A Technology-Enriched Active Learning Space for a New Gateway Education Programme in Hong Kong: A Platform for Nurturing Student Innovations
Get PDFA Gateway Education Programme is established in Hong Kong that aims to broaden students’ interdisciplinary knowledge and nurture student innovations under the Discovery-enriched Curriculum. To support the initiative, a novel idea was proposed for the creation of a Gateway Education Laboratory (GE Lab) with a highly configurable layout equipped with a 3D printer, a cloud-based eLearning tool and user-friendly scientific instruments. Course leaders report that the GE Lab provides a very good physical environment that enhances student attitudes and supports various instructive styles and interactive learning tasks that traditional classrooms fail to provide. Students’ creative achievements have been recognised internationally
Working side by side: Creating alternative breaks as catalysts for global learning, student leadership, and social change
Get PDFAlternative Breaks on college campuses have moved from a “feel good” week of service to a movement for social change. Working Side by Side is a comprehensive look at these short-term and immersive service experiences led by students during weekends or academic breaks. The authors provide an effective introduction to those unfamiliar with co-curricular service experiences, explaining the history, structure, and critical components of Alternative Breaks. Fennell's Vision: the 'Wind Ensemble' Concept
No full textABSTRACTThis paper will explore the influence and legacy of Frederick Fennell and his vision of the wind ensemble concept. It seeks to illuminate the contributions of this landmark figure in the history of ensembles of wind instruments in regards to instrumentation, repertoire, nomenclature, and popularity.The paper will begin with an exploration of the history of the wind band from early Middle Ages itinerant groups to the professional bands directed by the likes of Patrick Gilmore and John Philip Sousa, and finally to the conception and creation of the Eastman Wind Ensemble. It will include Fennell’s own thoughts and writings on the wind ensemble and reference the compositions commissioned and the recordings produced by Fennell and the Eastman Wind Ensemble. Lastly, it will conclude with a summation of Fennell’s influence and legacy through his ideas, writings, recordings, conducting, and advocacy of the wind ensemble concept
Queer Eye for Appreciative Advisors
No full textStorytelling is an integral part of appreciative advising, and employing a queer eye in the storytelling process can help advisors avoid the trap of reducing students to a single story, stereotype, or identity. A queer eye encourages advisors to challenge their assumptions and think critically about stories – both the ones students tell advisors about themselves and the ones advisors tell themselves about students. This paper introduces the concept of a queer eye and explores the ways in which advisors can strengthen the appreciative advising relationship by approaching students and their stories through this unique lens.
