Retrieval of Judaica from Electronic Media: An Overview
In the past few years, we have witnessed the rise of a multiplicity of electronic data bases in online and CD-ROM formats. While most of these are broad and general in their coverage, some include resources of great value to the Judaica researcher. Indeed, for certain Judaica serial titles, many of these databases now provide the only indexing available. Judaica librarians need to familiarize themselves with what is available and learn how to access it. Jewish Children's Literature in France
Due to the tombstone desecration incidents in the cemetery in Carpentras, head line stories in early 1990 furnished quantities of information on the long his tory of the Jews in France. Starting from the Roman period, we are told all the usual ups and downs-mostly the downs, with the forced baptisms, expulsions, slaugh ters, accusations, and disasters that Jewish history everywhere features. The ups are the moments when Jewish learn ing and literary efforts flourished, as in the 11th century in Troyes, where Rashi was France's—and perhaps Judaism's greatest commentator on the Bible and Talmud. The newspapers mentioned the emancipation of 1791; the Dreyfus trial in 1894; Leon Blum, the first Jewish prime minister of France; the battleground of the Second World War; and the perpetual battle and tenacity of being Jewish
Epistle from Israel
As a result of interest created by the Ffrst International Conference of Judaica and Israeli Librarians held in Jerusalem in June 1990 (see Judaica Librarianship vol. 6 no. 1–2), an Israeli Judaica librarians' group was founded in 1991. For administrative purposes, it was decided to operate the group as a subdivision of the Israel Society of Special Libraries and Information Centers (ISLIC), though all programming is prepared independently by the group's members
