No full textThis image shows Deacon Chrisenberry Howell (1856-1938), who was born into slavery in Cherokee County, and was taken by “Doc” Kelly Bennett (1890-1974). In his lifetime, Howell owned four farms, was a janitor at the courthouse, kept up the Bryson City cemetery where he was a grave digger, was a self-taught veterinarian, and was a drover, delivering livestock along the Unicoi turnpike. Bennett was a prominent pharmacist in Swain County, NC. Owner of the Bryson City Drug Company, Bennett served as alderman and mayor of Bryson City, on the Swain County Board of Education, as well as several terms as NC State Senator and NC State Representative. He participated in numerous other initiatives and organizations.
