    Ageing, Gender Politics and Masculinities: Reflections on Collective Memory Work with Older Men

    Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to reflect on the process of participating in a long-term collective memory work group of older men, focusing on the making/unmaking of older men and masculinities, and the potential of memory work with older men. Design/methodology/approach: Participant review and reflection on collective memory work with a group of older men. Findings: Collective memory work provides a novel way to explore ageing, gendering, men, and masculinities. Its potential for working with older men is examined critically in relation to gender politics, power and (in)equalities, interconnections and contradictions of men’s ageing and gendering, the personal and the political, as well as working with older men more generally, including those in transition and crisis. Originality/value: There is little previous writing on this approach to ageing, men, and masculinities. The paper aims to stimulate wider applications of this approach

    Fault Diagnosis of Centrifugal Pumps based on the Intrinsic Time-scale Decomposition of Motor Current Signals

    Centrifugal pumps are widely used in various manufacturing processes, such as power plants, and chemistry. However, pump problems are responsible for large amount of the maintenance budget. An early detection of such problems would provide timely information to take appropriate preventive actions. This paper investigates the application of Machine Learning Techniques (MLT) in monitoring and diagnosing fault in centrifugal pump. In particular, the focus is on utilising motor current signals since they can be measured remotely for easy and low-cost deployment. Moreover, because the signals are usually produced by a nonlinear process and contaminated by various noises, it is difficult to obtain accurate diagnostic features with conventional signal processing methods such as Fourier spectrum and wavelet transforms as they rely heavily on standard basis functions and often capture limited nonlinear weak fault signatures. Therefore, a data-driven method: Intrinsic Time-scale Decomposition (ITD) is adopted in this study to process motor current signals from different pump fault cases. The results indicate that the proposed ITD technique is an effective method for extracting useful diagnostic information, leading to accurate diagnosis by combining the RMS values of the first Proper Rotation Component (PRC) with the raw signal RMS values

    From Conventional to IT Based Visual Management: A Conceptual Discussion for Lean Construction

    Lean construction and construction automation are two of the important efforts to improve the performance of the construction industry. However, apart from a small number of scholarly articles and implementation prototypes, the lean and digital construction movements seem to be largely running independent of each other. This paper aims at exploring those connections between Visual Management (VM), a fundamental information management strategy in lean construction, and emerging technologies, demonstrating the synergy between the two concepts over potential implementation scenarios and establishing their conceptual connections in construction. Consequently, the hypothesis of the paper is there is a significant synergy between emerging technologies (construction automation) and visual/sensory information management strategies (Visual Management) in lean construction. The hypothesis is explored by (i) discussing how emerging technologies can support conventional VM tools and techniques and (ii) presenting a conceptual architecture to integrate emerging technologies, such as the Internet of Things, Augmented Reality, context aware and mobile computing, the use of drones and quadcopters, auto identification (AutoID) systems and laser scanning, to support lean construction and VM on construction sites. Futuristic scenarios for the implementation of the context-aware VM in application areas such as production control, production levelling, quality control, project planning and control, plant maintenance and safety control are examined from a lean construction perspective, alongside the presentation of a higher-level implementation architecture to integrate various VM and emerging technology components to support the implementation in a holistic picture. The use of such scenario based approach was found useful in summarising the technology components, their interconnections and possible implementation areas in relation with VM. This paper demonstrates how the integration of conventional and IT based visual management approaches is within reach and holds the potential to enhance the construction and maintenance phase of complex, large-scale construction projects by reviewing the synergies between operational VM concepts and IT

    Effects of temperature on the ion-induced bending of germanium and silicon nanowires

    Nanowires can be manipulated using an ion beam via a phenomenon known as ion-induced bending (IIB). While the mechanisms behind IIB are still the subject of debate, accumulation of point defects or amorphisation are often cited as possible driving mechanisms. Previous results in the literature on IIB of Ge and Si nanowires have shown that after irradiation the aligned nanowires are fully amorphous. Experiments were recently reported in which crystalline seeds were preserved in otherwise-amorphous ion-beam-bent Si nanowires which then facilitated solid-phase epitaxial growth (SPEG) during subsequent annealing. However, the ion-induced alignment of the nanowires was lost during the SPEG. In this work, in situ ion irradiations in a transmission electron microscope at 400°C and 500°C were performed on Ge and Si nanowires, respectively, to supress amorphisation and the build-up of point defects. Both the Ge and Si nanowires were found to bend during irradiation thus drawing into question the role of mechanisms based on damage accumulation under such conditions. These experiments demonstrate for the first time a simple way of realigning single-crystal Ge and Si nanowires via IIB whilst preserving their crystal structure

    J.H. Whitley and the Royal Commission on Labour in India 1929–31

    J.H. Whitley, recently retired as Speaker of the House of Commons, was appointed to chair the Royal Commission on Labour in India in 1929. Whitley’s founding of the joint industrial councils was well known and he had some interest in imperial matters, as was unavoidable for British politicians in the early twentieth century. Whitley was a member of the Empire Parliamentary Association and as Speaker had welcomed parliamentarians from across the dominions and Empire to the Palace of Westminster. In this chapter, we explore Whitley’s relationship to India, and what the Royal Commission did in India including what its recommendations were. We argue that the Royal Commission was initiated in context of the rise of trade unionism, industrial unrest and especially the threat to Empire as Britain struggled to maintain its rule, while it also sought seriously to understand and improve conditions for the labouring poor in India. The research for this chapter and its accompanying exhibition at the Whitley conference in September 2016 has been an exercise in the co-production of historical research, in which we worked together as a group of university students and staff to undertake the primary and secondary research, with co-interpretation and co-writing drawing together from discussions in a series of workshops

    A novel mammalian glucokinase exhibiting exclusive inorganic polyphosphate dependence in the cell nucleus

    Background: Hexokinase and glucokinase enzymes are ubiquitously expressed and use ATP and ADP as substrates in mammalian systems and a variety of polyphosphate substrates and/or ATP in some eukaryotic and microbial systems. Polyphosphate synthesising or utilizing enzymes are widely expressed in microbial systems but have not been reported in mammalian systems, despite the presence of polyphosphate in mammalian cells. Only two micro-organisms have previously been shown to express an enzyme that uses polyphosphate exclusively. Methods: A variety of experimental approaches, including NMR and NAD-linked assay systems were used to conduct a biochemical investigation of polyphosphate dependent glucokinase activity in mammalian tissues. Results: A novel mammalian glucokinase, highly responsive to hexametaphosphate (HMP) but not ATP or ADP as a phosphoryl donor is present in the nuclei of mammalian hepatocytes. The liver enzyme exhibited sigmoidal kinetics with respect to glucose with a S0.5 of 12 mM, similar to the known kinetics of mammalian ATP-glucokinase. The Km for HMP (0.5 mM) was also similar to that of phosphoryl donors for mammalian ATP-glucokinases. The new enzyme was inhibited by several nucleotide phosphates. Conclusions: We report the discovery of a polyphosphate-dependent enzyme system in mammalian cells with kinetics similar to established ATP-dependent glucokinase, also known to have a nuclear location. The kinetics suggest possible regulatory or redox protective roles. General significance: The role of polyphosphate in mammalian systems has remained an enigma for decades, and the present report describes progress on the significance of this compound in intracellular metabolism in mammals

    The interplay between social capital and international opportunities: a processual study of international ‘take-off’ episodes in Chinese SMEs

    The paper presents a processual analysis of international take-off episodes in Chinese SMEs. In considering the dynamics of pre-internationalization, the paper posits four temporally finer-grained, phases based on an actor’s orientation towards international opportunities. Based on a sample of twenty Chinese SMEs, the paper theorizes 12 temporally fine-grained take-off episodes, or which appear in practice as a series of tactical moves through which Chinese SMEs advance through the four phases in the longer pre-internationalisation of the process. By considering the multi-dimensional nature of social capital in international take-off, the findings contribute to a greater understanding of how forming international relationships work in the context of pre-internationalization in SMEs, also adding insights into the dynamics of internationalisation as an entrepreneurial and networked endeavour

    Dealing with challenges to methodological pluralism: the paradigm problem, psychological resistance and cultural barriers

    This paper calls for methodological pluralism in industrial marketing research. We discuss three challenges that proponents of methodological pluralism have to address if their practice is to be seen as credible: the paradigm problem; psychological resistance; and lack of cultural readiness to accept pluralism. We review the works of a variety of authors from other disciplines who have tackled these problems, and identify useful ideas to take forward into a model of learning. This addresses the paradigm problem by making it clear that no pluralist methodology can exist without making its own paradigmatic assumptions. It deals with psychological resistance by talking in terms of learning, starting from wherever the researcher is currently situated (a large knowledge base is not needed to begin practicing methodological pluralism). However, this model does not deal with the question of whether the time is right, culturally, for methodological pluralism. We argue that the time will be right when it is widely appreciated that methodological pluralism adds value to industrial marketing research practice. The next step for our research community must be the accumulation of a body of empirical evidence to demonstrate that this added value does or does not exist

    The Beefeaters at the Tower of London, 1826-1914: Icons of Englishness or Britishness?

    In the nineteenth century, a new icon was added to the British national gallery. The distinctive costume of the Yeomen Warders, known as Beefeaters, and their highly visible role at the Tower of London made them colourful symbols of the nation. This chapter examines nineteenth century as an epoch of crisis to which the monarchy responded by creating a narrative of historical continuity based on loyalty to the Crown and constitution. The Beefeaters at the Tower played an important part in this response. In the United Kingdom, made up of at least four nations, the Beefeaters needed to prove themselves to be national symbols able to cope with the complexities of being British
