White Nose Syndrome
White-nose syndrome is a fungal illness that has caused a major decline in the bat population in the United States and Canada, reportedly killing millions of bats as of 2018. A characteristic fungal growth around the muzzles and on the wings of hibernating bats gave the disorder its name. (Class Project
Managing The Edge Of Chaos
The purpose of this research sought to investigate the relationship between project management competencies and project complexity upon project success. A literature review indicates that project complexity is a primary source of project failure. A gap exists concerning how project management competencies and project complexity predict project success. The first research question was, “To what extent do project management competencies predict project success?” The second research question was, “To what extent does project complexity predict project success?” A quantitative method nonexperimental research design, using a correlational approach, was deployed. The theory of complexity explains that the relationship between project management competencies and project success is influenced by project complexity. The standard project management model and the expanded standard project management model were used to relate the three variables. The study population was project management professional certified project managers, who operated in the United States of America, and who completed a project within the last six months from the time of this research. Research results showed that project management competencies positively predict project success. Results were inconclusive concerning whether project complexity predicts project success. The predictive model involving project management competencies and project complexity upon project success is a good model. The predictive model offers insight into managing project complexity. Using project management competencies, project managers can establish an environment built on collaboration and knowledge-sharing. Using collaboration and knowledge-sharing, project managers can seize creativity and ingenuity, available in complex systems through interdependence, to influence project success
Stem Cell Therapy and Biomedical Applications
Stem cells have revolutionized research and applications for biomedical sciences. In combination with gene therapy as well as regenerative medicine, stem cells have led to several breakthrough technologies. Utilizing these advances, coupled with rDNA techniques, adult stem cells can be re-engineered to behave like embryonic stem cells. These induced Pluripotent Stem cells (iPSCs) can be introduced into the body in order to repair and rectify the underlying issues. (Class Project
Preference for Violence by Gender
In our survey we asked students of HU what their favorite video games were as well as their favorite genre and most played game. We then analyzed the data to see how gender affects preference for violent games. (Class Project
Using Mycelium to Bioremediate Environments Damaged by Acid Mine Drainage
Acid mine drainage (AMD) is a major source of environmental contamination around areas that were once utilized by the mining industry, and does not have many pragmatic remediation solutions. Pleurotus ostreatus mycelium has been previously tested and shown to be able to biosorb a variety of heavy metals into its mycelial tissue. This project utilized P. ostreatus mycelium as a novel and natural approach to bioremediate acid mine drainage. There were two experiments: one proof-of-concept experiment and one situational experiment that used stream mesocosms. (Project II
Traffic Crash Prediction Using Machine Learning Models
Traffic crashes account for most of casualties and injuries worldwide, and there has been growing concerns and studies regarding the contributing factors of traffic crashes. There are many factors causing or related to an occurrence of traffic crash, e.g., land use, traffic flow conditions, driver behavior and weather condition. This paper studied the spatial and temporal distribution of crashes on highway and developed real-time prediction models for crash occurrence. Traffic flow data, weather data, and crash data from multiple data sources were collected and processed to develop the model. Multiple machine learning models, such as SVM model and Decision Tree model, were used as the candidate models. It was found that weather, crash time, and traffic flow shortly prior to the crash occurrence are critical impacting factors for real-time crash prediction. The candidate models have low to moderate sensitivity to predict the crash occurrences due to limited sample size. To use the models in a traffic operations environment, a prediction tool with interactive map could be developed to proactively monitor crash hot spots and prepare staffing and resources for the potential crash occurrences

Preference of Inhalants over Pills/Injections among Pulmonary Tuberculosis patients in Western India: A Cross-sectional Study
Background:
Presently, pills and injections are the two modes of therapeutic treatment available for tuberculosis (TB) patients. Many researchers have hypothesized inhalation drug delivery for reducing treatment times and possibly limiting the insurgence of drug resistance. This study was aimed at identifying and assessing the preferences of inhalation therapy over injections/pills among pulmonary TB patients.
Method:
Cross-sectional study design was used and a sample of 477 participants were recruited at selected three Directly Observed Treatment Short-Course (DOTS) centers in Bhiwandi city. Data was collected through a self-reported questionnaire. Descriptive statistics were reported, and binomial regression models were applied for data analysis.
Results:
The preference of inhalants over pills/injections among pulmonary TB patients was significantly associated with clinical characteristics. The patients who underwent treatment for more than 1 year were 1.7 times more likely to prefer inhalants over pills/injections when compared with a treatment duration of less than 1 year. Similarly, patients taking five or more pills/day were 1.7 times more likely to prefer inhalants over pills/injections when compared with patients taking 1–4 pills per day.
Conclusion:
The study results signify that inhalants could be an acceptable method of drug delivery in this population of TB patients. Diverse drug delivery options for TB patients may greatly contribute towards TB treatment adherence
Harrisburg University’s Face Shield Response for Health Care Workers
This project was inducted into the Harrisburg University Digital Common\u27s with a submittal event. The recording for this event can be accessed here: Harrisburg University’s Face Shield Response for Health Care Workers Submittal Event Recording
The pandemic has most definitely been a significant factor in how people operate throughout the past few years. The pandemic was first introduced at the end of 2019 and is still a current issue at the end of 2021. Close to the beginning of the pandemic, health care workers had found themselves with a shortage of protective gear to fight against the virus while working on the front lines. The quick spread of the virus was the main cause of the supply drain. During the most heavily needed time for supplies, the Advanced Manufacturing program at Harrisburg University took the time to support their local health care workers in the form of manufacturing and distributing face shields. The process for how this was achieved began with understanding what is being printed, the printers used throughout the production stage and project phase, assembling the face shields, the distribution of face shields, and any issues that have occurred throughout the timeframe. These five points have the potential to show the steps that were taken to provide the necessary supplies to health care workers as well as to show the struggles that were dealt with in providing the greatly needed supplies
