Promoting Community Engagement: A Campus-Wide Approach to Applied Learning
Get PDFApplied learning pedagogy has gained momentum in recent decades. Simultaneously, a call for universities to respond to the needs of local and global communities has prompted a focus on community engagement in higher education. The purpose of this paper is to describe the development of the Applied Learning and Teaching Community (ALTC), an initiative designed to further integrate applied learning—including community engagement— into the identity, practice, and teaching ethos of the university. With a focus on sustainability, the ALTC has evolved into an expansive model that involves faculty, staff, students, and other supporters across campus. A discussion of the ALTC’s relevance in the context of current trends in higher education is included
A comparison of the experiences and vocational benefits of service-learning and community service volunteering in a community-based exercise program
No full textService-learning (SL) is a form of pedagogy which integrates community service into class curriculums. Literature has highlighted the benefits of service-learning within a variety of student outcomes, including personal development, academic learning, interpersonal outcomes and outcomes related to the university experience. However, there is debate as to whether community service may provide a better foundation for these outcomes. Therefore, it is pertinent to compare outcomes of service-learning and community service volunteering in order to better understand and implement theory and implications for practice. This study compares the experiential and vocational outcomes of service-learners and community service volunteers (CS) involved in a community-based exercise program. Participants (SL; n = 22, CS; n =24) were alumni recruited from the XXXX database within the XXXX School of Kinesiology and Health Studies. Online surveys were used to collect data examining outcomes related to Self-Determination Theory constructs for assessment of service experience and career transitions. Analyses of covariance revealed statistically significant higher scores for SL regarding outcomes of autonomy perceptions in their service role and perceived influence of relatedness in guiding career pursuits. SL provides experiential and vocational benefits that may exceed community service volunteering, specifically in regard to fostering career relatedness and autonomy supportive program structures.

Life in a Fishbowl: Student perception data for long-term center sustainability
Get PDFCommunication center directors, staff and tutors must continually analyze student perception of the center space in order to promote long-term campus viability. Thus, this manuscript addresses perceptions of communication center liberal arts students at a small, southern private university. Through surveys, students were asked how they utilize the communication center space, what projects they worked on as communication center participants, and improvement for the future. The measure for this study included a survey with questions that addressed Fishbowl use, technology or furniture use in the Fishbowl, the feedback process on student projects, and Fishbowl improvements. Situated learning theory is presented as a theoretical framework for communication center success and collaborative learning.

Investigating the Impact of Interactive Whiteboards in Higher Education. A Case Study.
Get PDFInteractive whiteboards (IWBs) are a billion-dollar industry. Their prominent position in classrooms, frequently the single display to share digital information, draws attention to their influence on teaching and learning processes. This research presents a case-study of a Canadian college with over five years of IWB experience. Findings show that despite implementing best-practices, most instructors underutilize IWB capabilities. This research concludes that the IWB contribution to student learning has been limited with potentially detrimental impacts on student perception and comprehension given the smaller size of IWBs and their lower mounting position when compared to traditional projection screens
