Ethics, technology, and standard practice in communication centers: Proposing a continuing education credit program based on lessons learned from law, business, and healthcare
Communication centers on university campuses can benefit from an examination of the service and relationship-centered elements of the legal profession, business, and healthcare. Meaningful parallels are presented in three areas: standard practice and education, ethics, and technology. Based on its findings, this article argues centers consider adopting a continuing education credit program. A framework for the program is provided, presenting four categories related to intended outcomes: communication skills, professional development, interpersonal training, and ethics. The program is an intervention concerned with quality and may have the potential to improve a center’s training methods, the tutoring process, and the organization as a whole.

Employing the Appreciative Education Framework to Innovatively Deliver the Virtual Appreciative Advising Institute
The onset of the COVID-19 global pandemic drastically altered the way organizations conducted operations; the Office of Appreciative Advising (OAE) at Florida Atlantic University was no exception. This essay highlights the methods employed and solutions co-created by the OAE leadership and intern team to surmount the obstacles COVID-19 presented as we planned and executed the 2020 Appreciative Advising Institutes (AAIs). Capitalizing on key tenets of both the Appreciative Advising framework and the Appreciative Mindset, we provide a step-by-step recap of crucial decisions made during the shift from the planned in-person Institutes to fully virtual Institutes for the first time. The purpose of this paper is to provide an example of how the Appreciative Advising framework can help guide teams as they innovatively navigate unexpected challenges.
Creating Zones of Peace for Undocumented Residents during the COVID-19 Pandemic: Civil Society Efforts in North Carolina
This paper examines the role of civil society in creating spaces of belonging (“zones of peace”) and support for undocumented residents in North Carolina, a relatively new destination for these migrant communities. Nonprofit organizations and faith-based institutions have created programs, practices, and places that create a sense of belonging and foster community peacebuilding. However, this is conceptualized and put into practice in unique and varied ways. In addition to offering traditional sanctuary spaces, they have also formed creative solutions to address systemic racism in policing and detention practices. The efforts described here work together to provide a strong local network of protection and resources for vulnerable populations, a network that was sustained and continued to function even during the COVID-19 pandemic. These cases illustrate how innovation exists in the fight against injustices as each group produces spaces and forms of advocacy that can act synergistically with one another for the protection of all people, regardless of their status. They help us to understand peacebuilding and agency, and how spaces, place, and agency can be re-theorized. We argue also for the central place of storytelling, i.e., a strategic peacebuilding tool to bridge the gap between newcomers and existing communities to create a sense of inclusion and belonging, construct shared meaning, educate, and share knowledge, and exercise agency, all of which are critical in transforming spaces and places in establishing zones and cultures of peace
Collaborative lecture theatres: Does redesign of teaching space impact on pedagogy?
This paper focuses on a UK higher education institution (HEI which redesigned three lecture theatres as ‘Collaborative Lecture Theatres’ (CLTs). Using Radcliffe’s framework for designing and evaluating learning spaces and using his three related components; pedagogy, space and technology it will explore how the redesigned rooms (space) and the introduction of technology has influenced pedagogy. The study utilises surveys and interviews with staff in different contexts within this institution, using the redesigned rooms. The data show that changing the design of the room and the technology within it does not necessarily lead to a change in pedagogy for all
Implementing Appreciative Education in On-Campus Student Employment
Every administrator, faculty and staff member at a higher education institution must recognize the important part they play in impacting a student’s ability to flourish on campus and beyond. Implementing appreciative education (AE) in areas across an institution, such as on-campus student employment programs, is one way to guarantee that lasting effect can be harnessed and benefited by all involved. Through the use of two professional narrative lenses, this article reveals multiple applications of AE that supervisors could use to be better equipped to build a flourishing workplace for their student employees
Utilizing Speech Language Pathology Praxis to Equip Communications Centers in Supporting Students with Communications Disorders: A Research Study in Progress
College students have many concerns when first arriving at school. Who will be my roommate? How will I make friends? Are my classes going to be harder than they were in high school? For persons who stutter, these questions are often intensified. Persons who stutter may also have to take on a new role of self-advocacy now that they are independent from their family or friends they had in high school. For these students, social situations, presentations, and classroom participation can seem increasingly challenging, especially without the needed support in place. How can communications centers play a role in supporting these students and help them achieve success at their university?
