Psychosocial correlates of attitudes towards male sexual violence in a sample of financial crime, property crime, general violent, and homicide offenders
Whilst those currently serving prison sentences for sexual violence can be identified and receive treatment, the number of prisoners with a history of sexual violence against female partners is unknown. Methods to identify prisoners with a proclivity for such violence and accurately assess the risk they pose before and after incarceration are therefore required. Here, we aimed to assess the level of sexually violent attitudes within dating relationships and to examine their associations with experiences of child abuse and neglect (CAN), psychopathic personality traits, prisonization, number of incarcerations, age, years of schooling, relationship status, and parenting among different types of offenders (financial crime, property crime, general violent, and homicide offenders). Data were collected among a large systematically selected sample of adult male inmates (N = 1,123). We demonstrated that sexual violence-supportive attitudes appear to be a function of child sexual abuse, psychopathic personality traits, and may be developed through early socialisation experiences as well as incarceration. Practical implications of current findings are discussed
Using ethnographic research techniques to find out the story behind international student library usage in the Library Impact Data Project
Purpose – Phase two of the JISC funded Library Impact Data Project (LIDP) identified low library usage amongst Chinese students in comparison to their UK peers. Further research was needed to help the authors delve deeper and find out the story behind the data. The paper aims to discuss these issues.
Design/methodology/approach – A questionnaire was distributed to all international students in the
Business School to learn about their information retrieval behaviours. The response was high but the survey was deliberately designed to only produce quantitative data, and the paper highlights the limitations of this data. More research using qualitative ethnography research techniques was needed to gather qualitative data
to create a broader picture of student practice. Methods utilised included the retrospective process interview and cognitive mapping (both used by Andrew Asher in the ERIAL project). Questions from the survey were sometimes used as prompts in the qualitative process.
Findings – The data are still to be coded and analysed but one of the main findings is that students are unaware of the research help that they can get from their academic library. Ethnographic research methods gave more inroads into finding the story behind the LIDP than quantitative research methods.
Originality/value – Ethnographic research in libraries is still in its early days in the UK. It could help those library professionals who are hoping to practice similar research methods
Benefits of visual management in construction: cases from the transportation sector in England
Purpose:
The purpose of this paper is to explore the benefits of Visual Management (VM) systems in transportation construction projects in England.
Design/methodology/approach:
Following a comprehensive literature review, the benefits of VM were investigated through action and case study research executed within two construction projects in England.
Findings:
The main findings are; VM can contribute to (i) increased self-management, (ii) better team coordination, (iii) better promises or an increasing Plan Percent Complete (PPC), (iv) easier control for the management, and (v) improved workplace conditions in the transportation sector. It is important for the management to obtain the engagement of their workforce for VM through increased participation and demonstrating the actual benefits. However, managerial monitoring and control on the systems should not be underestimated.
Originality/value:
The transportation sector in England has been systematically deploying lean construction techniques in its operations for a while. One of those lean techniques is a close-range visual communication strategy called Visual Management (VM). The literature on the VM implementation in construction is scarce and generally limited to the building construction context. This paper documents the benefits of VM systems for the transportation sector by using data captured through both qualitative and quantitative data collection methods. The paper also identifies a set of recommendations for similar research efforts in the transportation context in the future
Music, text and structure in fourteenth-century English polyphony: the case of Ave miles celestis curie
The present article demonstrates the complexity of musico-textual relationships in Ave miles celestis curie, a fourteenth-century polyphonic song whose generic markers relate it to both English troped chant settings and to the motet. Ave miles celestis curie was written in honour of the St Edmund, King and Martyr, whose cult flourished in England, particularly in East Anglia. Through a fresh analysis of the tenor parts, lyrics, and structural elements, I argue that previous discussions of Ave miles celestis curie have overlooked some of the musical and textual troping on which it is based. Furthermore, Ave miles celestis curie is used to interrogate assumptions about the limitations of analysing English music in comparison with contemporary French motets; rather than being only generic in sentiment, I argue for fresh investigation into individual pieces to reconsider the presence subtle relationships between music and text

This chapter will explore a response to traumatic victimisation which has divided the opinions of psychologists at an exponential rate. We will be examining amnesia for memories of childhood sexual abuse and the potential to recover these memories in adulthood. Whilst this phenomenon is generally accepted in clinical circles, it is seen as highly contentious amongst research psychologists, particularly experimental cognitive psychologists. The chapter will begin with a real case study of a woman who claims to have corroborated recovered memories of child sexual abuse and her experience will be further explored in the sections that follow. The remainder of the chapter will include discussion of the assumptions and counter arguments inherent in the debate and the different research methods used by the two opposing sides, consideration of the nature of recovered memories and evaluation of two different methods that have been explored as having potential for distinguishing between authentic recovered and false memories of abuse
Analysis of design and performance of tram-train profiles for dual-operation running
This article explores the design of a new wheel profile which can be used in a tram-train vehicle. A tram-train is a dual-mode vehicle that operates on two very different railway infrastructures: as a tram on light rail infrastructure and as a conventional train on heavy rail infrastructure. The challenges of wheel–rail interface have been highlighted and discussed, and the analysis and design process required to develop an optimised wheel profile for dual-operation running have been presented. One of the key issues in developing a dual-operation wheel profile was managing the contact conditions within the wheel–rail interface. The interface is critical not only to the safe running of the vehicle but also to maximise asset life and to minimise wheel–rail damage. A combination of vehicle dynamic simulations and bespoke software was used to allow the development of a new wheel profile for tram-train operations
Exploring Key Factors Required for Hybrid Systems: Analysis of a Focus Group
Background: There is a continued focus in healthcare that NHS Trusts must make cost savings while
ensuring quality and productivity is not adversely affected. It is essential that health care
professionals have access to pressure reduction/redistributing equipment that is evidence based and
can promote skin integrity via adequate reduction of excessive pressures and/or shearing forces.
This paper presents the results of a focus group exploring perceptions of a new hybrid mattress and
its application to clinical practice. Hybrid systems are increasingly being used in clinical practice to
assist in the prevention and management of pressure ulcers (PUs). Innova Care Concepts have
launched a new hybrid system, The Solment Serene.
Methods: A focus group design was used involving 5 Tissue Viability Key Opinion Leaders including
an academic, infection control and tissue viability specialists. All data was recorded and transcribed
verbatim, data generated was analyzed thematically. Confidentiality and anonymity was assured.
Results: Four key themes were identified; (1) patient suitability, (2) Ease of Use and Effectiveness,
(3) the importance of inter-professional working and (4) Loss of Equipment - Promotion of cost
effectiveness
Conclusions: The consensus was that there is a growing place for hybrid systems in preventing and
managing pressure damage effectively. Health and social care should work inter-professionally to
improve patient outcomes. The development of a flowchart based on scientific evidence was
recommended to assist in the decision making of appropriate equipment

Grid workflow validation using ontology-based tacit knowledge: A case study for quantitative remote sensing applications
Workflow for remote sensing quantitative retrieval is the “bridge” between Grid services and Grid-enabled application of remote sensing quantitative retrieval. Workflow averts low-level implementation details of the Grid and hence enables users to focus on higher levels of application. The workflow for remote sensing quantitative retrieval plays an important role in remote sensing Grid and Cloud computing services, which can support the modelling, construction and implementation of large-scale complicated applications of remote sensing science. The validation of workflow is important in order to support the large-scale sophisticated scientific computation processes with enhanced performance and to minimize potential waste of time and resources. To research the semantic correctness of user-defined workflows, in this paper, we propose a workflow validation method based on tacit knowledge research in the remote sensing domain. We first discuss the remote sensing model and metadata. Through detailed analysis, we then discuss the method of extracting the domain tacit knowledge and expressing the knowledge with ontology. Additionally, we construct the domain ontology with Protégé. Through our experimental study, we verify the validity of this method in two ways, namely data source consistency error validation and parameters matching error validatio
