores in anti-doping knowledge compared to those who did not participate in any type of exercise (56.10 ± 9.04 vs. 54.19 ± 9.10 points; p = 0.008). Conclusions: It was determined that the knowledge of essential anti-doping regulations and doping prevention strategies among bachelor’s degree medical students in Mexico was found to be suboptimal. Doping prevention should be included in the syllabus of the bachelor’s degree in medicine to help future doctors avoid professional errors, whether negligent or intentional.Peer reviewe

Publisher Copyright: © 2025 Universidad de Murcia. All rights reserved.Orienteering is a booming sport within the physical activities in the natural environment and is included in the curriculum of Physical Education (PE). It is an excellent activity from a didactic point of view because it does not need to be competitive, it is challenging, cooperative, inclusive, accessible, and there is a possibility of success for all participants. Although orienteering is the most taught content within these activities, teachers identify barriers that make it difficult to carry it out or improve its practice. This study analyzed the GPS Orienteering app, whose main feature is that there is no need to place physical flags or QR codes. A total of 85 students of the degree in Physical Activity and Sport Sciences, in the subject related to physical activities in the natural environment, experienced a learning progression of orienteering, including the use of this app, of which their perceptions and use were explored. In conclusion, the app is user-friendly and practical, efficiently organizing a race and generating valuable data without requiring flags or QR codes.Peer reviewe

Publisher Copyright: © 2025 The Author(s). Molecular Nutrition & Food Research published by Wiley-VCH GmbH.Non-heme iron, mainly from plant foods, is theoretically less bioavailable than heme iron from animal food, which might increase the risk of iron deficiency in vegans. This study aimed to evaluate acute changes in plasma iron levels following non-heme iron intake in vegans compared with omnivores and to explore the mechanisms regulating these changes. Twenty-seven participants (18–30 years old) were divided into vegans and omnivores. After baseline measurements (body composition, blood pressure, and blood biomarkers), the participants consumed 150 g of pistachios. Blood samples were taken at baseline, 120 and 150 min after consumption to measure serum iron. The main outcome was the area under the curve (AUC) of serum iron The AUC for serum iron was significantly higher in vegans (1002.8 ± 143.9 µmol/L/h) compared to omnivores (853 ± 268.2 µmol/L/h) (p = 0.04; ES: 0.68). Multivariate regression analysis identified significant associations with hepcidin levels (β = −0.5, p = 0.03) and basal iron levels in the vegan group. This study demonstrates higher non-heme iron absorption in vegans compared to omnivores, highlighting the physiological adaptations involved in iron metabolism in plant-based diets. Larger longitudinal studies are needed to confirm these findings and assess plant-based diets' long-term effects on iron metabolism.Peer reviewe

Anaesthesia published by John Wiley & Sons Ltd on behalf of Association of Anaesthetists.Introduction: Restoration of surgical capacity is essential to post-COVID-19 recovery. This study explored the use and safety of anaesthesia options for inguinal hernia surgery, a common tracer condition, to describe current global practice and highlight opportunities to build the capacity of health systems. Methods: This is a secondary analysis of an international prospective cohort study of consecutive patients who underwent elective inguinal hernia surgery. We used a consensus process to define generalisable outcomes to measure patient selection, utilisation of hospital capacity and peri-operative safety in patients who received locoregional, spinal or general anaesthesia for their surgery. Results: In total, 16,554 patients from 83 countries were included. Locoregional anaesthesia was performed in 1536 (9.2%) of patients, compared with 9165 (55.4%) who had general and 55,853 (35.4%) who had spinal anaesthesia. Patient selection outcomes were comparable across anaesthesia groups. As a measure of hospital capacity, adjusted day-case rates were higher for locoregional anaesthesia (OR 6.62, 95%CI 5.13–8.54, p < 0.001) but not for spinal anaesthesia (OR 0.97, 95%CI 0.84–1.12, p = 0.68) compared with general anaesthesia. Complications were lower in patients who underwent locoregional anaesthesia (OR = 0.67, 95%CI 0.52–0.87, p = 0.001) but not for spinal anaesthesia (OR = 0.90, 95%CI 0.77–1.05, p = 0.167) compared with general anaesthesia after risk adjustment. Discussion: This study has filled knowledge gaps of anaesthesia practice in common surgeries across the world. Locoregional and spinal anaesthesia could be adopted as safe options to increase surgical volume when there is limited access to general anaesthesia.Peer reviewe

Publisher Copyright: © 2025, Instituto de Estudios Auriseculares (IDEA). All rights reserved. It is known that Francis Bacon (1561-1626) read the work of José de Acosta (1540-1600) and benefited from the information contained therein. Beyond this fact, the objective of this article is to outline an approach to the thought of both authors, their objectives, their methodological proposals, and their religious perspectives. This approach allows us to conclude that we are faced with two practically antagonistic discourses and to propose—until now as a hypothesis— the possibility that an alternative model of modernity is manifested in Acosta.Peer reviewe

Publisher Copyright: © 2025 Instituto de Estudios Fiscales. All rights reserved.Energy-efficient housing rehabilitation is a private decision with social, economic, and environmental benefits, and it is on the national and community political agenda. The European Union encourages states to promote these decisions with tax measures, belie-ving that fiscal tools can play a significant role. This work analyzes, based on the availa-ble economic literature, the economic variables that influence a cost-benefit analysis of these investment decisions to understand how fiscal policy can better incentivize them. Finally, the effectiveness of current fiscal measures is evaluated, along with the poten-tial need to revise them.Peer reviewe

ContinuumAEP y la adquisición de competencias en Pediatría

Publisher Copyright: © 2025 Asociación Española de PediatríaIntroduction: According to the Global Pediatric Education Consortium (GPEC), paediatricians need to acquire and maintain a set of competencies in their daily practice. Continuum, the online training platform of the Spanish Association of Pediatrics, has developed training activities to explore and achieve these competencies. Methods: Cross-sectional study of the training activities delivered on Continuum over eleven years and the competencies assigned to each of them. The period 2013–2024 was analysed through a descriptive analysis of competency coverage. Results: A total of 12 048 GPEC competencies were assigned to 1118 training activities, with an average of 10.8 competencies per activity. Of the 8509 competencies available in the Continuum competency matrix, 5718 were addressed at least once. This amounts to 67.2% of the total (95% confidence interval [CI], 66.2%-68.2%). Each competency was assigned an average of 2.11 times (95% CI, 2.07-2.15). There was considerable heterogeneity in the coverage by area of competence. We ought to highlight the high coverage (> 90%) for the areas of “Professionalism”, “Patient Safety and Quality Improvement”, “Musculoskeletal Disorders”, “Allergy”, “Dermatology” and “Nutrition” and the low coverage (< 10%) for “Self-Leadership and Practice Management” and “Gynecology”. Conclusions: In the period under study, the Continuum platform enabled the attainment of more than two-thirds of the competencies required for pediatric practice as established by the GPEC. We identified asymmetries between knowledge areas. These should be considered to prioritize access to underrepresented competencies.Peer reviewe

Oncological, surgical, and cosmetic outcomes of endoscopic versus conventional nipple-sparing mastectomy : meta-analysis

Publisher Copyright: © The Author(s) 2025.Background: Endoscopic nipple-sparing mastectomy has been developed to improve the cosmetic outcomes of conventional nipple-sparing mastectomy. This meta-analysis compares surgical, quality of life and oncological outcomes of endoscopic nipple-sparing mastectomy versus conventional nipple-sparing mastectomy. Methods: PubMed and Embase were systematically reviewed to identify literature relevant to endoscopic nipple-sparing mastectomy and conventional nipple-sparing mastectomy literature published through to August 2023. The risk of bias was assessed using the Newcastle–Ottawa Scale, and proportional and pairwise random-effects meta-analysis was performed. Surgical (operative time, duration of hospital stay, blood loss, necrosis, overall complications), quality of life (cosmesis, pain, nipple-areolar complex sensitivity) and oncological outcomes (margin positivity, recurrence, metastasis and breast cancer-specific mortality rate) were evaluated. Results: Of 1286 articles retrieved, 51 endoscopic nipple-sparing mastectomy studies and 12 conventional nipple-sparing mastectomy reviews were analysed; 10 non-randomized comparative studies (656 patients) were included in the pairwise analysis and 36 studies (comparative and single-group cohort studies; 2612 patients) in the proportional meta-analysis. Results showed no differences in oncological outcomes (mean follow-up of up to 52 months), comparable overall (OR = 0.49; P = 0.100) and necrotic complications (OR = 0.45; P = 0.150), and improved cosmetic satisfaction (OR = 1.88; P = 0.020). Comparing only single-incision endoscopic nipple-sparing mastectomy to conventional nipple-sparing mastectomy significantly reduced postoperative necrosis (OR = 0.19; P = 0.008). The proportional meta-analysis produced oncological and surgical outcome rates comparable to or lower than conventional nipple-sparing mastectomy rates. However, longer operative time (weighted mean difference = 43.08 min; P < 0.00001) and duration of hospital stay (weighted mean difference = 0.72 days; P = 0.0007) were observed. Conclusion: Endoscopic nipple-sparing mastectomy does not affect oncological outcomes in up to 52 months mean follow-up when compared with conventional nipple-sparing mastectomy and provides better cosmetic satisfaction, with a reduced risk of necrosis after single-incision endoscopic nipple-sparing mastectomy. As such, endoscopic nipple-sparing mastectomy may become a viable breast surgery option.Peer reviewe

Forgiveness in Romantic Relationships : The Moderating Role of Differentiation of Self in the Relationship Between Offense Severity and Post-Offense Distress

    No full text
Publisher Copyright: © 2025 The Author(s). Family Process published by Wiley Periodicals LLC on behalf of Family Process Institute. This study examines the role of differentiation of self (DoS) in the forgiveness process within romantic relationships, focusing on its moderating function between perceived offense severity and post-offense distress. The sample included 591 Spanish participants aged between 18 and 86 years (M = 42.66, SD = 17.06), and data were collected using validated questionnaires. Findings showed that DoS significantly moderates the relationship between offense severity and negative affect, negative cognition, and avoidance/resentment, but not with the positive dimensions of forgiveness (positive affect, benevolence, or positive behavior). Individuals with low levels of DoS experienced higher emotional distress after an offense, whereas those with high levels showed greater emotional regulation and a more realistic perception of the severity of the situation. These results highlight the importance of DoS as a regulatory resource for managing negative emotional responses but not necessarily as a promoter of prosocial attitudes or reconciliation. Results suggest that strengthening DoS in couples may help reduce the emotional burden of interpersonal transgressions. Future research could contribute longitudinal designs and dyadic analyses to capture the dynamic nature of forgiveness in romantic relationships.Peer reviewe
