Adjuvant hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy in patients with colon cancer at high risk of peritoneal metastases : Individual patient data meta-analysis
Publisher Copyright: © 2025 The Author(s).Background: About a quarter of patients with locally advanced colon cancer (pT4) develop locoregional recurrence, including peritoneal metastases. The aim of this individual patient data meta-analysis (IPDMA) was to evaluate the efficacy of adjuvant hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) with regard to reducing the locoregional recurrence rate in the overall population and high-risk subgroups of patients with locally advanced colon cancer. Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted in July 2024 to identify RCTs on adjuvant HIPEC in addition to routine adjuvant systemic chemotherapy in locally advanced colon carcinoma. An IPDMA was performed, with the locoregional recurrence rate as the primary endpoint and disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) as secondary endpoints. Results: The search identified two trials (COLOPEC and HIPECT4). Individual patient data were pooled for 386 patients, of whom 189 patients received adjuvant HIPEC and 197 patients constituted the control group. The median follow-up was 36 (interquartile range 32-60) months. A modified intention-to-treat analysis showed a 36-month locoregional recurrence rate of 16.0% for HIPEC patients and 21.2% for control patients (P = 0.295). Predefined subgroup analyses revealed a significant reduction in locoregional recurrence after HIPEC in patients with right-sided tumours (HR 0.56 (95% c.i. 0.48 to 0.67)) (P < 0.001). No significant differences in survival were found for the overall study population; low event rates in subgroups did not allow for survival analyses. Conclusion: Adjuvant HIPEC significantly reduced the locoregional recurrence rate in right-sided locally advanced colon cancer, but not in the overall study population. Definitive conclusions on DFS and OS require longer follow-up.Peer reviewe
Natural colour in Mies van der Rohe's Barcelona Pavilion

All rights reserved.Introduction: The construction of the German Pavilion for the Universal Exhibition in Barcelona in 1929 is a manifesto to the honesty of stone materials linked to Nature. A pavilion whose exhibition object is matter in its primary state. The materials transformed by man are shown as mechanisms used to shape a space in which the traditional materials linked to nature are shown without distortion. Methodology: An empirical study of the different spaces qualified by light and colour is carried out and those that appear in the Pavilion are selected. Results: We can identify several devices that transform the colour of the light, causing the planes of natural material to appear isolated from their surroundings, floating without references. These spatial devices appear linked to the new materials, and specifically glass. Discussion and conclusions: In the interior space, Mediterranean light is controlled through the interrelation of different filtering and diffusion devices. In this way, the materials can offer their splendour under a diffuse and continuous light. The reflection devices inherent in the nature of the materials used make the space infinite, breaking the physical limits and confusing the interior and the exterior.Peer reviewe
Hypersensitivity in Gifted StudentsA Comparative Study in Primary Education

All rights reserved.Introduction: This study investigates the relationship between High Intellectual Abilities (HIA) and hypersensitivity in primary school children, as well as gender differences in hypersensitivity. Methodology: A non-experimental comparative design was employed. The sample included 62 primary school students from the Community of Madrid, of whom 48.4% were diagnosed with HIA. The HSPS and EPAS-A scales were used to measure hypersensitivity. Results: Students with HIA showed significantly higher levels of sensitivity compared to their peers without HIA. Differences were significant across all dimensions of the EPAS-A, with greater depth of processing, emotional reactivity, sensitivity to nuances and subtleties, and overstimulation in students with HIA. Additionally, girls showed higher levels of sensitivity than boys. Conclusions: It is crucial to recognize and address the specific needs of students with HIA and hypersensitivity to support their emotional and academic development. The gender differences in hypersensitivity suggest that differentiated approaches should be considered in educational interventions. Creating an appropriate educational and emotional environment can foster the integral development of these students.Peer reviewe
Enhancing Wind Power Forecasting in the Spanish Market Through Transformer Neural Networks and Temporal Optimization
Publisher Copyright: © 2025 by the authors.The increasing penetration of renewable energy, and wind power in particular, requires accurate short-term forecasting to ensure grid stability, reduce operational uncertainty, and facilitate large-scale integration of intermittent resources. This study evaluates Transformer-based architectures for wind power forecasting using hourly generation data from Spain (2020–2024). Time series were segmented into input windows of 12, 24, and 36 h, and multiple model configurations were systematically tested. For benchmarking, LSTM and GRU models were trained under identical protocols. The results show that the Transformer consistently outperformed recurrent baselines across all horizons. The best configuration, using a 36 h input sequence with moderate dimensionality and shallow depth, achieved an RMSE of 370.71 MW, MAE of 258.77 MW, and MAPE of 4.92%, reducing error by a significant margin compared to LSTM and GRU models, whose best performances reached RMSEs above 395 MW and MAPEs above 5.7%. Beyond predictive accuracy, attention maps revealed that the Transformer effectively captured short-term fluctuations while also attending to longer-range dependencies, offering a transparent mechanism for interpreting the contribution of historical information to forecasts. These findings demonstrate the superior performance of Transformer-based models in short-term wind power forecasting, underscoring their capacity to deliver more accurate and interpretable predictions that support the reliable integration of renewable energy into modern power systems.Peer reviewe
Towards safer colorectal surgery worldwide : Outcomes and benchmarks from the ESCP CORREA 2022 audit

The ESCP CORREA 2022 snapshot audit aimed to assess contemporary colorectal resection practices and short-term outcomes across European countries and beyond. Methods: An international prospective multicentre audit was conducted in which adults undergoing elective or emergency colorectal resection during a 6-week period (January–April 2022) at participating hospitals were included. Data on patient demographics, indications, surgical approach (open, laparoscopic or robotic) and 30-day postoperative outcomes (complications, reoperation and mortality) were collected for analysis. The outcomes were analysed and compared with those of previous audits to identify trends in colorectal surgery. Results: The study enrolled 3521 patients (56.8% men) from 216 hospitals across 53 countries. In 72.2% of the cases, the indication for resection was malignancy, followed by diverticular disease in 9.0%, Crohn's disease in 3.7% and ulcerative colitis in 2.3% of the cases. Of the surgeries, 74.4% were elective. Minimally invasive surgery was performed in 55.2% of the cases (48.7% laparoscopic and 6.5% robotic). Primary anastomosis was performed in 90.3% of the patients. The 30-day anastomotic leak rate was 7.96%; in malignant and benign diseases, the leak rates were 7.3% and 10.2%, respectively. The leak rates for right, left, anterior rectal resection, pouch and subtotal colectomy were 6.9%, 7.7%, 9.7%, 16.0% and 11.8%, respectively. In the multivariable analysis, the risk factors for leakage included male sex (9.3% vs. 6.3%, OR = 0.69, 95% CI 0.51–0.95, p = 0.023) and emergency surgery (11.4% vs. 7.1%, OR = 1.58, 95% CI 1.10–2.27, p = 0.013). Thirty-day mortality was 2.38%. Conclusions: This large international audit provides the status of the management of colorectal surgery. This shows that minimally invasive techniques are widely adopted, and 30-day mortality is low; however, anastomotic leak rates remain persistently high. These findings highlight the ongoing need for targeted research and quality-improvement initiatives to reduce anastomotic failure and improve outcomes of colorectal surgery.Peer reviewe
IRI Performance Models for Flexible, Semi-Rigid and Composite Pavements in Double-Carriageway Roads
Publisher Copyright: © 2025 by the authors.Pavement Management Systems (PMS) depend upon reliable pavement performance models. In this paper, our aim is to develop International Roughness Index (IRI) prediction models for the heavily trafficked (right-hand) lanes of motorways in the province of Gipuzkoa (Spain) in flexible, semi-rigid, and composite pavements. A deterministic approach was selected, based on the available information in the PMS employed in that province, covering complete pavement structures. Omitting pavement type, the model yielded a determination coefficient (R2) of 0.696 with only three variables: pavement age, cumulative volume of heavy vehicles travelling through the section, and total thickness of bituminous layers. Then, two superior models were generated with pavement type as a variable, yielding R2 values of 0.781 and 0.795, respectively. Unlike the opaque features of Machine Learning (ML), the deterministic models captured precise relationships between the variables to a high degree of accuracy. They can moreover be applied to all pavements with bituminous layers, unlike many other models that are only applicable to a single pavement type. Furthermore, the models are presented for freeways where traffic is randomly distributed between lanes; a less widely covered topic in the literature.Peer reviewe
Migrations in Spain : econometric models with demographic and economic variables (1950–2021)
Publisher Copyright: © The Author(s) 2025.This research addresses migrations with the analysis of the historical evolution of Spain in this subject, in the period 1950–2021, within the context of globalization and its determinants based on different theories. The main objective is to analyze the evolution of demographic dynamics and its relationship with economic indicators in Spain, having as a research question that there is a relationship between economic and demographic variables. Some of these variables are GDP per capita, unemployment rate, public health expenditure, aging index, dependency rate and foreigners. Particular emphasis has been placed on public health expenditure per capita and its spatial lag. The methodology was quantitative in nature. It was performed a multivariate analysis using econometric panel data models. With the latter, data broken down by Autonomous Communities or regions in Spain are used through panel data models that, by including more territorial data, make the results more robust and reliable. The results confirm the research questions made for the econometric models. For example, GDP per capita and public health expenditure have a direct and significant relationship with the number of foreign immigrants in Spain. However, aging index has an inverse relationship with foreigners, whereas no significant relationship has been found with unemployment rate.Peer reviewe
Can Clinical, Psychological, and Cognitive Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) Help to Discriminate Women with Fibromyalgia from Those with Other Localized/Regional Pain Conditions? A Diagnostic Accuracy Study
Publisher Copyright: © 2025 by the authors.Background and Objectives: The heterogeneous clinical manifestations of fibromyalgia syndrome have led to the revision of diagnostic criteria in the last decade. The aim of this study was to determine the capability of clinical, psychological, and cognitive patient-related outcome measures (PROMs) to differentiate women with fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) from women with localized or regional pain conditions. Materials and Methods: A diagnostic accuracy study was conducted. Clinical (pain intensity—NPRS; related disability—FIQ), psychological (anxiety/depressive levels—HADS-A/HADS-D), and cognitive (sleep quality—PSQI; pain hypervigilance—PVAQ-9) PROMs were collected in 129 women with FMS and 65 women with localized/regional chronic pain conditions. The area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, cut-off point, sensitivity/specificity values, and positive and negative likelihood (LR) ratios of each variable were calculated. Results: Women with FMS showed higher levels of pain, related disability, and anxiety/depressive levels, worse sleep quality, and higher levels of hypervigilance (all, p < 0.001) than women without FMS. All PROMs showed excellent discriminatory power and good sensitivity (pain intensity: ROC 0.987, sensitivity 91.5%; related disability: ROC 0.980, sensitivity 93.8%; HADS-A: ROC 0.901, sensitivity 81.4%; HADS-D: ROC 0.906, sensitivity 85.3%; PSQI: ROC 0.909, sensitivity 79.1%; PVAQ-9: ROC 0.798, sensitivity 80.6%). Specificity was extremely small for all variables (<18%) except for pain hypervigilance (specificity: 34%). Conclusions: Women with FMS exhibited worse clinical, psychological, and cognitive variables than women with localized/regional chronic pain. Although all PROMs had good discriminatory power, related disability and pain hypervigilance were those showing the best models. These PROMs could be combined with the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) diagnostic criteria to better discriminate between women with and without FMS. Studies investigating the relevance of combining these PROMs with the ACR diagnostic criteria in clinical settings are needed.Peer reviewe
