    None in Three: The Design and Development of a Low-cost Violence Prevention Game for the Caribbean Region

    Domestic violence is a persistent and universal problem occurring in every culture and social group, with lack of empathy identified as a contributing factor. On average, one in three women and girls in the Caribbean experience domestic violence in their lifetime. In this paper we demonstrate the techniques used during the creation of a low-cost, violence prevention game titled None in Three, targeted at enhancing empathy and awareness among young people in Barbados and Grenada. A research trip was undertaken to gather photographic reference and to meet with young people. Methods to measure the emotional state of players and awareness of characters in-game were explored. Cost-saving measures such as asset store purchases were evaluated. Custom tools were created in order to speed up production, including a bespoke event editor for multiple-choice dialogue sequences, and the use of motion capture libraries and auto-rigging tools to speed up character animation workflows

    This is the story of a new venture in coffee roasting (Rounton Coffee) and a diversification strategy in the form of a coffee shop (Bedford Street Coffee). The development of these businesses is explained through the experiences of the founder, Dave Beattie. It tells of how he first encountered speciality coffee and then turned his interest into business ventures. Attention is given to the context of speciality coffee and its impact on: product and service differentiation, business models, potential for crowdfunding, motivation for entrepreneurship and the associated learning agenda. The teaching note informs both new venture creation and the entrepreneurial experience and is suited to final year undergraduate and masters’ level courses exploring entrepreneurial learning, opportunity spotting and business model development. In addition, the context of speciality coffee gives insight into how supportive inter-organizational and customer relationships can resource new venture creation, despite challenges in establishing initial links

    Empowering students by enhancing their employability skills

    Recognising the importance of graduates being equipped with appropriate employability skills alongside their subject-specific skills, we have had transferable skills training embedded throughout our degree programmes for 30 years. More recently, a specific employability skills module for final-year honours students has been created. This module consists of a programme of activities supporting employability skills, which was delivered to final-year undergraduate students from 2012 to 2015. A key feature in the development and delivery of these activities was the involvement of external experts. Detailed questionnaires have captured student perceptions and thematic analysis has revealed key themes. The module has been perceived to be highly useful, resulting in significant increases in students’ confidence across key areas of employability skills. Furthermore, students may hold skewed perceptions of the relevance of generic employability skills to their chosen career path. This fact should be considered when delivering employability skills programmes

    New regulations regarding elemental impurities in pharmaceuticals will be implemented in January 2018 and the guidelines include the use of inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). In this work, a method using each instrument was developed for the analysis of arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni) and vanadium (V) and validated to meet the international conference of harmonisation (ICH Q3D) guidelines. Liquid and solid samples were prepared using microwave assisted acid digestion method that was developed using reverse aqua regia. The results obtained from the validation showed good linearity (R2>0.995) with low limits of detections (LODs) and limits of quantifications (LOQs). The percentage recoveries for both the standard reference material (SRM) and the spiked samples were between 95-105% with relative standard deviation (RSD) of less than 5. Cold symptoms relief products were purchased and analysed. Levels of Pb and Cd in certain products were found to exceed the permitted daily exposure limit (PDE) when the maximum dose was taken

    Development of a spatially dispersed short-coherence interferometry sensor using diffraction grating orders

    Modern manufacturing processes can achieve good throughput by requiring that manufactured products be screened by better quality control exercised at a quicker rate. This trend in the quality control of manufactured products increases the need for process-oriented precision metrology capable of performing faster inspections and yielding valuable feedback to the manufacturing system. This paper presents a spatially dispersed short-coherence interferometry sensor using diffraction orders of the zeroth and first order for a diffraction grating introduced as a new compact system configuration for surface profile measurement. In this modified design, the diffraction grating acts as the beam splitter/combiner. Diffractions for the zeroth and first orders are represented by the reference and measurement arms, respectively, of a Michelson interferometer, which reduces the optical path length. This innovative design has been proven effective for determining the step-height repeatability in the sensor range from 27 nm to 22 nm for profiles spanning the step heights of the tested specimens

    Slow and fast diffusion in a lead sulphate gravity separation process

    A model for the growth of lead sulphate particles in a gravity separation system from the crystal glassware industry is presented. The lead sulphate particles are an undesirable byproduct, and thus the model is used to ascertain the optimal system temperature configuration such that particle extraction is maximised. The model describes the evolution of a single, spherical particle due to the mass flux of lead particles from a surrounding acid solution. We divide the concentration field into two separate regions. Specifically, a relatively small boundary layer region around the particle is characterised by fast diffusion, and is thus considered quasistatic. In contrast, diffusion in the far-field is slower, and hence assumed to be time-dependent. The final system consisting of two nonlinear, coupled ordinary differential equations for the particle radius and lead concentration, is integrated numerically
