Q. Is there a list of the Zionist press in Vllna, 
up to World War Two? 
The simple answer to this question, posed 
by a graduate student in Jewish Studies at 
Montreal's McGill University, is "No." To 
the best of my knowledge no such list has 
ever appeared, nor has there ever been an 
attempt even to compile a comprehensive 
list of all Jewish periodicals-regardless of 
political orientation and language-pub-
lished in Vilna before the Nazi Holocaust. 
This may surprise some readers, who 
might assume that such an important topic 
surely would not have been neglected by 
bibliographers. Ample material exists for at 
least a partial bibliography of the Jewish, 
including Zionist, press in Vilna, which 
before the Second World War was the 
second most important center of Jewish 
printing and publishing in Poland, after 
Warsaw. The parts still need to be pieced 
together, however. Warsaw has recently 
benefited from a monograph devoted to 
the history of its Jewish press. 1 It may be 
that Vilna's turn is next, and it is the 
purpose of this reply to suggest ways in 
which the purely bibliographical portion of-
the task might be accomplished. 
The first step to be taken in any in-depth 
bibliographical search of the Jewish press 
is to open the two volumes of Shlomo 
Shunami's Bibliography of Jewish Bibli-
ographies2, and turn to the heading "Lists 
of periodicals." This section is subdivided 
into the following categories: general, by 
language, and by country. 
A glance through Shunami yields at least 
three potentially -J)romising and quite 
specific citations, under the subheading 
for Poland. ~ne(item no. 655) is a list of 
over 50 periodicals, culled from an article 
on the Yiddish press in Vi Ina since the First 
World War, published in the 1922 Vilna 
Pinkes. 3 This turns out to be a descriptive 
article about Yiddish dailies, weeklies and 
other journals published in Vilna during 
and after World War One. This same article 
was subsequently revised, and printed in 
the 1935 collection Vilne (item no. 656 in 
Zachary M. Baker 
Jewish Public Library 
Montreal 
Shunami). Appended to the updated 
article is a list of thirteen Yiddish, eight . 
Polish, one Russian, four Lithuanian, and 
five Belorussian periodicals which were 
published in Vilna as of 1934, compiled by 
the indefatigable bibliographer Ephim H. 
Jeshurin.4 In addition, Shunami cites an 
article (item no. 4860) by Marian Fuks 
(whom he erroneously identifies as Lajb 
(Leo) Fuks, a noted Dutch Jewish 
bibliographer in his own right), on the 
Jewish press in interwar Poland, published 
in the Bulletin of the Jewish Historical 
Institute in Poland.5 The article by Fuks, 
which is in Polish, includes a list of Jewish 
serials published in Poland as of the end of 
1938. The list is arranged by city-not 
broken down by political orientation-and 
items no. 141-151 cover the Jewish press in 
Vilna. 
Numerous other leads might be pursued. 
Researchers ought not overlook the list of 
Hebrew periodicals that is printed in 
volume one (the index volume) of the 
Encyclopaedia Judaica.6 For our student's 
purposes, though, this alphabetically 
arranged list has serious drawbacks, 
among them the fact that it lacks a 
geographic index. Moreover, in the articles 
on "Press" and "Vilna," the encyclopedia 
gives only the names of the most 
prominent Jewish periodicals published in 
that city. 
A somewhat more approachable arrange-
ment is featured in the 1975 volume Di 
yidishe prese vos iz geven, 7 which is 
devoted primarily to the fate of periodicals 
published in the years leading up to the 
German occupation of World War Two. 
This book includes a chapter on the 
Yiddish and Hebrew press in Vilna, by 
Khaye Lazar (pp. 259-283). The author's 
approach is highly selective, but each title 
treated is given a thorough description. In 
addition, thirty-eight more references to 
Vilna are listed in the geographic index. 
Perhaps the best source for the Yiddish 
press in the Russian Empire (which 
included Vilna) before World War One is 
the bibliography Di yidishe prese in der 
• 110 Judaica Librarianship Vol. 1 No. 2 Spring 1984 
gevezener rusisher imperye, compiled by 
the Soviet Jewish bibliographer A. 
Kirzhnits, (which is listed in Shunami under 
the subheading for Russia (item no. 674).8 
About 130 Yiddish periodicals published in 
Vi Ina are included in the index to this rather 
rare item. 
As Chone Shmeruk has noted, the 
bibliography by Kirzhnits ''takes stock of 
the most difficult area-the [pre-World War 
One] Yiddish press. But for the relatively 
short period of 1918-39 it seems that, 
despite the apparent abundance of 
publications, there are as yet no funda-
mental works." 9 The various ancillary 
publications dealing with this period that 
are cited by Shmeruk include a checklist of 
incoming periodicals registered at the 
Vilna VIVO, two bibliographical annuals, 
and a list of Polish-language Jewish 
newspapers and serials.10 The most useful 
bibliographical sources for the interwar 
Polish-Jewish press, though, are two lists 
by the bibliographer Yisroel Shayn.11 
The first of Shayn's lists, on publications in 
Yiddish, Hebrew and Polish issued by 
various labor organizations in interwar 
Poland, was published in Warsaw, 1963. 
Though this list is quite impressive, 
including as it does twelve chapters on 
various Labor Zionist movements active in 
Poland during those years, its arrangement 
(by party) is not helped by the absence of 
an index. Title and geographical indexes 
ought to have been features of this 
bibliography. The task, then, of ferreting 
out Zionist titles published in Vilna is 
rendered all the more tedious. The second 
list by Shayn is a tentative bibliography of 
the "bourgeois" Yiddish press of Poland 
from 1918 to 1939. This list, which is 
included in the' 1974 VIVO collection 
Studies on Polish Jewry, is in one alpha-
betic sequence, and includes a geographic 
index wherein 135 items for Vilna-not all 
of them necessarily Zionist in orientation-
are mentioned. 
By now it should be apparent that our 
Montreal graduate student will have a 
complex task, should she ever undertake in 
earnest to compile a list of the Vi Ina Zionist 
press. Not all of the possible avenues of 
approach have been discussed here, and 
no doubt readers of this column will be 
able to bring omissions to my attention. 
This query serves to illustrate that 
sometimes the raw material for answering 
what might seem like a routine reference 
question is there, but the direct answer is 
not available in a single source.

SYNAGOGUE LIBRARIES 
Establishing a Policy on Gifts for the Synagogue Library 
Introduction 
A library's gift policy is usually based on its 
acquisition policy, which in turn reflects 
the basic philosophy of the institution. 
While it is preferable to have a formal 
acquisition policy, it is possible to establish 
a written gift policy even without such a 
document. 
These are some of the questions that arise 
concerning gifts to the synagogue library: 
- Who accepts or refuses book donations? 
- How does one decide whether to accept 
or reject a collection? 
- What is the library's policy on money or 
books donated with strings attached? 
- How does weeding affect donated 
books in the collection? 
The best way to deal with these issues is to 
establish a written gift policy, which will aid 
the librarian in resolving the various 
problems encountered in the handling of 
gifts from synagogue members. 
Some of my views on these questions 
follow. I encourage submission of 
alternative opinions and sample policy 
statements by readers of this column. 
Establishing the Policy 
A policy may be developed by the librarian 
in consultation with the library committee, 
if there is one, or with the Rabbi and/or 
administrator of the synagogue.· The 
minutes should be recorded and referred 
to when the need arises. 
Synagogue libraries are dependent for 
their support on Boards made up of 
congregants. In establishing policy, there-
fore, one must strike a balance between 
professional standards and public rela-
tions concerns. In dealing with members of 
the congregation regarding gifts, it is 
essential that the librarian avoid confronta-
tion. The librarian should cite the policy 
and speak in the third person, e.g., "The 
synagogue library's gift policy states ... " 
Accepting the Gift 
It is unlikely that a synagogue librarian

would seek to establish a policy which 
would allow for the refusal of all book 
_ donations sight unseen, as hope always 
exists that a hardcover edition of an out-of-
print favorite will be one of the titles in the 
donation box. A compromise policy 
might state that books g_ive□ to the library 
are accepted with the following provisos: 
the librarian will choose to keep the titles 
needed for the collection, and all books not 
accepted remain the property of the donor; 
and the library will not dispose of, or 
distribute the remaining books to other 
parties. Alternatively, if local conditions 
make it possible, the librarian may 
volunteer to distribute the remaining books. 
Handling the Offer 
of a Large Collection 
A gift policy should deal with the offer 
of a large number of books to the collection 
which may have Jewish content, be in very 
good condition, and even valuable-but 
which deal with a subject area of little 
interest or use to a particular congregation. 
The addition of such a collection could 
markedly change the focus of a library, 
especially a small synagogue library. As a 
consequence of accepting a large special 
collection, the librarian would be compel-
led to choose between building upon this 
foundation or treating the collection as a 
"museum piece." Offers of large collections 
should be handled differently from the 
usual small donation of books; if a decision 
is made not to keep the offered gift, it would 
be good public relations for the librarian to 
volunteer to find a more suitable home for 
the collection. 
Gifts with "Strings Attached" 
How should one handle a gift of a large 
sum of money designated by the donor for 
the purchase of books on a very specific, 
narrow topic? If the subject requested is 
esoteric, or if the librarian senses that such 
material is not suitable for the synagogue 
collection, the donor should be persuaded 
to reconsider. It is a good idea to maintain a 
file of alternate suggestions to present at 
the opportune moment. 
A synagogue library is essentially a 
circulating library for laymen, and while it 
serves students, it is not generally 
designed for scholarly research. Articu-
lating this view, and documenting it as part 
of library policy, will prevent the problem of 
inappropriate gifts in almost all cases. 
Acknowledgment of Gifts 
In some cases, the librarian may be asked 
to send a letter to the book donor which 
includes a statement of dollar value for tax 
purposes. Policy should dictate that this 
request be ref used. The Ii brari an 's 
evaluation has no legal standing. It is 
suggested that the acknowledgment letter 
merely state that the library received "X 
number of used books in good condition," 
or "X number of new books"-together 
with the usual expressions of gratitude. 
Book Plates 
The question arises as to whether or not it 
is necessary to plate each gift book. I'm 
convinced that unless there is an explicit 
request to plate a gift book, not every book 
acquired through donations requires 
plating. If a member of the congregation 
can be made to understand that money 
s/he donates to the Book Fund is pooled 
with other gifts and used to purchase 
books for the library, the concept of one 
check for one book can be discouraged. 
On the other hand, if a donor offers to con-
tribute a sum of money large enough to 
cover the cost of a specific, expensive 
reference work, then by all means, a 
special book plate should feature the 
donor's name. In all questions of plating, 
common sense and good public relations 
dictate policy. 
Weeding Donated Materials 
Weeding, a necessary task in all synagogue 
libraries, presents a problem when the 
books to be weeded turn out to be gifts. An 
example serves to clarify this point. Some 
years ago, a member family donated 
numerous works by Sholom Aleichem to a -
synagogue library; the volumes in Yiddish 
Judaica Librarianship Vol. 1 No. 2 Spring 1984 113

Judaica Librarianship is expressive of the relationship between large academic Judaica libraries and 
smaller school, synagogue, and community center libraries. It offers articles specific to each and relevant 
to both. As Judaica librarians become more sophisticated because of the discipline demanded by the 
new technology; better educated as more universities and schools of continuing education offer courses 
in Judaica librarianship and Jewish studies; and more in touch with each other through organizational 
contacts, networking, and workshops, the dichotomy between the academic library and the small library 
narrows .... Like the Children of Israel, Judaica libraries, despite their differences, are One. We have similar 
. goals: to encourage Jewish learning and to transmit its values and practices regardless of the size of our 
collections and staff and whether or not we are organized to support a faculty or teach in the library 
through reader guidance, with book discussions and other media. 
Too often, the lib.rarian of the smaller Judaica library-professional or volunteer-feels apart from the 
larger library world. Nothing could be further from the truth. The article on the history of Jewish librdries in 
the Encyclopedia Judaica (V.11, pp. 190 ff.) describes how a modest Talmud Torah in Verona of 1650 
matured into the present vast library of the Roman Jewish community, and how other major Judaica 
libraries developed similarly or even from a single individual's collection. No library, despite its size, should 
be taken casually or be regarded as unimportant. This statement carries implications for the library's 
selection policy and for its organization and administration. A too broad, simplified classification scheme 
which does not lend itself to expansion as the library grows often has to be. completely redone. Each 
library must regard itself with the utmost respect, dignity and seriousness of purpose even when fiction 
composes a large part of its collection; for that fiction mirrors the Jewish experience. The thirst for learning 
and romance with the written word is characteristic of Jews. Regardless of size, the Judaica library is part 
of that tradition. • 
I am continually surprised and edified to learn of the variety of Judaica libraries and to see how they tailor 
their collections and programs to fit their agenda and clientele. Most of us are familiar with the types of 
libraries mentioned above, but possibly not with the types of libraries I have recently come to know as 
Library Consultant for the Task Force on Art and Literature in Jewish Life of the Commission on Synagogue 
Relations of the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies of New York. Jewish Old Age and Nursing Homes have 
Judaica collections which feature large print and talking books. The demand for Yiddish materials in 
these formats has not yet been met, however, much to the consternation of inhabitants of such Homes. 
Some Federation hospitals also have Judaica collections in their patients' and staff libraries; and 
residences for exceptional Jewish children hope to develop Judaica libraries suitable for the 
handicapped and emotionally disturbed Jewish child. Jewish social workers need a library of resources 
about the Jewish perspective on social problems so that their counseling of clients is consonant with 
Jewish ethics and values. Jewish summer residential camps for children have Judaica libraries and 
informal book discussio[) programs. 
Some innovative changes are occurring among the diverse Judaica libraries. The widely separated 
day and synagogue supplementary Hebrew schools of Suffolk County, New York, will soon benefitfroma 
Judaica bookmobile service complete with traveling librarian, who will also be in charge of a large 
central Judaica library for the county under the initiative of the Suffolk Association of Jewish Schools. The 
libraries of the Central Queens and the 92nd Street YM/YWHA's and the Jewish Community Center of 
Bensonhurst have been asked to add popular Judaica in the Hebrew and Russian languages for Jews for 
whom those are first languages. Two of the most interesting libraries I have visited are the Jewish Youth 
Library in Boro Park and the library of Yad Vashem in Jerusalem. One has been established to serve the 
young children and parents of a traditional community; the other to maintain the memory of a sacrificed 
one. I will share my visits to these and other libraries with you in this and succeeding issues.

The first book I checked out of the library 
was an American novel translated into 
Polish shortly before the war, Przeminelo z 
Wiatrem, known as Gone with the Wind. It 
was the story of a strong young woman, set 
in a country to which I had never been. 
However, as I read the book, I understood 
the poignancy of this story of the des-
truction of the South and its implications 
for my own situation. Through the eyes of 
Scarlett O'Hara, I learned about the 
decimation of a society and its lifestyle, the 
death of family and friends, and the will to 
persevere and rebuild. I realized that the 
world from which I had come was 
irrevocably destroyed, that I had to survive, 
and that as I had promised my father, I had 
to tell the story to future generations. 
When I sat down to write In the Mouth of 
the Wolf, I had two objectives in mind. The 
first and obvious one was to retell the story 
of the Holocaust. There are many history 
books that outline the facts and events of 
World War II more chronologically than 
this book. However, numbers and dates 
carry with them a certain sterility. pnly 
through personal accounts like this do 
people understand why war is so awful and 
genocide so abhorrent. Only through 
personal accounts can the legacy of the 
past be kindled in the consciousness of the 
present generation. 
Secondly, I wrote this book with the aim of 
instilling in my young readers a sense of 
honor and strength. The modern American 
Jewish adolescent is faced. with. very 
serious problems of human self-respect, of 
honor, of sexual responsibility and of 
religious commitment. I hope that in telling 
my wartime experiences as a young girl, I 
may be able to guide my young readers in 
their moments of difficulty in otherwise 
peaceful lives. I hope that my moments of 
courage will provide an example for them 
and· help them live steadfastly as Jewish 
men and women. I also hope that the non-
Jewish reader finds my story equally valid, 
and will arrive at the conclusion that the 
lesson of the Holocaust has not only 
Jewish but universal implications and 
consequences. 
Although one should never be so naive as 
to expect literature to prevent personal 
problems, war or genocide, one should 
never underestimate the power of literature 
to provide strength and guidance. Who, 
after all, would have thought that Margaret 
Mitchell's story about a Southern heroine 
would have helped a young Jewish girl 
from Poland to survive the Nazi genocide. 
And who would have thought that this 
young girl from Poland would come to 
Atlanta as a mature woman to accept this 
award .from you tonight. I thank you one 
and all.

This is the second issue devoted specifi-
cally to Judaica. The first (dated April 18,. 
1983) met with such an enthusiastic re-
sponse that the editors plan to make this an 
annual event. 
The main thrust of the pamphlet is anti-
quarian material, although it does include 
some material on new and recent books. It 
is divided into three parts: 1) articles; 2) 
books for sale; 3) books wanted. The 
books for sale include a large number of 
books of Jewish interest, while there are 
only a few in the "want lists." A useful 
feature of this pamphlet is the inclusion of 
the names and addresses of antiquarian 
dealers that handle Judaica. The issue 
affords the librarian an opportunity to be-
come aware of antiquarian dealers special-
izing in Judaica, as well as of general 
dealers who have ventured into this field. 
Further, it provides libraries with a vehicle 
for publishing their own want ads-for a 
price. 
. The articles, which are interesting and 
illuminating, cover a variety of topics: a 
survey of recent scholarly Judaica; the 
history and. development of Hebrew 
calligraphy and typography; the Judaica 
auction market; parchment used by the 
Jewish Scribe; and book reviews (new and 
recent books). 
This is an important tool for university and 
research libraries of Judaica.

known in Israel; and now, Steimatzky has 
come to New York, more specifically, to 
Greenwich Village. The store sells Hebrew 
and English books published in Israel on all 
topics. It issues a catalog of Hebrew titles, 
as well as a catalog of English materials. 
The books listed in Hebrew are, for the 
most part, general in nature, although there 
is a minority of titles of Jewish· interest. 
There is a great deal of literature in Hebrew 
for children and young adults. The English 
material is more of Judaic interest. The 
store advertises that it has over .1,500 titles 
in stock. Anything in stock is available 
immediately; otherwise there is a two-week 
wait for books, which are shipped from 
Israel via air mail.

with an emphasis on the Holocaust. The 
programs have been selected from the 
works of NBC, PBS, BBC, and other 
independent producers. Prices are given 
for both purchase and rental. 
Pamphlets 
Leader's Digest: A periodic summary of 
materials and news from the American 
Jewish Committee (AJC, Institute of 
Human Relations, 165 East 56 Street, 
New York, NY 10022). 
The American Jewish Committee pub-
lishes material of current social and 
political Jewish interest. It sends out 
notices of publications as they become 
available. Librarians generally prefer an-
notated lists with entries that are at least 
reminiscent of standard bibliographic form. 
The American Jewish Committee h~ now 
provided just that. Each entry in this 
butletin, which presents readers with a 
"quick overview of materials produced and 
distributed by the American Jewish 
Committee in recent weeks," includes 
author, title and pagination, but does not, 
unfortunately, include date. 
This is a convenient tool for ordering 
pamphlet material, albeit from only one 
organization. We look forward to the day 
when all pamphlets of Jewish interest will 
be listed in one source.

Published in 1984, this is the first edition of 
the Directory. Future editions are planned. 
As indicated in the introduction, this "was 
conceived and compiled to fulfill the need 
for a current, reliable and comprehensive 
worldwide listing of Jewish periodicals." 
The last time such coverage was attempted 
was in 1972 when the most recent edition 
of Joseph Fraenkel's, The Jewish Press of 
the World was published by the World 
Jewish Congress. The Directory clearly 
serves a purpose; however, its coverage is 
far from comprehensive, with only 900 
listings, although there are at least a few 
thousand known Jewish periodicals. While 
all publications from outside of Israel 
included in the Directory are of Jewish 
interest, many Israeli publications listed 
have little or no Judaic content. 
The entries are arranged alphabetically by 
country; the frequency of items included 
ranges from dailies to annuals: news-
papers, bulletins, and newsletters are 
covered, along with periodicals and 
journals. A separate section at the end of 
the volume is devoted to "Irregular Publi-
cations." All titles are given in Latin 
characters. Each entry provides various 
descriptive information, and indicates the 
language of the publication and its subject 
or principal readership. An alphabetical 
index of titles is provided. A subject index 
would have been very useful. • 
We hail this latest attempt at providing 
Jewish libraries with a needed reference 
and acquisitions tool. We look forward to 
seeing a considerably expanded second

This is an annotated list of more than 2000 
basic books on Jewish history and thought 
in various languages, with the predominant 
number in English and Hebrew. The scope 
of the bibliography is significantly more 
comprehensive than the subtitle indicates. 
The work covers titles from the fields of 
Jewish philosophy, sociology, economics, 
and culture-in addition to history and 
religion. 
The purpose of this bibliography is to 
furnish the librarian with a list of basic 
books that are of major importance for the 
study of Jewish history and thought. While 
extensive in coverage, the bibliography is 
nonetheless selective. It includes sources, 
research, anthologies, reference works 
and journals, and covers each subject 
internationally from ancient to modern 
times. Although the most up-to-date 
research is emphasized, older, standard 
works are also included. Popular works 
and hig-hly specialized studies are 
excluded. 
Aside from its value as a reference source, 
this bibliography will serve as a valuable 
retrospective acquisition tool.

Albert Einstein Archives 
Probably the major event of the year for 
Israeli libraries was the acquisition -
after years of complex litigation and 
negotiations - of the Albert Einstein 
Archives by the Jewish National and 
University Library (JNUL) in Jerusalem. 
The Archives contain 43,000 documents, 
including much of the scientist's 
correspondence and more than thirty 
unpublished scientific manuscripts. 
Since Einstein's death in 1955 the papers 
had been housed at the Institute for 
Advanced Study in Princeton, New 
Jersey, where the scientist spent his last 
years; they were flown to Jerusalem 
toward the end of 1982. According to 
Professor Reuven Varon, former director 
of the Jewish National and University 
Library and director of the Hebrew 
University Centre for Research in the 
History and Philosophy of Science, 
Technology and Medicine, the Centre 
will undertake the preparation of a 
detailed catalog of the contents of the 
archive which, he said, he hoped will be 
published by Princeton University Press, 
which is editing and publishing the 
Einstein papers as a joint effort with 
Hebrew University. The University is 
planning a full program involving the 
papers, considered by many to be one of 
the greatest existing scientific, cultural 
and historical collections. The archives 
will be housed in the Jewish National and 
University Library, located at the 
University's Givat Ram campus in 
Jerusalem. 
The documents which arrived in 
Jerusalem include scientific and non-
scientific material, with the non-scientific 
items outnumbering the scientific by a 
margin of about three-to-two. The great 
majority of the material, including most of 
the correspondence, has never been 
published.

Hebrew University 
The University will continue the process Scholem Collection 
of acquiring additional materials for the -
archives - either copies or originals _ In 1982 the Library acquired and began 
and will also continue with plans for a processing tile unique and outstanding 
major Einstein exhibition in April 1985, collection of the late Professor Gershom 
marking the 30th anniversary of Scholem, one of the founders of the 
Einstein's death. Jewish National and University Library. 
Periodicals Microfilming Project 
At the end of 1982 the systematic 
microfilming of Hebrew and Jewish 
periodicals published outside of Israel 
was begun by JNUL. The project is being 
conducted concurrently with the project 
already underway to microfilm Israeli 
periodicals in imminent danger of 
disintegration. At the same time an 
attempt is being made to locate and 
microfilm any issues missing in the 
Ii brary's sets of periodicals, from 
collections in other libraries. 
Laor Map Collection 
Another JNUL collection which has 
undergone an impressive expansion in 
the past year is the Map Collection. With 
the transferral of the collection to larger· 
quarters, the collection of antique maps 
of Mr. E. Laor was finally made available 
to visitors to the National Library. Until 
the relocation of the Map Collection, Mr. 
Laor's large collection of antique maps of 
Israel and the Middle East had been 
housed in the donor's apartment because 
of lack of space in the Library. 
Exhibitions and Publications 
To mark the 30th anniversary of the 
execution of Yiddish writers in the Soviet 
Union, the JNUL and the Center for 
Research on Eastern European Jewry of 
the Yiddish Department of Hebrew 
University recently issued facsimiles of 
thirteen of their books in a limited edition 
of 500 copies. To mark the 40th 
anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto 
Uprising, an exhibition and catalog on 
the subject was organized and presented 
in the Library's Berman Hall under the 
direction of the JNUL's Reference 
Department. 
His library of 26,000 volumes includes a 
comprehensive collection on Jewish 
mysticism, Kabbalah, Sabbateantsm and 
Hasidism, as well as a fine collection of 
books on mysticism in general, magic, 
history of religions and Hebrew 
bibliography. The Scholem Library will 
be housed in a separate reading room as 
a special collection and will serve the 
planned Scholem Centre for Research in 
Jewish Mysticism and Kabbalah. 
Gifts 
Two gifts of international significance 
recently bestowed on th.e nation's 
repository are worth mentioning: a rare 
Stravinsky manuscript valued at about 
$40,000 and containing the original 34-
page score of his work Abraham and 
Isaac, donated by Jerusalem Mayor 
Teddy Kollek; and a huge triptych in 
stained glass by artist Mordecai Ardon, 
representing an interpretation of a 
passage from Isaiah, to be installed in the 
upper foyer of the Library. The windows, 
which will cost more than $500,000, are 
being financed by the sale of a limited, 
signed and numbered edition of 150scale 
replicas, each of which will sell for $6000. 
Reading Symposium 
As a special feature of the April 1983 
Eleventh Annual Jerusalem International 
Book Fair, the Hebrew University 
Graduate School of Library and Archive 
Studies organized and hosted an 
international symposium on "The 
Encouragement of Reading Among 
Disadvantaged Populations." The 
conference was both well-attended and 
well-received, and it is hoped that it will 
. become a semi-annual event and 
permanent feature of the semi-annual 
Jerusalem International Book Fair.
